Notice how it's always highly sought after episodes that these people have had the luxury of getting a private screening for? Aren't they lucky!

Notice also that there only tend to be rumours about high profile MEs….. Usually because those ones are the only kind that hold more value. If you hold the missing episode for a popular story then the price just skyrockets due to the popularity

Back around 91/92 in the early days of t’internet when I was at university I got to know a guy whose initials where CW and spent a few months exchanging emails about all sorts of DW randomness. (remember this was the early 90s when so much was unknown, you could chat about MEs for ages before someone piped up with a “Well we know x and y for a fact so thats impossible”. Back then tales of sons of Canadian station owners who had them all on laserdisc, or shibaden tapes with TP4 all seemed possible. Oh for more innocent naive times lol) Anyway I digress. This guy just struck me as completely down the line, perfectly normal in every way. But one day out of the blue he told me that Power 2 would be back within weeks. He told me he’d seen it - it was missing most of the opening credits and all of the end credits (and this is 20-odd years before Galaxy 4 turned up sans end credits. Hmm), which he said was deliberate according to the owner as he “was paranoid about the bbc copyright angle”. I'd lay odds that he was talking about the revised version of the tele-snap reconstruction of Episode 2 of Power that Richard Landen had done that year. He'd introduced some movement into the images by slight zooms and pans and copies of the recon started to make their way into fandom pretty soon afterwards.

Talking of good ol' Dr Who Bulletin back then, I seem to remember a claim that Power 2 and Evil 3 existed in private hands - we can only hope that this is rooted in fact. I can't find DWB ever mentioning that, but Rumours certainly did. I seem to recall editor Adrian Middleton saying that he just trawled around and filled the fanzine full of any old unsubtantiated gossip and nonsense. I think at one time or another, Rumours published whispers about pretty much every missing episode!

Has there ever been a rumour about episodes of The Space Pirates existing? 😉

Honestly, it's just a thought. I have no idea if he has/hasn't (obviously!) I feel like you're thinking more along the lines of Ian Levine, who arguably we owe a fair few episodes to, did withhold a few episodes which he said he kept to use as leverage for other missing episodes. You've hit the nail on the head - and I'm sorry for mixing up the two. I'm not so clued up about DW but did watch some documentaries on the missing eps recently - and that's where I got confused. However, I do have a couple of questions. 1 - is it possible copies are being held back for the reason Ian Levine stated/did in the past - to potentially extract other eps? 2 - what on earth is the Shibaden tape hoax? I'm conjuring up images of native Americans dancing round the 'sacred' ME Who tapes performing some sort of ritual? Am I close?

Has there ever been a rumour about episodes of The Space Pirates existing? 😉 If there hasn’t there is now 😂 Go back to just after the return of Enemy and Web and there was the (in)famous omnirumour which contended that everything, or virtually everything, that was missing was whizzing in our direction. Discussions sometimes got heated as there were a few who desperately wanted it to be true and refused to accept the, reasoned, objections. There were many problems - MEs coming by ship from landlocked countries being an obvious one! Then there were bunches of MEs that had never been together. It was obvious to some of us that it was a non-starter and years later nothing has come from it. I’m not sure exactly where it started but I reckoned it was being used as click bait.

I believe this was the very start of the omnirumour. Then it escalated eventually to 90. Funnily enough the 16 episodes 'still missing' were Dalek Masterplan and all the episodes animated up to that point (Invasion, Reign of Terror, Ice Warriors).

That’s before Enemy/Web were announced but it could well be.

Apart from the fact that some of us were told that the two episodes from RoT had been recovered alongside two more from DMP (looking back at previous messages these were Episodes 4 and 8) and the episode recovery was around 40!

I think it was believed that TP4 was coming back in time for the VHS release. Ah the widely reported Shibaden tape hoax which even took JNT in. Not the work of Darren Gregory though.................. Can someone please explain the history behind the "hoax" regarding The Tenth Planet 4 return? I have a copy of the tape which includes the short introduction by the late Michael Craze saying the episode was recently returned. The end credits reflect a 1997 date and state "Reconstruction by Michael Palmer". I've never heard the story and have never been sure exactly what I'm seeing on that tape.
