It's a shame INFAX is no longer online so we can look for ourselves. Wasn't Stealers Wheel's "Stuck In The Middle..." another TOTP appearance that was rumoured to have been shown? I'm pretty definite I saw that one around 1983. Whether it was on POP QUIZ, I don't know. But it was in colour. The camera pans across and there were, as I recall a group of three with acoustic guitars. gerry Rafferty in the middle. This was DEFINITELY not my memory from the 70s. Important one too as all the existing material I've seen only includes Joe Egan, no Rafferty in sight. I'm prompted to recall some kind of live film clip with rafferty on OGWT though. I did look through INFAX when avaialble on this one and there was no match for the item, From what I remember John 'Pop Quiz' showed a clip/outro of 'Star' and not 'Stuck in the middle with you'. Pretty sure of that, though you can never say YES for definite as the years are tumbling by and the brain is beginning to melt!! The promo of 'Stuck.....' is on a pretty decent DVD that's introduced by Paul Morley from 2003. It may have flown under the radar here I don't know? Here's a link to it on Amazon - www.amazon.co.uk/Stuck-Middle-DVD-Paul-Morley/dp/B00009P9PDAll original promos (The Stealers Wheel one is mental!! No Rafferty and Joe Egan is STONED as always!!) Track listing is : 1. Status Quo – Rockin’ All Over the World 2. Sparks – This Town Ain’t Big Enough For the Both of Us 3. The Boomtown Rats – Rat Trap 4. Buggles – Video Killed the Radio Star 5. The Boomtown Rats – I Don’t Like Mondays 6. 10cc – Dreadlock Holiday 7. Squeeze – Cool for Cats 8. 10cc – The Things We Do For Love 9. Squeeze – Up the Junction 10. Thin Lizzy – Sarah 11. Free – All Right Now 12. Stealers Wheel – Stuck in the Middle With You 13. Status Quo – Whatever You Want 14. Siouxsie and the Banshees – Hong Kong Garden 15. Level 42 – Something About YouThere's also a great clip of Joe and Gerry only doing 'Star' on Beat Club/Musik Laden in 1973. T.

Thanks for that! Interesting as 'Star' was not known to exist either. The version performed on the late '73 OGWT appeared to be a live segment; at least backed up by existing portions listed on 'INFAX'.
The promo I've seen for 'Stuck' is the one where Joe Egan is centre stage, set in a cafe. Egan of course was one of the main writers but Rafferty seemed to be put as the 'front man' in most TV performances I recall.
And apologies to all I came to this thread late so all my replies were in one glut.
Sorry Paul if some of the issues discussed regarding Pans people were covered previously by Moderator Laurence. Just an observation.
Think we all agree the interest in returns of old pop material remains a common reality and to wish a peaceful Xmas to all here!

From memory, I can recall a Pop Quiz-used VT studio clip of Stuck In The Middle with Rafferty, on a stool, miming the vocal (i've never seen this used anywhere since). John's memories of this one seem similar to my own so i'm sure it was shown. Egan seems to mime in the film promo of the song that i've seen though (the one with the group miming in a room with big archways and intercuts of clowns and people eating spaghetti etc.), which doesn't feature Rafferty at all! Did he not like appearing or something? Star was 1974 and I think Stealers Wheel was actually down to just Rafferty / Egan by then, which explains why it's just the two of them on Musik Laden.

Is there an online resource I can use to help identify a bunch of 1980s TOTP shows I've received ?

The only time I've seen the song played with Rafferty actually taking the lead vocal. He always was sidelined for some reason. Dave

Can anyone confirm the episode that BREAD appeared on - circa 1970 - promoting "Make It With You" ? I've spoken with band member Robb Royer who says they DID appear on the show in person, but I can't find any record of it ...

There doesn't seem to be any record of them appearing in person, i'm afraid. A promo of the song was shown on one occasion (20/8/70) and Pan's People danced to it on another (3/9/70).

Maybe Robb was getting confused with one of the many other shows they appeared on ... Have you seen the promo clip from 20/8/70 ? Was it an actual video of the band performing ? I'm writing the very first biography on the group and need as much info as I can find ! Thanks ...

The TOTP database lists a David Gates solo studio performance of "If" from 8/7/71. Don't know if any of the other band members appeared with him though.

I'm writing the very first biography on the group and need as much info as I can find ! Thanks ... I've checked the paperwork and 20/8/70 is one of a few editions where full details are not available. Part of the PasB is missing on the BBC film copy (looking like it was transferred clumsily), meaning that details of the film used are not present! So it could have either been a record company promo or (my guess) a TOTP-made film which didn't feature the group. That's just my guess though.

I just checked to make sure whether `If` was a group or solo single.
It was definitely a Bread, group single.
Knowing the dynamics of the band personell, I think it's unlikely that the rest of the members would have approved of David Gates promoting a band single as a solo act.
That's not to say it didn't happen though...
I was quite surprised to see that `If` didn't actually chart in the UK for Bread... In the USA it was a Top 5 record.
