Since this is "missing episode" forum, where we are trying to do our part to help find missing episodes, labeling leads as hoaxes or attacking people before investigation immediately discourages people from sharing. Sadly, even those who found things were bashed.
My personal thoughts is that the reason that hoaxers do what they do is for the attention. It could be positive attention (where people start believing the hoax) or it could be negative attention (hoax bashing) Sadly many fall into the two extremes of reaction.
A better way to handle it is if the concern is forwarded to group or Paul (preferably in private). Those with knowledge can comment. And then if its a lead followup and go by what they determine.
After investigation, we can then label it: hoax (if found to be deliberate), mislead person (if person was mislead), unsubstatiated (where nothing can be found out) dead end (if followed up on and concludes with nothing) success (if something found)
Usually when I find a rumor in another forum, if very obvious, Ill address it myself at the source to keep it from spreading. If I need further clarification from Paul, Ill PM him and ask for a response in private which prevents the rumor from spreading and yet addressing the concern at the original site.
But as Shakespere said, "The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, But in ourselves"
If we want to help recover episodes, we'll have to have our own mind under control.

'... labeling leads as hoaxes or attacking people before investigation immediately discourages people from sharing'
Labelling leads as hoaxes is not what we're talking about - that would be a bad idea. We're talking about labelling 'claim to have found or know the whereabouts of an episode' as hoaxes. As regards 'even those who found things were bashed': I'm new(ish) to the board, but I gather no episode finds have ever been publicised first through this messageboard (but am happy to be proved wrong).

Well, I would be very suspicious of any rumours associated with Blackpool, Blackburn, Liverpool, Warrington and St. Helens, in fact any area of the North West. There have been a great many claims which have turned out to be hoaxes emanating from all of these areas, the majority of which you don't know about, following a similar pattern to previous hoaxes. Since 2005, the number has reached double figures. They're all perpetrated by the same person and vary from simple rumourmongering to borderline fraud. Paul It's too bad something can't be done about that guy. Sometimes criminal prosecution has a way of changing a person's attitude. I doubt it: assuming we're talking about who I'm thinking of, he's been consistently doing the same thing since May 1988: he's now in his late forties for crying out loud. I don't think any number of wake-up calls will get through.

I say have a laugh at the no life brigade Be polite and enjoy yourself. Perhaps if they lose their virginity or manage to make a friend they will stop, but until then, and I wouldn't hold your breath, they will carry on making weird claims. Why isn't there a FB style "like" button on this? Lose their virginity... Lol, I'm in stitches!!!!

'... labeling leads as hoaxes or attacking people before investigation immediately discourages people from sharing' Labelling leads as hoaxes is not what we're talking about - that would be a bad idea. We're talking about labelling 'claim to have found or know the whereabouts of an episode' as hoaxes. As regards 'even those who found things were bashed': I'm new(ish) to the board, but I gather no episode finds have ever been publicised first through this messageboard (but am happy to be proved wrong).Actually Ray from the board finds lot of stuff (although nothing yet Dr Who) Also I thought the show with the behind the scene footage from the Peter Cushing Dalek movie was found indirectly through this board. I thought I read when the UCLA Ian Hendry Avengers episodes were found and announced here that the person got some suspicion, but I could be remembering that one wrong. I remember when the person from down under thought he might have a lead, Jon Preddle went and personally visited. While there was nothing there, I think the conclusion was that everyone thought there was a chance yet it was a dead end. While the guy was transparent, he did get a lot of flack. The person who thought there might be some ice warriors in Germany was wrong, but I don't think anyone on the board was hoaxing and thought it might be worth investigating. Things such as the Polly story, whether a misunderstanding or hoax, I cant say. It didn't start here but it was quickly ended. Perhaps finding episodes is a slow meticulous job sorting through leads, hoaxes, miscommunications and the rest. Could it take a trained professional like Paul to find the truth? For myself, Im not going to over react. If something is an unbelievable rumor, ill point that out. Otherwise, I trust the experts. Other investigations I don't comment on until they're done being investigated. I know that statistically leads normally don't go anywhere, so they are delegated to others and don't interrupt my life. Rather than post leads in public, maybe they should be best shared privately to Paul Richard or Steve. Perhaps I could be naive and believe that there are still good people out there looking for us and that not all people with bad information are evil with deliberate misinformation. My thoughts are the best way to stop rumors is to quickly address them without emotion, realize that leads/rumors for dr who have a very small rate of success, and go onto the next topic. I have no problem things labelled "unverified" or something simliar but I wonder if using the word "hoax" for everything not yet proven is a little too strong.

(Most current rumour / supposition threads merged here). I agree. Definitely stop clogging up the front page of the forum. Would it be worth editing the title of the thread or even making it a sticky thread so that everyone's aware of this?

Please excuse my hardcore fail Just remember to start every post with that And furthermore: d24w6bsrhbeh9d.cloudfront.net/photo/4032958_700b.jpgThats you that is

Being proclaimed a virgin would hardly be a deterrent for a lady hoaxer.

I can definitely understand the Dalek suit not being a woman's ideal date outfit. While I'm laughing at the Dalek virgin, for all the young people out there, abstinence is a very admirable quality and there is nothing wrong with waiting until marriage. You don't get diseases and unexpected kids. In the right time, the right person will appreciate you. We can now go back to picking on hoaxers
