Well having said I wasn't going to get it, my elder brother came to stay last week and bought the dvd. We watched it Friday night and I was pleasantly surprised! The imagination that has gone into the animation is amazing. It engages the viewer and *almost" makes you forget the longeurs of each task.
I don't know if they were intentional, but there seemed to be several echoes of children's culture from days gone by. Steven had a look of Dan Dare about him (the chin) which, given his original raison d'etre when he joined the series, was appropriate. The Hearts family was extraordinary and had a hint of Oliver Postgate/Peter Firmin animation. Sergeant Rudd had a whiff of Michael Bentine's Potty Time. My only quibble was that all the dolls were actual dolls, so you lost the more visible echo that they had once been human.
