According to the Popscene website the whole episode survives Laurence but I have my doubts. I know Middle of the Road & Tony Christie exists from this show because they were used on ZDF's Disco (with mute intro from Jimmy Savile) date 15.01.1972 . But Labi Siffre & the rest It's listed as on orphaned clip at the link below from Thursday 23.12.1971 however there was no TOTP broadcast on that date. homepage.ntlworld.com/e.watkins/musictv/interest2.htmYes, the 2/12/71 edition DOES exist. It's one of two editions recovered in b/w by Kal from 1500 recordings (the other is 18/11/71). The 18/11/71 show was screened at June's Kal event - I was there myself. Whether or not the exact tx date is correct is another matter though! Full details of ALL such recoveries are listed in detail in the "Raiders TV Recoveries / Discoveries: 2007 on" thread in the general section, for everyone's reference. Apparently the Tony Christie and Middle Of The Road clips survive on an insert reel as well as in the actual Disco editions. So the insert reel would be the preferred version as it would not have any cutaways to the Disco studio.

I remember the moment I first heard Cher's Gypsies Tramps & Thieves on TOTP, my mum said is that Cher from Sonny & Cher? I said I thought it was a group because it sounded like a man singing. I would have thought the lyrics would indicate otherwise, but hey I was 13!

MORNING - VAL DOONICAN (13) y TOKOLOSHE MAN - JOHN KONGOS (4) y SOFTLY WHISPERING I LOVE YOU - CONGREGATION (4) y John Kongos, too, that record still sounds menacing and his original of He's Gonna Step On You Again is brilliant, way better than the more famous chirpy Happy Mondays version. I loved the Congregation song, it's that wailing guitar that punches through the choir that sells it and the singer is great too. dance club track) Finally I always had a soft spot for Val, his kiddie 60's stuff and Elusive Butterfly were fun Tokoloshe Man is a great song, and almost forgotten 40 years on. I have the 1st K-Tel "20 Dynamic Hits" album from 1972, which features The Congregation but the track only has the choir and a toned-down guitar : no lead vocals! A very poor version. And, finally, Val Dinnergong ... one of my favourites as a child ( I was born in 59), and I do like his last Top 20 hit "Morning", but in my collection it is filed under 'Comedy' because of the ridiculous chorus : "Suddenly I look into your sleepy eyes ; you breathe my name and it just seems to dangle there". I still remember my old mum laughing hysterically at that!

the photo is correct - Jimmy is dressed as his 'brother' Percy in the Tony Christie link, but did not appear like this for the entire programme. Regards Mark

Thanks Dale, Yes, those Ktel/arcade albums were often a big disappointment, chopping bits out, speeding them up, putting the wrong versions on (I'm still trying to get the original Danyel Gerard version of Butterfly that Alan Freeman played!)... Youre right, that lyric always made me laugh too:)

...and since I mentioned her, here's sandie shaw in the next 2 totp lists
Moon River - Greyhound Day After Day - Badfinger Baby Im Want you - Bread Brand New Key - Melanie Telegram Sam - T.Rex Persuaders - John Barry All I Ever need is you - Sonny & Cher Stay With Me - faces Shaft - Isaac Hayes Where did they go - Sandie Shaw I'd like to teach - New Seekers Where did our love go - Donnie Elbert
seems a lot of songs in that one, just to say I loved Sonny & Cher back when they were hippies & TV stars, Melanie was fun, Bread were sweet and Badfinger had 3 great singles and a tragically early end for 2 of them..
Day that I die - Don McLean (yes I know its American Pie NOW!) Son of my father - Chicory Tip Mother of mine - Neil Reed Family Affair - Sly & The Family Stone Storm in a tea-cup - Fortunes Loving ain't easy - Having You seen her - Chi Hites Telegram Sam - T.Rex If you really love me - Stevie Wonder I'd like to teach - New seekers All you ever need is you - Sonny & Cher
fairly obviously I'd not come across some of these at the time! The Pagliaro track is a forgotten goodie (Loving You Ain't Easy), I was mad on the Fortunes hit (they also had a brilliant american hit in 71 Here Comes That rainy Day Feeling Again, and 60's goodies). Chicory Tip were exciting, that synth sounded so new and fresh!

Regards Mark Thanks Mark, I didn't doubt you for a minute! It's about time they showed the Labi Siffre track I think, even if it's in black & white. We've heard the Madness version of "It Must be Love" but the original takes some beating, a great performance of the original exists from "Hits a Gogo".
