Picking up the gauntlet...
OK Lance - these kinds of personalities have been discussed here before but in answer to your question people like this individual gain personal gratification from starting a frenzy among certain groups of people.
This person knows that there are a number of people out there who express an interest in old, rare films/other materials so advertises the availability of said item. Then he sits back to enjoy the ensuing frenzy...
Of course he is telling people about the alleged existence of other, wealthier buyers - this promotes more interest in the story. But ask yourself: is it reasonable to believe someone who puports to have sold "something interesting" for an undisclosed sum to an unidentified person? I'm not saying that such a thing COULDN'T happen - but it does call for a little thought and reflection on known facts, doesn't it? Idle speculation only serves to muddy the waters and remove us even further from the "truth" of the matter (whatever that is).
Regarding his reluctance to promulgate the titles of these items I would surmise that the reason he didn't inform you of the contents of the films he "had" for sale is:
A. designed to keep everyone guessing and speculating on what possible treasures "may" be out there, and;
B. because he does not possess them or they don't exist.
Sorry if this seems like I am peeing on your battery but there it is.

Probably right. This just seems to be the year for hoaxers, I wish they would give it a break for a while.

I assume that you mean the one on the iOffer auction site (roughly similar to eBay) where a seller call eurywalker indicated that he had Episode 1 of The Wheel in Space, which several weeks later he suddenly admitted was Episode 6 after all. The seller claimed to have sold prints from Fury From The Deep, The Myth Makers, and The Massacre. However, it was all a hoax and he did not posess any of the episodes he claimed to have. I e-mailed him several times, and eventually he gave me the list of the episodes he supposedly had. I wish it was'nt a hoax, I would love to watch an episode of Fury or Myth Makers, probably will not happen though. So, the wait goes on.
Lance.
