I'm sorry to say that no clip of See Emily Play was ever featured on Pop Quiz. The 'Look of the Week' Astronomy Domine was, and I remember how excited I was to see it, because the screening of any Syd-era material was an extremely rare occurence in those days.

I've a video from the mid 80's that shows Starman and Oh You Pretty Things both used in that end segment on Pop Quiz. Starman is 82, but it cuts out on Pretty Things before the year comes up. Tim appears absolutely certain Jean Genie 4/1/73 was shown too, so thats a healthy line of enquiry. I clearly remember nearly going mad at missing the 'JG' clip with my VHS recorder (I taped the clips mentioned above) & nearly spilling my tea! It must of been shown about 5-6pm or so, possibly a saturday or sunday? I'm sure there were other TOTP's clips, like the PF clip mentioned by Lawrence that were, at the time, very unusual. Someone mentioned about Mike Read using his tape archive for the show, can someone verify this? I emailed Mr.Read via his website years ago but received no reply. Finding the complete series would be excellent. Not sure if it was 1981 or 82? I'm leaning towards 1982 though, so maybe series 2?

Are you absolutely sure about that, Peter? I was quite sure that what I was seeing wasn't Astronomy Domine or Set The Controls (the only two other early Floyd clips that resemble the TOTP apperance to any degree).
I'd guess, Tim, that if Read had some material stolen, he might be quite reticent about talking about what he may / may not have from then on or replying to e-mails on the subject (which I can understand).

I have a VHS of Jean Genie from Pop Quiz; I used to record all of them and then edit down the bits I liked. It is expressly not from TOTP. It is a later version, maybe 1975 or 1976, Bowie is in his soul-train era, big baggy pants, slicked back hair, funky backing band and a re-arranged song. The clip is only about 45 seconds.

I know this isn't what everyone is talking about but I think I can remember a Bowie clip on Top of the Pops of Jean Genie which seemed to be from a live concert. Did a clip like this get shown? If so i'm guessing it was from the Hammersmith Ziggy show.

Sadly Laurence, I am sure. I used to sit through each programme recording the bits I was interested in - and I was huge Syd Barrett fan by 1981. If See Emily Play was aired I would have it.

I'm sure you did, Peter. I'm just pretty sure of what I saw, that's all. Curiouser and curiouser...

It's a shame INFAX is no longer online so we can look for ourselves.
Wasn't Stealers Wheel's "Stuck In The Middle..." another TOTP appearance that was rumoured to have been shown?

I'm a bit curious about this one. From my memory, a lot of items were most definitely shown on PQ that were one-offs. I used to watch most of the time for this reason but not every week unfortunately. It was just before I had home video otherwise I'd have recorded them.
I hope to be going to Missing Believed Wiped this year for the first time just to cast a glance on that Floyd clip (and the other pop material on display). I've seen several recent reports stating that as much restoration as possible has been undertaken so it should be interesting to see what the quality is now like.

This may be the case but I can assure you the JG TOTP's clip was shown as I also saw the original broadcast in 1973 & it was the same performance not a later one. No I'm not getting confused.

If it was from Hammersmith then it'd be a very unsual showing as Jeff Beck plays guitar and its been cut (by Becks request apparently) from the official concert release. One must remember that the 4/1/73 performance was part live, and also that Mick Rocks promo which was also shown on TOTPs does contain a hell of a lot of concert footage. Looking here www.bowiewonderworld.com/features/topofthepops.htm you can see there was no Jean Genie on TOTPs after 11/1/73 (which rules out Hammersmith 3/7/73). I also wonder why this last one was only disc and not a repeat of his studio performance from the week before? Perhaps its just wrong....or they'd lost it already?

Are you certain you taped every Pop Quiz Martin, because Tim's adamant he saw that TOTPs version? Its a tough one Tim, you would imagine if it still existed in 81/82 it'd have made its way not only into the TV and press campaigns for the Lets Dance/Serious Moonlight tour in 83 (The Tube prog for instance), but onto a lot of peoples video tapes too. The gap between it going completely AWOL and/or making its way onto many 80's home video tapes is such a small one there its frightening. Fingers crossed it turns up out of the blue. A truncated Pop Quiz clip or not.

A long shot - Was there any strikes around this time that not all regions were shown the transmission? I spent many a year in the first place convincing people that JG was indeed played on TOTP's & in a in a partly 'Live' form! I only hope the complete series is in some broadcasting companies archive? It sure had some great TOTP's video clips on it.
