Just googled to see if there is a central list of acts appearing on TOTP during late 1971/1972, as I have 10 or so listings I noted down of episodes from then (with my ratings for each song)... if they arent online (I expect they are) I'll post them if anyone's interested... cheers! john

thanks Andy that's a fab site! Yes my listings match these but arent as detailed, and a bit sporadic. The sad thing is TOTP made such a huge impression on me in those days that I recall most of the episodes from late 71 to 74, including getting annoyed by the MOR acts bunged on there without a bonafide hit rather than a current American hit, say. I remember most of the performances and can say how much i liked them by the position they held in my own charts the following week:) Cheers, I will spend some time studying nostalgiacally the old show lisitngs and links to those that do survive... john

my song order is different for some of them though, so I'm not sure which one is right, though mine lists the number ones in the right places I may have written them down as I liked them after watching....

Hi John. If you jotted the track listings down at the time then they will more than likely be correct. A lot of the running orders on Popscene are based on guesswork. I'd love to see your listings, cheers.

The camera scripts for TOTP at BBC Written Archives tell you the exact running orders (with D.J. links transcribed as well). I researched a lot of these some years ago but don't have many after about 1971 as the formatting changed at that point and listings were then all mixed in with the other programmes of any given day and it became like trying to find a needle in a haystack!

The camera scripts for TOTP at BBC Written Archives tell you the exact running orders (with D.J. links transcribed as well). You've hit upon an interesting point there. When Keith Badman did his feature on the first edition in Record Collector many years ago, I remember thinking it was odd he was able to quote Jimmy Savile's introduction to the show, explaining what it was about. Whilst he obviously had a transcript to hand, the big question is, were the DJ links scripted and they're what's on the camera scripts or were the links transcribed during the live show? Given that things could and did go wrong on live transmission necessitating ad-libbing I just wonder if the transcripts are actually what was broadcast. Plus there were interview moments as well which surely couldn't had been scripted! In the case of Alan Freeman, David Jacobs and Pete Murray I can well believe they would had memorised a script and went from that on the broadcasts, but Jimmy Savile? I can't imagine him learning from or using scripts and writers writing in every "As it 'appens", "now then now then now then" and his infamous "Uhuhuhuhuhuhuhu" outbursts! Any ideas on this?

Actually, it is possible that Savile's verbal ticks were scripted. Frankie Howerd used to rehearse every single "Ooh, missus", etc, AIUI.

Yes... that's true. Howerd even insisting interviews be scripted down to the last "Ooh" and "Never mind..." I'm just not sure when it comes to Jimmy Savile given his odd nature. Certainly by the early 80's his intros and countdowns were lame as Hell and if scripted, an absolute embarrassment!

Hi Neil, thanks for that, OK I'll dig them out and just for fun include any notes I made at the time (such as for Lindisfarne's Lady Eleanore "same film as for Meet Me On The Corner" which makes it sound like one of those dire BBC walking down the street videos boo hiss)

I'm not sure how scripted they were either, my all-time favourite TOTP intro was by John Peel and I can't believe they would allow it in a pre-checked written version... "And up next is the band who put the tree back into Big Country with their latest hit...(In A Big Country or some other Big Country hit)" Best. TOTP. Line . Ever.

He he he... for me the best host of TOTP. Many of his intros were sidesplittingly brilliant. Him and David Jensen did make a good double act and Peel's dour demeanour and comical dry witty intros were always a treat.

Slightly off-topic, but only a tad. My favourite line was by John Peel, as well. Something like 'Aretha Franklin could make anything sound good, and she just has....'referring to 'I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me) By George Michael and Aretha Franklin.

I'd guess they were generally scripted as there was always a full camera run-through of each edition (listed on the script) and being able to predict D.J. dialogue would obviously be useful as camera cues at certain points. Obviously live interviews would be different; I shall have to take a look at an edition where a guest appears (I can't remember offhand). If the interview is transcribed, I would guess this must have been taken from the transmission (if the guest was unavailable for rehearsal / run-through of the questions).

Not forgetting, "and here's Russ Abbott with a cover of Joy Division's 'Atmosphere.'"
