This is a dumb question, but whats the probability that it wasn't 16mm and that they were actually watching the macra on the telly after school? The probability is Zero. 1) there was a projector 2) it was the afternoon; DW usually aired 6.30pm 3) Neil had already seen the episode/s

broadwcast.org says Macra was broadcast in NZ from 1969-1970 ... whereas the film was exhibited at the school from 1972-1974. It could not have been a TV broadcast.

Strange that The Crusade did not. Not really, if the BBC didn't want it back. Could we *assume* then that The Ice Warriors and Fury from the Deep may have similarly been sent home? Apart from the late sale by Gibraltar we were the last in the chain to screen season five stories. If the BBC thought Troughton wouldn't sell very well then the 'untouched' prints might as well be returned...? Yes, That is likely. There is also no record of what happened to The Web Planet and Dalek Invasion of Earth, two other stories that didn't air. Those two might also have been sent home packing if they weren't wanted.

Do you know what episodes of Macra Neil remembers seeing at that school showing Jon?1,2,3,4? No. But if the people that David has contacted remember the 'crabs' then probably not ep 1.

Unless they were gifted with seeing two episodes to fill in that hour. Then it's possible to show them 1 and 2 ... or anything else with crabs.

Ref Fury, wasn't a Fury Episode 6 can with something different in discovered in NZ or am I miss-remembering? Not conclusive but if so suggests that they were probably junked.

Hi Bobby. Yes, I have planned to add a copy of the newspaper article to those two groups. All members from the above have been personally contacted, but as you say, it'll be a good 'permanent' notice for future members. Cheers Dave

Hi Stephen. Neil recalls, to the best of his knowledge, that it was two episodes of Macra and the second was cut short because the busses arrived to return the kids to their school. The presumption would be episodes 1&2, but we can't be sure. Well done, I just hope we find something at the end of the rainbow but even if there's sad news at least we know that this avenue has been thoroughly checked out. Also, I'd just like to add that just because 2 episodes were shows, and I'm guessing we're thinking it's 1&2, if they were brought in to fill an hour, it doesn't mean that the other 2 episodes were not in the possession of the person who showed the 2 episodes. I hope all 4 are together but either way, this is a positive thing that you're doing and I wish you luck.

Finally got a chance to read the Wairarapa news article, David. It is very detailed and concise! I'm very impressed with the information it contains. It doesn't just say "episodes are missing", it accurately details why they're missing and why some of them come back and why New Zealand is important.
Not only could this article help jog the memories of students who may have seen "Macra", but it may also help jog the memory of 16mm collectors who "are entirely unaware their collections may be unique" as you said.
I hope this article has provided you with some new information!
