By the way, it's interesting what you say about the Who appearance only existing as a b/w t/r as I have seen a copy of the appearance (Pinball Wizzard) as b/w VT! So it's out there somewhere - possibly sourced from Pete Townshend's official download site, from what you say! Probably Amazon is your best bet as they have second hand ones as well. No the DVD has the Who TR on, but as the DVD was made in the US , it may have been what they could find at the time? and as you say the master may still be in The Who archive?

The next issue - is to ascertain whether the first season exists complete or partially in ANY version in the archive holders vaults.
I suspect - but can't yet prove - that the second and/or third season were shot with the same cameras, so only one version.
Laurence is correct in regards to the copyright, in my opinion.
Like I said, my main thing here is to confirm that all the episodes exist. If they are all USA versions and NTSC, that is still far far better than nowt at all.

Basically if you want the 'This is Tom Jones' show 1969/70 as opposed to anything else he has done On DVD - You either want the Time Life releases from 2007 and pt2 in 2008 On VHS - there is an older Polygram release, which is a compilation IIRC.

This may be of no help at all... In about 1991 when it was 1991, I was doing some work for a US station and wanted to use a clip from "this is Tom Jones" featuring Little Richard. Although Jon Keeble did have the 2" (and I can't remember whether it was PAL or NTSC), he didn;t have the money to transfer it so we used a 16mm telerecording instead. Also I do know that Mark Woodward (i.e. Tom's son & manager) is looking for the previous ATV B&W Tom Jones series of which none seems to exist; I know that cause he told me! But you probably know that as well...

Little Richard is Season 2 27/11/69.
It's possible the b/w (S1) may be around or wiped. Still trying to get the time to research that!

Ah, i'm presuming you mean the earlier Tom series (rather than This Is...) from 1966 / 67, Mark? Just clarifying so that people don't think we're talking about the b/w series 1 of This Is... (of which some editions exist)! Kal also only list there being two series of This Is... rather than three (although some of the dates for series two are pretty scattered). It would be handy if someone from Kal could comment.

I know I'm not from Kal, Laurence, but seasons 2 and 3 did overlap in UK tx dates....
here's an example....
S2E2 US tx 02/10/69 UK tx 11/10/70
By the time this was broadcast in the UK, the US had already had 3 episodes shown of season 3!
US dates S1 Feb69-May69 UK Feb69-May69 S2 Sept69-April70 Nov69-Nov70 S3 Sept70-Jan71 (est) Sept70-Jan71
The above UK TX dates (S3) are guestimated, I have no full list YET.

Laurence - yep, I was referring to the B&W series which I think may have just been called "Tom Jones"... but it was made by ATV but not the high production values of the "this is TJ" series. It might have even been pre-nose job!

Here's the sample regarding to differences between UK / US versions of the show. Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger & The Trinity (February 28, 1969) - www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgKiDt5wlWIIn the left channel soundtrack of b/w UK TV version, on right audio from colour US version. For audio and video can be seen, that varies not only filming but also the actual performance.

Hi there guys - are you saying that the box set DVD isnt of complete TJ episodes - i havnt read all the posts so im not up to date - sorry Ivor, I have the first Time-Life U.S. box set from 2007 (the Rock and Roll stars edition), and the shows unfortunately are not complete. I guess it's rights issues again. The U.S. Smothers Brothers variety shows on DVD are similar to TITJ, with the shows edited down to 30-35 minutes each (for the most part). Nevertheless, it's great to have the TITJ programs, even in edited form, on DVD. I hadn't seen these shows since their original airings. So, it was a kick to see the performances by Mary Hopkin, The Who, Janis Joplin, Stevie Wonder, etc. Marshall A look at my favorite Now That's What I Call Music! releases: marshfish.hubpages.com/hub/A-look-at-some-Now-Thats-What-I-Call-Music-releasesand Five classic U.S. TV shows still unavailable on home video: marshfish.hubpages.com/hub/Five-classic-US-TV-shows-still-unavailable-on-home-video
