No, I think you must be wrong there, Peter. When BBC-2 screened a compilation of the series in the '90s to celebrate ATV, they used some native PAL b/w clips taken from VT (and clearly shot that way - Ella Fitzgerald was one). My guess is that maybe a b/w version was shot for UK use for the first series and then colour afterwards - does anyone have transmission dates for the show, just out of interest? This one's a real conundrum though and I wonder if we'll ever get to the bottom of it?!

I can come up with a full list of dates for all shows on ITV and US TV, but it will take me some time.
I'm unable to do that right now, but if I get time and someone's home computer, I can do this.

Not to worry, Ray. I was particularly interested in first and last dates of each series, just to see the time period they covered and how many episodes in total. Some of the UK editions do seem to survive but I'm not clear what percentage of the total this amounts to.

Thanks. The first link is very useful as it works as an episode guide to who did what in each show. It gets more confusing too though as it clearly states that some episodes were taped in Hollywood (rather than two tapings on consecutive days here in the UK, as Ray outlined above)!

The 2010 email at the bottom of the page from Ivor Allison says "As far as I know ALL absolutely ALL 'This is Tom Jones' were recorded at ATV Elstree".I'd be more convinced he he said "I know". I'm impressed by the extensive U.S. copyright details/production numbers.Would there be a way of accessing these records directly? Production no.255 is listed as "missing".

Cor.I've just read the BFI page properly-about time, since I posted the link! "First shows made in London, later the origination alternated between London and Hollywood."I suppose it was possible that: (1)The London shows being shot in both PAL and NTSC. (2)The Hollywood shows ditto. I suppose it would have been unlikely/impossible for the Americans just to have shot theirs in NTSC,and left the problem of broadcasting in the UK to their British counterparts?

Phew! It gets more confusing by the minute - so definitely all shot at Elstree and also later alternating between London and Hollywood then?! The latter option seems likely though (i.e. all at Elstree early on and swapping between locations later) as a lot of the guest line-ups for many shows are very American and I can't imagine all of the acts would have flown over to Elstree just to appear on the show if they weren't coming over anyway (some did, obviously). The guy commenting at the bottom of the first link though seems to be an ex-ATV staffer with inside knowledge of crews / cameras etc. so I'd take those comments as being fairly credible. He was probably referring to the early episodes (the ones he had direct experience of) as all being shot at Elstree. Interesting though that The Who appearance (Pinball Wizard) is on the DVD set as a b/w telerecording when it also exists as both a b/w VT and a colour one!

Hopefully, these people aren't quoting each other as evidence; I notice that CTVA give the BFI as a source.I do get the impression that some shows were shot in the States.Pity there's no end-credit,or better yet,a voice-over saying "And now, from beautiful, downtown Burbank..."!

The newspaper clippings seem to confirm it was all at Elstree for series 1 anyway so I reckon it changed for series 2.
