If they're unlabelled video tapes in an obsolete format...

If they're unlabelled video tapes in an obsolete format... Doesn't matter for Doctor Who, they were never available to filch as VT, only as 16mm films. The VT was quite clearly re-used for other stuff. So yes, unlabelled VT may get thrown away, a film in a can however, less so.

We were talking about why so few over-the-air VCR/VTR-recordings have surfaced from the 60s Who, but yes the film cans always had better odds.

I asked elsewhere why wealthy fans didn't get video recorders in the late 60s/early 70s and record Dr Who. There's as much evidence for that as there is for fans (other than Ian Levine) trying to acquire 16mm prints, i.e., very little All sorts of things get binned when people die. Some people have no interest whatsoever in their spouse's hobbies, pastimes, etc and when they're gone they just get rid of it. Nowadays there is a possibility that things might be listed on Ebay, etc but a lot - even 16mm film cans - is just dumped It's not really surprising. Not many private individuals had 16mm equipment and the number must be even less now.

I have already told my son not to just take my not inconsiderable record collection to a local dealer when i die - but I just know he won't be bothered to take the time to look through and see which ones are valuable, and which ones are not I think many spouses / offspring will be the same unfortunately - to 99% of people, a pile of old films their parents / partner had are just junk, not even worth a second look. We're also hading to a time where the newer generation may not even know what they are looking at when they see a pile of films. I know people even in their 20's who did not know what a record was. Quite how you get through to such people i do not know!

I've got quite a large specialist library - although I expect to be around for a very long time my will specifies where it should go.

Hopefully anybody hoarding missing episodes has Paul Vanezis or Dick Fiddy named as a beneficiary.

Also in Africa, if they were handed around to other countries unofficially we have to consider that there are French, and portuguese speaking countries in that region ! We cant rule out anything that is possible. Unoficcial bicycling probably never happened. A: It's espensive to send them. B: There's no record of any country broadcasting DW other than those who actually paid to do so. C: When asked to bicycle prints on, the countries who were asked to do so always did so without saying "there will be a (insert period) delay while we get them back from (insert) who broadasted the eps unoficially because we unoficially lent them to them"
On point B there actually has been a bit of a revelation recently with the Taiwan finds, there clearly were broadcasts that were otherwise unknown of. However, it is very unlikely.

Of course things went on outside of what was officially known !

There were prints found in Taiwan. That doesn't mean that they were broadcast in Taiwan.

Hopefully anybody hoarding missing episodes has Paul Vanezis or Dick Fiddy named as a beneficiary. Hmm...I can hear it being read out now: "And furthermore, I bequeath my illegally obtained (or stolen) missing Dr Who episode hoard to ..." Precarious! The fear is if these people die there family would just junk them. My ex works in a care home, and when the people die the first thing the family does is seek high value items they have and ditch the rest ! Even family pics and sentimental stuff !. I wonder if this has happened to some cans !
