Anyone out there know why the 21st March 1985 edition isn't being shown on BBC4 ? It's hosted by Mike read & Steve Wright and all the acts seem to be Operation Yewtree friendly.

Was it another where the tape didn't record everything or was damaged?
There seemed to be a few in 1981-2 like that, normally live episodes.

That's a shame : my son was born the day before and it would have been interesting to re-visit what was on the show that week.

The original 1" Quad tape was wiped many years ago for some reason - the BBC only hold an off air recording of this edition - if you re-watch "The Story of 1985" there are a couple of clips from this edition (one is Billy Bragg) and the quality is definitely not from a master tape - ex BBC VHS off air copy - even so, it's still a pretty good recording, so not entirely sure why the BBC are skipping this one (they showed an off air 31.03.77 a while back)...
The only thing I can think of, is perhaps there is some problem with another part of the off air recording - as I say, it really doesn't look that bad and the 'average Joe' wouldn't probably notice any difference!!!

Can't believe I only just thought of this, what with all the episodes that the BBC have been unable to show in recent years, but a few years ago I borrowed a whole load of VHS tapes from a friend of mine who used to religiously tape TOTP every week from 1984 onward, and I copied some of them to DVD. I just checked to see if I had the 21st March edition, but sadly that wasn't on one of the tapes in question. I do however have quite a few hosted by Mike Smith, including the 30 August 1984 edition where Morrissey memorably tore off his shirt to reveal the words 'marry me' written on his chest during 'William It Was Really Nothing' and at the end Mike Smith did the same thing to reveal 'We Love The Smiths' written on his chest. If there wasn't the block on his episodes being shown (which I believe dates back to the DJs giving consent for their episodes to be repeated on UK Gold), then this one would have had to be severely edited by BBC4 to remove sequences of YouKnowWho trying to break the high speed train record. I also found a couple of 1984 episodes with DLT, but presumably these would have been shown by UK Gold and are therefore not quite so rare among collectors. Sadly there is now no chance of getting the rest of the tapes off my friend, as she had to throw out her VHS collection after it all got irreversibly mould-damaged in storage. Oh well.

It's a real shame that any edition of TOTP co-hosted by Mike Smith won't get an airing, especially as 2 May 1985 had the live version of "No Rest" by New Model Army on it, and it was excellent. One of the classic live TOTP performances in fact.
Anyone know if a promo video for the song was used in the previous week's edition when the single was a breaker?
