Well well : my copy has the red B / heart on the "Father Christmas" label, and the white B / heart on "The Inbetweenies" one ; it never occurred to me that Bradley's would actually swap them over, and print some the other way round with A and B suffix also swapped over. It seems rather a pointless thing to do with it being regarded as a double-A-side anyway.

Thanks Ray, that's a shame as I remember The Imbetweenies performance being clever as well as controversial. It certainly would struggle to get shown anywhere today. Do you know if it actually banned as such or was there just a lot of fuss about it? I have that single, having bought it immediately after seeing The Inbetweenies on TOTP : though technically a double-A-side, the single clearly shows "Father Christmas Do Not Touch Me" as the A-side and "The Inbetweenies" as the B-side, Bradley's (the label) using different colours to mark out A from B. I don't remember any controversy over "The Inbetweenies" : that was certainly the side featured on TOTP and the Top 20 show each Sunday night through to the end of its chart run ; it was actually "Father Christmas" that was 'banned' by the BBC because of its 'suggestive' lyrics. I never heard it played on the radio (then or now).

The password is 'freeradio' - if you'd read the home page!!!! Which home page? The one that says "If you need the password, please Contact Me and explain what your interest is in offshore radio." ?? I took that as a bit of a threat, rather than as a clue to the password being "freeradio" ; I'm always mis-interpreting complicated things like computers ...

It let me download them but then asked for a password to play them!

I would guess the VT original has been processed through some kind of converter, like Handbrake, before uploading to YouTube, and whoever did it wasn't very careful about preserving the "50 fields per second" of the original and has thus got a "25 frames per second" output, making it look like film ; or, of course, the original may be a colour tele-recording - I know nothing about that.

I'm also grateful : got my Dad's Christmas present a few months early - Van der Valk box set, half price.

But even more so the recent David Attenborough docos. have fluctuating sound levels - so at some times he's too loud and at others he's too soft. These varying sound levels are very unprofessional. Just make sure that it's not your TV making that happen : we were always noticing that sometimes the narration on documentaries (and other programmes) got very quiet, and at other times seemed overly loud, and I tracked it down to a setting on my TV (an LG) called 'Clear Speech' which I had switched on, by default. Whatever this processing is, which is supposed to make spoken bits louder than other sounds, just couldn't cope with variable background sound levels, ironically from annoying music etc. I also found it made a right mess of things like the opening credits to Match of the Day, with the sound level going up and down throughout. I switched 'Clear Speech' off, and all was well, though I did have to crank the overall volume up a notch.

So, if you're calling the author of 'A la recherche du temps perdu' a looney, I shall have to ask you to step outside!

I bought the DVD box set of Lucky Feller for my Dad a couple of years ago, and it had all episodes on it, including the pilot which featured a different cast (apart from Jason). They showed A Sharp Intake of Breath recently on UK Gold, or one of its off-shoots, and I assumed it was all of them.

I do remember the promo film for this being shown on TOTP back then : it was every bit as awful as the song itself.

Apart from those of us in various parts of the country with BRW (British Relay) cable : we had it in our part of Ipswich so had BBC2 right from the aborted first night. Did BRW standards convert BBC2 to 405 lines for ease of use? No, they had dual-standard sets capable of handling both 405 and 625 lines, though you had to flick a switch to tell the set which to use : most customers had older sets which had been converted by BRW, not always with exclusively positive results ... (I've told this story before, but what the heck) In the early days of BBC2, our household rarely watched anything on the channel, but a big favourite of my Dad's was The Virginian ; one evening we were sitting there watching it when the TV caught fire! Next day BRW came out and removed the charred set, leaving us a near-identical one in exchange ; all was well, and a week later we were sitting waiting for The Virginian to start, when my Mum said "I hope it doesn't catch fire this week" ; "That's not going to happen is it?" says Dad (I was 5 years old at this time) ; a few minutes later, (and you'll be ahead of me here ...), the set duly burst into flames! That was the last time we had one of the older, converted, sets in the house : BRW replaced it with an obviously more modern dual-standard set that served us from then right through to when Dad stumped up the extra money to switch to colour, also from BRW, in 1972.

I think BBC2 may have only been available in London and the South-East at the time Apart from those of us in various parts of the country with BRW (British Relay) cable : we had it in our part of Ipswich so had BBC2 right from the aborted first night.

That's a shame : my son was born the day before and it would have been interesting to re-visit what was on the show that week.

Yes, the poster (S-M-S) is the one who got in contact with me when he found my audio-only 'missing' TOTP performances on Youtube, and kindly informed me that he had the wiped video of some of them (Sound your funky horn / Pinball / You can have it all/ and others) : he/she won't reveal where they have come from, unfortunately, but nice to know they are out there somewhere!

My copy of the show, recorded on VHS when BBC2 showed it some time in the 90s, has a running time of 44 m 52s, so it's surprising that it is still billed at 45m with GG cut out.
