I'd say you've hit the nail on the head with that one.

Of course, what better way to introduce a new iplayer by giving people something they'd want to watch? As this is part of a keynote speech covering various topics, having Lord Hall announce the recovery there would be logical.

There is still some talk on other forums that the BBC don't even have these back, if there has even been a find. So how can they release items on iTunes if they haven't got them?
Hoax.

Of course, what better way to introduce a new iplayer by giving people something they'd want to watch? I have no doubt that Doctor Who would be available to watch on this service, but its launch is 2014 and i can't picture the reveal of missing episodes being lumped in with this.

It will be two separate things at two separate PR, the Director General is hardly likely to announce anything Doctor Who, they have their own people for that

Ok. I dip in and out of these pages because there are some very knowledgeable contributors and I have learned a great deal about classic Doctor Who.
I presume an iTunes release is the quickest way to get 'new' material released in time for the 50th anniversary. I'm creeping towards the excitement levels I had way back when when Tomb of the Cybermen was recovered, a story I never thought I would set eyes upon.
If there is some hoaxing afoot it is very cruel indeed.

They would not combine the two, they want peoples full attention for the new Iplayer and likely so for any recovery.

There wouldn't be, as no BBC press release has been issued - yet. Do the BBC generally issue press releases for hoaxes? Let's hope the BBC don't issue a press release tomorrow because that'll mean they've been taken in by this awful hoax themselves!

They would not combine the two, they want peoples full attention for the new Iplayer and likely so for any recovery. It's being described as being a "keynote speech," not just about the iPlayer. Lord Hall is scheduled to tackle other subjects such as increased funding for arts coverage, and partnerships with the British Museum and the Tate. Having him make the official announcement of the recovery is logical.

To be clear.
The BBC; funded by the license fee, make programmes and operate iplayer, it has NO BBC Worldwide participation in the UK iplayer.
The BBC press conference on iplayer is not related to BBC Worldwide.
BBC Worldwide, sell the BBC's products commercially, i.e. archive programming etc.
If there was an announcement on recovery, it would come from BBC Worldwide IMHO.
Having read the board for sometime. I really do not like the way some individuals are down right rude about anyone saying anything different than them.
The debate about lost/destroyed/never to be found. BBC Worldwide say they are LOST. End of. The paperwork saying destroyed has been proved to be incorrect.
"Don't you think you're being rather high-handed, young man? You thought you saw a young girl enter the yard, you imagine you heard her voice, you believe she might be in there. Not very substantial, is it?

True, since the BBC would have no interest in BBC Worldwide since it doesn't own BBC Worldwide or anything silly like that. Oh wait, the BBC DOES own BBC Worldwide. Again, it makes sense for Lord Hall to make the announcement.
