Hi. I just joined this forum today and it looks great!!!!!
I wanted to inquire as to what 1971 episodes of TOTP are known to have aired with, if possible, the names of the performers on these shows. I'm particularly interested in June-December of 1971. Also, how many of these had Ed Stewart as the presenter? Thanks.
Michael

Between June and December, Ed Stewart presented the following editions: 5/8, 2/9, 30/9, 28/10, 25/11 and 30/12/71. For more detailed information on acts, you probably need to get the following: www.kaleidoscopepublishing.co.uk/books-variety.htmlKal also published a specific book on TOTP listing the contents of every single edition from 1964 onwards. This may be currently out of print but I expect an updated version is planned eventually. Welcome to Missing Episodes, Michael.

Slade ll were on the bill with us in Belgium this weekend so I took the opportunity to ask Dave Hill for any memories he had. He said that after they'd performed 'Get Down And Get With It' on Top Of The Pops the director arranged to film the band larking around at a Power Station to show the next time they were on. (I thought he said Battersea but it seems I was mistaken. I guess sometimes you hear what you want to hear, and we were in the hotel bar . That might give a little insight into how production of the show in 1971 was occasionally done ahead of schedule. A little gamble by the BBC. If the record had gone down the chart, they wouldn't have used the film. Dave also said the he would always try and wow the rest of band with his outfits on the show. He'd never let the other guys see his outfits then, for maximum impact, he would change in the dressing room lavatory and make a big entrance purely for the rest of the band when they were called to the sound stage. He also mentioned there was an occasion Noddy Holder decided he was going to wear a Kaftan robe on the show ( it sounded like kaftan to me). Anyway, Chas Chandler took one look and told him to change as "everyone would think they'd gone all hippy". By the way, there were 14,000 at the Sportspalais, Antwerp Saturday night and, I have to say, Slade ll absolutely tore the roof off the venue.

The film was shot at a dissued power plant in essex. It was thought to have been shot around Brums famous spaggetti junction until I was asked to view it H would get changed into his outfits in the TOTP dressing room toilet and Nod, Jim, Don & Chas would shout "Cum on David reveal" www.youtube.com/watch?v=kG9Ol8V041IThe film was discovered by a UK mate in Australia years ago with different captions and audio having been dubbed on by the ozzies. The film was also featured in Nod's ITV Raiders of the lost archive programme: www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSTWUlXOVqgThere's also a fontana promo for wild winds are blowing that was filmed around london's euston station. Nod said to me at BBC Manchester this year that they have tons of hours of footage from all over the world but hardly anybody within the band or management know who holds the rights to it all I helped on several clips he showed me. Keep On Rockin

Was this shown on Top of the Pops at the time, Paul? I might be getting confused with the personal appearance in the studio Bowie made for the song though. The song is a rarity as I have not seen a clip of it anywhere so far.

My mate Steve is a Bowie expert - he has never seen it, vaguely aware it may exist, but that's all.

no they def just showed the vid for that on totp 18th may 1973. as it was a flop single that was all. in fact bowie only made one studio appearance between 'starman' in 72 till 'heroes' in 77 for the infamous lost 'jean genie' in jan 73. they used vids or dancers for the dozens of other featured singles

In those days if your record got to number 3 in the charts that was an achievment not a flop.

I was probably getting mixed up there. What was the promo for Drive In Saturday? Was it a Top of the Pops film or a video clip? A favourite of Bowie songs for me and is overlooked. Would be good to see it. Dave

mustve been a bad few weeks, the single made little compared to some of the others even though it was in the charts about 2 months, my mate knows, he used to work for rca sales in the 70s. maybe cos it wasnt a hit in europe or the states.
