I think Steven"s point is that it can be done seamlessly, so even if not quite done perfectly, it might be noticeable, but it isn't going to be a massive distraction.

Why? If done right, no one would have even noticed once the bits were spliced back into the prints. That would require every edit to be sharp and clean to begin with, then the original edits to be undone and everything put back together with no scratches or overuse of glue, etc. I did a little bit of film editing in college, to me that seems a pretty tall order. Perhaps I underestimate the skill of whoever would have been tasked with this, but with it being a return I can't imagine that it fell to their best editor. I've edited back films that were cut for extra commercial time (they often used to splice the removed footage to the end of the reel) -- for the most part there would be no frames missing - just a clean splice. So splicing it back together was just a matter of finding the spot where the footage went, and then splicing it back in. If done right - a viewer would probably not even notice.

The splices would have to be clear tape, because you'd lose a frame with a glue splice. Tape splices aren't noticable if they're made well, and gaps, bubbles, and tape edges in frame are avoided.

I've just finished watching the animated Tenth Planet episode 4 and it is the best animation of a missing episode so far in my opinion.Planet 55 have done an excellent job and they would definitely be my choice for future animations. The attention to detail and the atmosphere which oozes from the screen is so wonderful, and totally in keeping with the live action of the preceeding episodes. This animation is certainly equal to,if not better than The Ice Warriors. Are Planet 55 also doing the Moonbase animations? If so,I can't wait!Even their work on Reign of Terror makes that serial totally memorable for me.

This! The Tenth Planet 4 looked great, very good animation much better than Reign of Terror which i found distracting.

Oh,and I've also just finished watching the documentary 'Frozen Out' which is also one of the best making-of Docs in the entire range.Anneke Wills is such a great speaker on her era of Dr.Who,clear and un-ashamed to talk about what was such a tense and uncertain time in Dr.Who's history.A real treat. However,I was wondering, because the animation was made after the production notes were written ( which was certainly the case for the ROT animations ),and so no production notes are available for the animated episodes, will the aborted notes ever be made available on DVD as a PDF?I love the production notes and feel they are the cherry on the cake for animated episodes,as they were available for the animations of Invasion.Even though they wouldn't obviously be synced with the animation,it would be great to just read them as they were written!

Yes, I found also found the animation for the Tenth Planet to be much better than what I saw in The Reign of Terror.

Just finished reading Matthew Sweet's review of the Tenth Planet DVD and I'm really disappointed that he barely mentions the animated episode, and when he does he gets it wrong, calling it CGI!Instead of reviewing the programme he starts rambling on about high-brow theoretical works on cybernetics by various authors, which is all well and good but what I really want him to talk about is the new realism brought in by the Tenth Planet by the pages of girly mags stuck on the walls of the men's sleeping quarters! And what in the name of Allah is he talking about in that final paragraph about someone trying to keep warm on the set of POTD?He completely loses me there! As in the mis-judged scene in his recent documentary about abuse by JNT,someone needs to do some serious editing of Matthew Sweet!Don't get me wrong, the review is interesting and I would love to see it given more space in some factual book on Dr.Who,but not when reviewing a simple DVD.DWM is a strange beast at the moment due to the 50th celebrations, euphoric and celebratory about the current programme whilst at the same time giving us a 2-part article on Anthony Coburn which is unsettling. But then again,it's been that kind of year for the programme as we've seen with the news of recovered stories.I really hope the magazine settles down once the regeneration occurs.

Glad you mentioned Matthew Sweet & JNT, Jaspal. I've only just watched "You Me and Doctor Who" and nearly fell off the settee when he raised those JNT allegations. That had nothing to do with celebrating the 50th Anniversary. First he bigged up JNT's reputation to an extent I'd never anticipated then came the muck raking. My personal view is that the show went rapidly downhill with him at the helm but attacking deceased people's personal reputations is very Channel 4. Back on message again, hope to spend rest of today watching Web and await MBW news next weekend.

Looking forward to picking this one up in the new year Jaspal, will go down a treat with Moonbase. Might even go crazy and watch Invasion on the same day - animated 60s Cyber mayhem!! Anneke's good value - I love hearing her talk so fondly about the past, her recreation of Polly for Big Finish is great fun and like Louise Jameson, it's like they never left. Glad I'm not the only one who likes those info texts, too. They add plenty, often telling me stuff I'd never heard of, and are always much appreciated. Onya, R Team! You look at the dough the Trek franchise has, and even here Who whips their pants in terms of the value-added releases, on the traditional shoestring budget. As it was on telly, so it remains on DVD!

In 1993, anticipating the return of the missing Episode 4, the BBC produced a special introduction for an intended VHS release of The Tenth Planet. The intro was hosted by Michael Craze and was recorded at the Longleat exhibition. It introduced the story as if it were complete and Craze invited viewers to "settle back for The Tenth Planet.” www.youtube.com/watch?v=udioDMIksCUDoes anyone know if this was ever used or included on an official BBC release? Or, did it just walk out the door? The original URL no longer works, but here's a new one. www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXoznyh8_D8
