To answer one of your questions concerning the Dalek photographs; Yes, they are off-screen, as you can see the TV scan lines. The first is from episode 2, and the other two seem to be from part four. Thanks Jon

Here's the Evil 5 one that I found on a scan of the magazine. It's very poor quality, I'm afraid, but genuine. Now that I see it, I'm not sure whether this is an off-air picture, or a picture from the Radio Times. I've not seen it anywhere else though. www.qusheet.com/misc/evil5.bmp

There is an off-air photo of Evil (part 5 I think), which was printed in Space and Time (as I believe it was then called, the magazine prior to In-Vision) in their Evil of the Daleks edition. I used to have it but I sold my collection some years ago. Richard You can buy it here www.heroesassemble.com/doctor-who-the-evil-of-the-daleks-cms-in-vision-rare-1310-p.aspIt's not a good picture (Jeremy Bentham must surely have the original) and apart from collector's value this is a very flimsy magazine which I would hardly say was worth the money now .... no disrespect to the original publishers - if you want to spend £30 - go for it. Here's a scan of the pic I assume you're referring to (sorry about the quality!) Not sure if this is one of the ones Richard has accounted for, or not? ETA: Ha - beaten to it! (But at least this one displays inline...)

These questions are about the Marco Polo images? 1) Do we know from which broadcast these images were taken in Australia? (Or for that matter which broadcast these images weren't taken from?) 2) Someone mentioned one of the eight Marco Polo images turning out to be from another serial. Is this true? 3) Has the image from The Aztecs which was found alongside these images been piublished? If so where? 1) Marco aired in seven ABC regions, and was later repeated in three of them. Which of those the images came from is known to a few, but has not been made public. 2) There are two photos that are close-ups of the Doctor. In both, his hairstyle is very different, as well as being different to the style he has in Marco... 3) In The DWB Compendium.

Thank you Jon Preddle for the further info. I am interested to know which broadcast the Marco Polo images came from and was wondering where I could find out or who I should ask? Are the eight images, although not known for certain, generally considered to be from Marco Polo? Does anyone know here I can view The Aztec image online or does anyone have a copy of the DWB Compendium?
Thank you Giles and Richard for the image from an AAIS&T. Does anyone have an actual copy of that issue because I would quite like a scan of the whole page?
Thank you all once again for the help it has been really fascinating!

I am interested to know which broadcast the Marco Polo images came from and was wondering where I could find out or who I should ask? As would I! However those who do know aren't saying, and won't even if you did ask them. Are the eight images, although not known for certain, generally considered to be from Marco Polo? Yes, they are definitely from Marco Polo, no question about it; Marco Polo (Mark Eden) appears in one of them, and others feature Susan and Barbara wearing oriental gowns. They also match up with the telesnaps. I'm curious - why all the questions about these images? What do you intend to do with the information?

Firstly Jon I am the sort of person who likes to know everything about a certain topic. Off-Air photographs seemed a good place to start when looking at missing episodes because there isn't that much to know when you compare it with the recovery of clips, for example. Secondly I have realised that not every missing episode is going to be found (which is pretty obvious and so I should have realised that ages ago!) and so have decided I want to grasp everything that does exist from these episodes with both hands. Thirdly I am interested in making a series of short videos about stuff that does exist from missing episodes for YouTube. However I want them to be accurate videos with precise detail. I hate vague and incorrect videos on YouTube. I hope I'm not being a pain, I am just interested and this is the best place to find answers!

No problem Simeon, as a matter of fact your questions have brought to light some interesting discussions on this thread and also the mention of a photo (Troughton from 'The Web of Fear') that is not currently held in the archives! Let's hope that it's found...
In concern to the photos from 'Marco Polo', I guess that the thing with the Doctor's hairstyle could have just been a continuity error by the person who fitted William Hartnell's wig, or something like that. I guess we'll never know, but it is interesting...
Does anyone know if the off-air photo of Evil as mentioned above has a master print that is of better quality? If it was from the Radio Times then perhaps not, but that may not be the case. I love threads like this, because they get people thinking, a bit of digging gets done and (very rarely) new leads may even be discovered! I know that sounds overly-optimistic, but still... I agree with you, Simeon, that it's likely that other off-screen photos may exist and as the number of recovered episodes are dwindling then perhaps we should search more thoroughly in other avenues.

Well David C, I believe that the Evil photo (Gordon ‘Drog’ Lengden Images) is being republished in NATEOTL Issue 3 so the image will probably be of better quality in there! Plus we will finally get to see the second image!

I guess we'll never know, but it is interesting... The original camera negatives of those Marco / Aztecs photos are probably long-gone, so we may never know the order in which they were taken, and where in the sequence of shots the unidentified Hartnell image comes. That would certainly help narrow down where it's from! From the telesnaps that exist from part seven, the Doctor appears to be wearing his spectacles throughout, but in the off-screen shot he is sans glasses. It's a pity the background detail is so indistinct.

Thank you Giles and Richard for the image from an AAIS&T. Does anyone have an actual copy of that issue because I would quite like a scan of the whole page? Don't have the actual issue in hand but I do have a scan of the whole thing. Will pm you shortly to avoid cluttering the thread. I notice there's also a pic of Victoria, Ruth and the Maid which I hadn't seen before, but I suspect that's just a publicity shot that I'm unfamiliar with... Does anyone know if the off-air photo of Evil as mentioned above has a master print that is of better quality? I'd happily ask Jeremy B, but (a) it's 20 years ago, so he might not recall, and (b): Well David C, I believe that the Evil photo (Gordon ‘Drog’ Lengden Images) is being republished in NATEOTL Issue 3 so the image will probably be of better quality in there! Plus we will finally get to see the second image! Let's wait and see if that's the case first. Eagerly awaiting my copy too...

We also feature the three off-screen photos that Terry Reason took from Evil and his two images from Web, along with Gordon Lengden's two images from Evil. This is what Mr. Bignell wrote earlier on in the thread!!!

These are the two Australian photos. One is from The Aztecs, the other might or might not be from Marco Polo. I'll leave you to work out which is which!

Thank you Jon. I have seen the picture on the right before (from the website I linked to in the original post) and I believe that is the image thought to be from Marco Polo. The other I have not seen and so am presuming is from The Aztecs. The one on the right I have given some restoration work to remove the scratches which makes it look far better. I will hopefully do this to the other off-air photos soon! Thanks once again for the picture John as I couldn't find it anywhere.
