My rule of thumb: If anyting is too good to be true, it most certaintly is.
Helped me out a lot. I like to sit back and appreciate the good work that Ian Levine and Phillip Morris do.

There was a time not long ago when I really thought Web of Fear and EOTW was too good to be true :-) Now I just think: who knows, wait and see. But it's truly clear there's been a far greater number of films discovered than I ever would have thought possible.

DWA got it from Roobarbs, where it was posted by Nick Gilbert. They've now given credit to Nick. But he did not record the doco, only took notes. To me it sounded like he was being coy because recording it would be "naughty". He said the quote was accurate which would leave the impression that it may have been recorded...

Merry Christmas all.
Now down to business. Yes, I've read the transcript, but didn't have time to post anything yesterday due to personal reasons, but what I want to say/point out, is that the transcript "seems" to contain quite a few "inaccuracies".
Paul V kindly posted a list of the confirmed returns so far. Sadly, some of which isn't even recoverable, but everyone who has seen the apparent state of that M&W print even in its can, knows there is no chance in hell of recovering that with current technology. However, the list of confirmed returns, is VERY meagre to say the least. Around a dozen or so.
Yet, in the transcript, we have DF saying, and I quote from it here, " I think, I believe it has all been returned to the UK now. The majority most probably will have been returned to the BBC. Assessing this material will take a long time and restoring it will take even longer … we know this is a major find."
So, on one hand we have DF saying there has been a major find, even going so far as to say "we KNOW this is a major find", (emphasis really is on the word, know, there) so he obviously knows a whole lot more than what he can publicly say, and even goes on to mention on a possible scale of tens of thousands of cans of film.
Therefore on the face of it, DF's claim that he KNOWS there has been a MAJOR find, and that the majority of it has by now most probably been returned to the BBC. Really, really, really, doesn't add up with Paul V's statement that only a dozen or so films have been returned. (some of which were already known about such as TSAN). (Somewhow I don't envisage DF's terminology of "major" as being a dozen or so cans of film)
It's an enormous disparity between the two, and that imo is in need of serious clarification.
I also noted with interest the following excerpt from the transcript, again by DF. "The primary aim is to get the material safely back in the archive to the benefit of all of us not for the benefit of one or two manic collectors who wanted it in their own private collection."
This seems to imply that a large amount of stuff HAS indeed been recovered from 1-2 manic collectors. He even states "wanted" as in the past tense. Meaning that they DID hoard a load of stuff and it has now been recovered from them. Even making that statement at all is significant, it's not something you just make up on the cuff. He seems to be stating it as fact imo.
On the face of it, that strongly correlates with some of the initial rumours (iirc, Sky News even stated it). That a hoard had been recovered from an eccentric film engineer in Ethiopia. Ethiopia also ties in with the retracted statement on the 50th anniversary itself too.
Somehow, I just get the feeling that sometime soon we are in for a major surprise as regards Doctor Who, and I'm not just talking a few more orphaned episodes.
Finally, also from the transcript. DF seems to imply that the BBC are indeed paying PM for the haul he has brought back. "They had to deal right with Phil Morris and make sure they were doing the right thing as opposed to their own charter." Their charter probably says they can't pay for the return of copyrighted material, DF seems to say that due to the significance, they wanted to pay, and have found a way to do so.

Philip Morris has almost certainly recovered more programmes/reels than than the few we know about. However, unless there are reels in the wrong cans - which is certainly possible - I don't think there is any more missing Dr Who. The reason is, as I've pointed out before, that PM is a fan like the rest of us and if, hypothetically, he found one or more episodes of Fury, Power, etc he'd be biting his fingernails wanting to watch them. Look at EotW/WoF, Paul Vanezis did the conservation/cleaning/stabilisation in late April/early May and then they were transferred at the beginning of June - that's the first time anybody could actually sit down and enjoy them. There are lots of other good things missing from the archives; I'm extremely happy to have a couple of missing Sky at Night's back

Let's not forget that if it is true about "1-2 manic collectors" that the material wouldn't exist without them.

I think we should just wait and see what happens, exciting though it is to speculate on what has been found, but no amount of analyzing and dissecting what people such as Paul V and Dick F have said will make things any clearer. As Steven Moffatt said this doesn't make Phil's job any easier and as Phil has already given us back 9 amazing episodes that we never thought we would ever see I think we need to support him in his efforts, the best way that we can do that is by not spreading rumours and nagging for the truth, he's doing this for us after all

He's clearly a very brave man - malaria, going into areas where bombs are regularly going off and massacres occurring. He's out Levined Ian Levine !

I guess the stakes are high considering most of these african places are dangerous. Im happy with what we have already got. And am sure if we are lucky not the last....
