I'm still unsure about this - i'm still going to chat to him to see if i can get him to slip up or proof. To be honest regards of whether it is true or not, would any of you give away something for nothing to make others happy, I know I would just to show my contribution, this is a problem with film collectors if they paid a lot for something and get nothing for it. He thinks that the BBC should offer a reward. Lost episodes were returned by film collectors Gordon Hendry, Bruce Grenville, Francis Watson, and Terry Burnett. All seemed entirely delighted to make them available once they discovered that what they had were missing episodes. References are made to bitter, resentful people who are hoarding missing episodes and who are concerned about getting what they have coming to them, but we have yet to encounter such a person in reality.

roflol His favourite Doctor is Patrick Troughton and he would like missing prints returned and he will not part with his. Well if he's not gonna share The Web of Fear 2 then Mission to the Unknown is just gonna have to remain in my sock drawer.

I am still not convinced its real, but at the same point, we dont have enough evidence one way or another. If he comes up with some missing off screen photos that are not known to exist then there is a chance he is telling the truth. Terry Burnett may not have gotten monetarily compensated however, he got something much more valuable. the satisfaction of making a difference in the world by making many people happy. Also becoming a celebrity (if one desires that) Returning it could also give publicity for his original print increasing the salabilty and value of it. if there are other types of compensation wanted im sure others could help, but I aint going to the negotiting table without proof he has the hostage It could be unknown photos, even a few seconds of footage not known to exist could bring me to the table.

I suspect that George may be waiting a while before he receives a severed ear through the post...

In the highly unlikely event that I find a man with a missing print, and I immediately buy it off him for, say, £400. Could I expect to get my money back from somewhere? Just out of curiosity of course - I've found no such gentleman!

good question.. Were really acting like 400.00 will break us finacially when we think of the value of the time we spend on dr who,is 400 really a lot in comparison? I think Ian Levine has a standing offer of a full size dalek for the return of an episode. When the man found the crusades print and returned it, he got a lot of publicity for the sale of the print, granted it didnt make him a millionare as he expected, but the BBC did allow him to sell it and the publicity got him a lot more potential bidders than he would have gotten otherwise.
Regardless, i think if 20 of us wouldnt chip in 20.00 then shame on us. If worst came to worst, while not wishing to volunteer, if I was really the only one who cared then id try to work something out.
But this is merely a hypothecial.. Im not going to talk hypotheically until we have a print on the table and an offer. Very bad to negotiate over nothing.

There's little I can add to what's already been said; but I just sent the chippy in question a very polite PM in which I asked him straight out if he was telling the truth. It wasn't accusatory at all, just to the point. His reply was that it was just a wind up, and he didn't have either episode. Just checked my actual PMs to and from him, and I had misremembered some of the detail; he said he didn't have Web 2, but did have copies of Web 1 and Evil 2. There's other details I had misremembered, too, but the point remains that he said he had no missing Dr Who.

Web 1 and Evil 2 are two of the most common prints out there, those were two of the episodes that were 'borrowed' in the 1980s and copied. I'm not at all surprised that someone has prints of those.

What were the episodes "borrowed" and how many prints of each were made? I heard something along the lines that Super-8 Sound copies were made as well as 16mm, but I've never seen those turn up.

I have no idea how many prints of each were made. I've seen super 8 prints of a few of them - I had a print of "Wheel (3)" at one point in super 8, and I've seen a few others.
The titles I recall are Evil (2), Web (1), Wheel (3), Chase (6), Invasion (6) and I think one episode from Dalek invasion of earth... Might be one or two others - I think Richard Bignell had the whole list at one point...

I am rather taken aback by the rampant speculation this thread has engendered. A person no-one on this board has even met started claiming that they have missing DW, and suddenly we're all talking about stumping up to pay for the tapes... George D has it right - the claimant, 'Mick', or indeed anyone who says they've got something undiscovered must show some proof that there is missing DW. It doesn't take much effort in the way of off-screen photos sent through email, or a few minutes of footage recorded on a cameraphone, to provide such proof.
But somehow, and to my lasting regret, I don't think that sort of proof will be forthcoming on this one...

Yes, they're the ones that have been verified. I think someone said to me at one point they thought that an episode of The Keys of Marinus might have been done as well, but I haven't seen any evidence of that.

It's a massive jump to say we're all 'suddenly talking about stumping up to pay for the tapes'. I've seen nothing more than friendly discussion and a couple of innocent questions about hypothetical situations..
