Not exactly a cheerful thought. My grand-dad had a lot of books, maps, etc. he'd put together over the years. When he died,my gran disposed of them. When older guys die off,in the majority of cases their widows seem not to have been fellow collectors. At the risk of being thought sexist,it seems to be a bloke thing to a large extent to hoard books, films. I think someone suggested before that the best place to spread the news about the search would be something like The Lady magazine.

I think someone suggested before that the best place to spread the news about the search would be something like The Lady magazine. There have been some excellent suggestions on these MBs about getting the message to the hard-to-reach groups and we need to persue them all. There are many stories of irreplaceable stuff just being binned when someone dies - although the advent of Ebay has helped. I'll quote a personal example. My grandfather died in 1999 and his widow (my step-Grandmother) a little under a decade later. For many years we used to visit them and about once a year we'd get a "slide show" of the places they'd visited in the previous year. After my step-Grandmother died we had the opportunity to go through the house before it was "cleared". I knew that, somewhere, there was a collection of potentially interesting slides. Eventually we found them Most were Kodachrome - which has great archival qualities - and, amongst the earliest, were colour pictures of my (little) sister's christening in the Autumn of 1966. I knew that the "archive" was potentially interesting but had no idea exactly what was included - or from what date. If I hadn't known about this collection I'm close to 100% certain that it would have been binned.

Of course it would be very nice to know that such a prime piece of Troughton survives... Actually, if you think about it, 'Web of Fear' Episode 2, isn't strictly speaking a "piece of Troughton". Of course, I am nit-picking here.

Good point. What if someone had prints of Episodes 1 or 4 of The Invasion..... I am trying not to think about that. It is too depressing.

Is this an episode where Troughton had a week off,or something? If so,I'd have to argue that a pair of feet poking out of an army blanket would count more than most as "a piece of Troughton"

Troughton had a week off that week. This was the week that troughton was mia after the yeti held back the explosions with the web, I think at the end you may see some feet walking in the tunnel where colonial lethbridge stewart is about to approach him, but wheather that is footage with troughton or a stand in I can not say.
Some one did to an excellent recon of this episode with movement.

Well, I've had a few pleasent replys from the poster. His name is Paul. He still says he has Web of Fear 1+2 and Evil of the Daleks ep 2 - a fantastic print, he said it may have come from same the BBC copy as he got it from the fellow who supplied the BBC (Hendry maybe?). His favourite Doctor is Patrick Troughton and he would like missing prints returned and he will not part with his. He says that he contacted a guy for the Dimensions in Time convention at the Swallo Hotel in Stockton? and said shall I bring my 3 Dr Who episodes with me and said he wasn't interested. Seems he's been put off telling people about them. Another guy called Mick has cropped up who may have other episodes that he may not know about. It is strange as he didn't really have any reply to some of my comments. I'll see if I can see if I can get anything else out of him.

His favourite Doctor is Patrick Troughton and he would like missing prints returned and he will not part with his. . So he wants others to part with theirs (if they exist) but he wont part with his?

Ahh.. nothing like someone presenting themself as a "taker" to build their credibility up. where is this guy located?
I would start simply, not asking for a copy but simply asking for some sort of verification. (such as visiting him, a clip, text a photo etc) from web of fear episode 2. Its not hard to aim a camera at a projecter for a second or two. IF he actually can come up with a few stills, then that would be impressive. Maybe someone can offer to take him to lunch or something. The key at this point is simply *verifying* its existance. Im sure we could make the guy very happy, if he's legit (which unfortunately seems unlikely)
I would caution people from viewing this as a find at this point. The odds are still that this is a false alarm.

In theory, the expression "he would like missing prints returned and he will not part with his" means no worse than "wants to be present when copies are made" which has been laid down before by anxious people. Unlikely.Just barely possible.

I'm still unsure about this - i'm still going to chat to him to see if i can get him to slip up or proof. To be honest regards of whether it is true or not, would any of you give away something for nothing to make others happy, I know I would just to show my contribution, this is a problem with film collectors if they paid a lot for something and get nothing for it. He thinks that the BBC should offer a reward.

His favourite Doctor is Patrick Troughton and he would like missing prints returned and he will not part with his. The man's story changes almost every time he tells it and he always comes up with an excuse as to why he can't return or sell a film print. The last time he mentioned how he acquired episode 2 of The Web of Fear, he said he bought it from Australia. If he can't be honest from the beginning, it is obvious that he can't be trusted. In order to convince me that he has a missing episode from The Web of Fear, he would have to show me three consecutive minutes of moving footage from the episode without any cuts to other scenes in that episode. Anybody could take the edited clips that survive from episode 2 to make it appear as if they had something. As for somebody named Mick that might have something, if Paul is the one giving you Mick's name, then I would say he is probably just having fun with you and wasting your time. If you think Mick is on the level, send private messages to either Ash Stewart or Paul Vanezis to inform them about this. Let them decide whether to contact him and see if he is a credible lead or not.

It would be extremely disturbing that someone would deliberatly sabotage efforts and try to get his hands on the episodes so he can only ever enjoy them for himself and get a kick out of it.
