BBC4 is repeating the 1973 Christmas edition of TOTP tomorrow night (24 Dec); not surprisingly, Gary Glitter's performance of "I'm The Leader Of The Gang (I Am!)" been edited out. Details of the show here.

My copy of the show, recorded on VHS when BBC2 showed it some time in the 90s, has a running time of 44 m 52s, so it's surprising that it is still billed at 45m with GG cut out.

Perhaps something else has been edited in to replace it? Very unlikely but you never know.

Might be something like a tribute to David Cassidy.

The Sweet performing Blockbuster was also cut because Steve Priest wore a black armband with a Swastika on it. Therefore there is definately no chance of seeing their 1st February 1973 (black and White) performance where lead singer Brian Connolly wore a big Nazi German cross around his neck. I think the politically correct snowflakes at the BBC are going over the top now, German TV have no problem broadcasting these episodes.

Does this mean that The World at War can't be repeated now as there are too many swastikas on display? Idiots.

This was shown a few years back on German channel ‘Einsfestival’ ...the end of Slades ‘merry Christmas everybody’ was longer, and the camera rig was in view....I think it was faded out early in the original transmission.

A colour TOTP performance of "Blockbuster" was included in "Glam Rock At The BBC", shown last September. Brian Connolly was wearing the large Iron Cross around his neck in that one.

I haven't got round to watching the BBC4 tx of this yet, but I did notice during the opening link with Noel and Tony that there seemed to be some tape damage - looks like a small quad scratch from the original tape - but - on two separate copies I have (one is the BBC2 repeat showing in the early 90's) this tape damage isn't visible, so wonder if the BBC4 tx was from their only copy now residing as a master?
Update:- Just discovered that this Christmas 73 edition is put together from the original studio recordings as the original tx version no longer exists - I understand different takes were obviously still on the studio rushes, so guess that perhaps might answer the question, although the opening link looks exactly the same as my other copies??

can anyone tell me why the end of the show with Slade singing Merry Xmas looked like a rehearsal, it was very roughly filmed and seemed to spend more time on filming the audience than the band

The whole show confused me, definitely some editing went on there but pretty sure the original Slade performance (if indeed that one wasnt shown,) will be on youtube.

I think on the original transmission it would have faded out after the last caption appeared. I had a copy of the 90s repeat and that faded soon after the custard pie in the face, whereas this version went to the end of the track where presumably they had stopped directing the cameras as this part of the show was never meant to be televised.

Does anyone have a link to the uncensored Xmas 73 Blockbuster so that we can all enjoy Steve Priests "Camp Nazi" in all its ridiculous glory again? Had a quick gleg on YouTube to no avail.
