I wish I know how to respond when someone posts e.g. "I've got the DW story 'Battlefield' my dad recorded off the TV".
If it's a wind-up,I don't want to take the bait (mixed metaphor?),but the longer it goes unanswered, the more I worry it's just someone who's young/naive.

If he has Battlefield, you could show some sincerity. You could say "You have my condolences. I'm terribly sorry." ;D

I think battlefield is an example. A lot depends on the situation and how cooperative the person is. Usually questioning a person bears out the truth. And as you ask questions and get the person to open up, you may hear some really wacky stories.
I think someone said in another forum, most of the rumors are really whoppers. Very rarely are they tales like we just found a 16mm of episode 3 of the gunfighters.
Another comment I heard was the rumors are usually false, airlock/underwater menace were the exception to the rule.

Battlefield was made in 1989.I can honestly imagine a teenager finding a VHS off-air of this and considering it ancient. How do you even play a videotape? In a way it would be quite handy to have a set of FAQs about the material that is,and isn't being sought, with a hint that hoaxes happen and aren't helpful, but nor are they a big deal-just an irritation.

So has jackw28 has been debunked and banned? sad really. Jackw28 hasn't been banned, yet. His account status still says "activated." Give them a little more time. If this is legitimate, this kind of thing could take weeks or maybe even months.

Can I ask you not to repost things which have been deleted please, guys, it just makes more work for me deleting them a second time!
Please take it from me that jackw28 is not maliciously hoaxing us, which is why he hasn't been banned, but it is almost certain that there are no missing episodes.
Moving on...

(First post. Now it's a party.)
Well, that's a disappointment. I know I shouldn't get my hopes up about these rumors, but I can't help it. Alas...
Out of curiosity, Rob, how have you determined this? Not that I'm questioning you or anything, I'm just sort of intrigued by the process.

Max.. Welcome to the board. Without getting your hopes up, the odds of something massive like that materializing are almost nil. They now have a good idea how many prints of each were made and where they went and where they were destroyed. In another topic, Paul mentioned the dates that Australian film prints were returned to the BBC to be destroyed. So unless there is another unknown film print set, the odds of such a complete collection being in Australia on 16mm original is almost impossible. When you hear rumors or leads, remember that it is the rare exception when someone turns out to have an episode but the motions have to be gone through just in case. The most likely possibility is an odd episode appearing every 2-10 years.. we have a long wait Of course I would like it very much if we are all wrong and it materializes.

We are more likely to find episodes of DW and other missing shows in peoples' lofts/collections than on 16mm. Despite the fact that video recorders were rare in 1965 and beyond, they were much more common than a copy of DW film. I would not know how many people owned a video recorder during this period, and of those the percentage that recorded and then saved DW for keeps, but it is surely a much bigger number than the film prints of DW.

Are we? Haven't all of the finds so far been on 16mm (including those in peoples' lofts), whereas we haven't found any on home video recorders?
That sounds more contrary than it should have. I apologize if my tone might be miscommunicated. I'm just trying to clarify things. I'm new to this whole missing episode thing; though I've been a fan for years, I haven't seen too much purpose in getting involved in the hunt, being an 18-year-old fan in the US. The history of it has sparked my interest as of late, though.

The history of it has sparked my interest as of late, though. I guess from a purely statistical point of view, there would be more commercial videotape available than 16mm copies. Videotapes and the Sony video recorder were both prohibitively expensive to most people in the UK in 1965/66 so again it is very unlikely that something would exist, but I would think that there would be a greater chance of someone having kept a copy of something on their 60s tapes than having a 16mm film in their collection. Would be purely a rich man's preserve, but still a possibility however unlikely.

I've heard that the earliest known off air video recording of Dr Who is part 2 of The Space Pirates, a surviving episode.
Are there any known off airs of The War Games or early 3rd Doctor episodes?

I take back my previous comment, having been told by another source that this copy was wiped. Obviously not the case. Assuming there wasn't a second copy handed in!
