Wasnāt someone of this parish having a go at colourising IOTD1? Mind you, the dinosaurs were so unbelievably bad, the whole serial is crying out for a CGI makeover IMHO. I think Iāll get my coatā¦ā¦

Given how out of touch the show was with the grimmer iteration of Batman, it;s a blessing that it did come out! Remember at the time, a lot of, shall we say, the more āpuristā for want of a better word, super hero fans were very upset with the 60ās version of Batman as they, quite rightly, perceived that it was taking the mick!

My primitive edit with an acetate mix of the song dubbed on, is the most watched YouTube version and has been shown (a clip of) on BBC4?! Lazy buggers. The one in the documentary was not my version thank God..!! š¤£ Donāt be so modest, you did a cracking job considering what you had to work with!

I wasn't sure if that was appreciated here because technically, it's a copyright grey area. But yes, that was the list that made me go, "with so many audio recordings, is there really no tape reel that covers this mute material"? Good point, sometimes youāve just got to highlight the existence of material like this.

Has anything been heard about this? I am fascinated that it was on a 'computer tape' how does that work? A technical explanation please. Probably reused 1/2ā computer tape wound on to 5ā reel to reel spools. I believe computer tape, although apparently of lower grade, was cheaper and could give acceptable results for early home video. Tapes were extremely expensive back then.

Another wee bit of wiped - it's that 'Blue Peter for the pensioners' show again, Years Ahead featuring that most erst of erstwhiles Robert Dougall. How so? Is he really more erstwhile than anything else on the list? Well, as a child of the 60ās I would say that of course he was! š

I always think that the loss of all those Dixon episodes is desperately sad as it represents a great example BBC family TV during a time that I, and I suspect a lot of others on here were growing up. Not to mention all the effort, time and money that went in to making them of course. It was also always there during a period of major social change and provided a reassuring anchor for many older people during that time.

To start with the end: There was NO "extra" footage shown in the Netherlands when they aired I, Claudius: Zeus, by Jove. This concerns the scene, of course, where Caligula murders his sister in a fit of madness (one fit of many, or perhaps just one very long fit). Cuts were made at the last minute behind the director's back and an extra edit after broadcast. It was rumoured that a less edited version was shown in the Netherlands. Now first of all I must partly take responsability for keeping the idea alive in the first place. I occasionally mentioned it on message boards such as this. But it was reported, at the time, by director Paul Verhoeven in a newspaper article. That made it worth checking. People also reported details that they remembered seeing. But as mentioned above, it was a false hope. An off-air finally turned up in the Netherlands last year; but it was identical. So that's the end of that story. Only a UK off air tape might shed any light on what was edited after the premiere. (Maybe that was just the music and credits being matched better.) The only possible takeaway is that a scene like this can have a certain effect: Because a lot is implied, viewers will add that to their memory. I don't even think anyone lied deliberately. Secondly, it's still a horrible moment, and that probably led people to think they had seen the uncut version. I'm still glad that I followed up - thanks to M.F. for checking. Good bit of research, letās hope an off air from the UK first broadcast turns up, unlikely as it is. Without wishing to start the debate off again, Iām convinced that the first screening was cut less but I do accept that the memory can cheat.

One thing to note is how discoveries have changed in recent years.... When I started doing this in the latter part of the 2000s, and I hadnae got a Scooby of what I was doing I took advice from a lot of people; this was also around the time youtube started. A particular gent told me my discoveries were all 'rubbish' as they were on digital and not the original film/video tape. So for around six months I contacted uploaders to ask if they could send the original film/tape to whichever respective archive was appropriate. Most didn't reply. A significant percentage had disposed of the original film/tape for varying reasons and the digital copy was all that existed. I think there was only one case in which the actual film was returned. Anyway, I went back to the gent who was giving me advice and said 'look, most of these uploaders have disposed of the original film/tape, what do I do?'. He still maintained digital files were 'not good enough'. So I sent back a polite, but very sarcastic missive saying that should I ever find a Doctor Who and it was on a digital format only because the owner had transferred their film/tape because it was decaying, I'd take his advice word-for-word, reject it as 'rubbish' and bin it. He blocked me. That reminds me of my call to the BBC Treasure Hunt. āYes, the radio programs you have are missing from the archive, but because they arenāt recorded at professional speed (15 IPS) and the content will no longer be suitable for broadcast, we donāt want themā. Not bad for missing childrenās radio broadcasts recorded in high quality off FM.
