Evening, all. X is reporting the recovery of a missing Dixon of Dock Green from 1959, a year from which no episodes were previously known to exist. It's Duffy Calls The Tune, featuring everyone's favourite tramp, Duffy Clayton. x.com/Jamesh8/status/1762187262790336704?s=20Apparently a film collector returned it to the BBC and they've given permission for it to be shown alongside the others on TPTV, on 30 March. Brilliant news.

Brilliant, Rob! "Steve Roberts, Principal Operations Engineer for BBC Archives, has informed us of where the episode came from. “This episode was recently loaned to BBC Archives by a film collector. Once it had been scanned, we contacted TPTV as we were aware they were screening all extant episodes to let them know there was an additional one they could show”. Steve continues; “The film was one of three missing BBC programmes loaned to us by a private collector with whom we have had a relationship with for a number of years, via an intermediary that has been responsible for negotiating the return of a number of missing BBC films in the past”. Thanks to Steve for providing further context." www.oldtimereview.co.uk/talking-pictures-tv-to-air-newly-discovered-dixon-of-dock-green-episode/

The 2 other programmes are an episode of Johnny Speights 'Them' and a yet to be announced find which will probably feature in a missing believed wiped episode later in the year (Not doctor who) according to Steve Roberts

This is superb news. I enjoyed the four existing 1950s episodes when they were repeated on BBC2 in the early '90s and so to have a fifth returned to the archives is wonderful. I shall look forward to seeing it.

Excellent! I had been under the impression that there were only four 1950s episodes, and I seem to recall BBC Two only repeated four in 1991 (although I could of course be mistaken!). Did they miss one out, or was the fifth one returned some time after this?

... an episode of Johnny Speights 'Them' ... Is this the only surviving Duffy episode? What is Them? I've never heard of it. And the IMDB description is weird.

IMDB credits Harold Scott as playing Duffy in 19 episodes. www.imdb.com/name/nm0779211/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t39On a quick skim through, it looks like TVBrain lists them all as missing. But TVBrain isn't always right, and is sometimes out of date.

Does anyone know why so little survives? Was it not sold overseas?
Thanks
