Tenth Planet is not the best in the looks department.
I'm sure someone can advise where the prints are from, or at least where we think they're from. Whether they were in the library in 1978 or later returned from overseas or not has no baring on the quality. The quality varies from episode to episode. An episode from a negative is going to be better than a print, but even then it means nothing as a telerecoring could just be substandard to start with. It is by no means a linear process.

IIRC the sound quality of some of the 10th Planet episodes is bad, at least one has been redubbed with an off-air audio recording.

Episof THe Tenth Planet was horrible in the pre VHS release days but they have fixed the audio on that episode from an off air source. Now the pictuers on teh DVD were as good as can be expected. If I remember correctly they did not have film negatives of that story just the film prints.
Correct me if I am wrong

In 1993, anticipating the return of the missing Episode 4, the BBC produced a special introduction for an intended VHS release of The Tenth Planet. The intro was hosted by Michael Craze and was recorded at the Longleat exhibition. It introduced the story as if it were complete and Craze invited viewers to "settle back for The Tenth Planet.” www.youtube.com/watch?v=udioDMIksCUDoes anyone know if this was ever used or included on an official BBC release? Or, did it just walk out the door?

Why was the return anticipated?

Why was the return anticipated? Whilst I have no knowledge of the above recordings by Craze. There was a hoax in 1992 when a blank tape was given to the BBC which was supposed to be a copy of TP pt4.

The 1993 "return" of 10th Planet Episode 4 that led the BBC to make THIS CLIP was due to a hoax. I still wonder if that clip was ever used in a VHS or DVD release as an extra? A quote from from p 424 of the new edition of Wiped: "One notable hoaxer from the 1980s and early 1990s went under the pseudonym Roger Barrett. He was in contact with various people and groups over the years, from DWB, to the organisers of the TellyCon conventions, to individuals such as Mark Gatiss in his pre- The League of Gentleman days. Barrett was always claiming to have a copy of 'The Tenth Planet' Episode Four, but was seemingly reluctant to agree on what he wanted in exchange for it, and ever ready with an implausible excuse whenever required to produce any proof of his claims. He even tried to sell a supposed film print of the episode to a large number of people over the years, and in the early 1990s, this drew the attention of the BBC. At this point, Barrett claimed not to have the print any longer. Instead, he handed over to the BBC a Shibaden videotape, on which he said the episode was recorded. However, the tape turned out to be completely blank. Oh, what a hoot!"

I saw part two of `The Tenth Planet' at the NFT as part of the 20th anniversary celebrations and remember that the sound was AWFUL. This was of course long before the Graeme Strong audio recordings turned up. IIRC the soundtrack on the newly recovered `Masterplan' episode they screened was equally as bad.

As a little side-bit of information, Roger Keith Barrett was the real name of Pink Floyd's "Syd" Barrett, and of course, the band and Doctor Who have many tenuous links.

Yes, an April fool's joke. Much hilarity followed. Rather embarrassingly, when the Colourised Tenth Planet April Fools joke was published in DWM 88, I got so excited I wrote a letter to the ABC asking if they could screen it. I totally missed that it was an April Fools joke. My excuse - I was 9. Ahh yes, like the DWB April Fool's about the discovery that "The Daemons" was originally 6 parts and episodes 5 & 6 were condensed like "Planet of Giants", and the original VT for both episodes had been found. Good times...

Good times... Have there been any other April Fools' jokes? There was one in DWM a couple of years ago about regeneration "test footage" featuring Hartnell and Troughton having been found, filmed during location shooting for The Smugglers. They included photos, which I believe were taken from an ITV series in which they both appeared? Anyway, some people seemed to get quite oddly upset about this one!
