Hi RWels - no names have been mentioned, besides those of the schools, which was necessary to reveal in the newspaper article, as I needed to widen the search. Please don't think I'm against fans digging around - it's exactly what I've done in this case, I'd just ask anyone who has any thoughts to contact me so it's a coordinated effort rather than lose the good will of people involved in the search, because they're being repeatedly contacted. I hope that makes sense!
The prints are, naturally at the forefront of the search, and indeed one part of the search has been asking a wide net of people who may have been the source. However, the only way to solve the riddle is to find out when it happened. I can then find out who was organising it and, from that identify the potential characters involved. From that, I could find who provided the print and track them down (or relatives) to see if the prints survived. If they were sold on, we can then keep following the trail. But, to get anywhere near that far along, I need to firm up the basic facts.
Cheers Dave

Two points that are slightly Off Topic to this conversation:
1) The only other "Macra Lead" we've ever had was a disappointing "won't respond" of an eBay seller who had old tapes with "Macra 1 and 2" written on the label. I'll let people know now that a couple months ago I attempted once again to contact the seller. I simply asked for resolution to the matter, what happened, etc. He never replied back to me. I had attempted contact through eBay itself. In the end, as people have suggested, it's best to leave this as a hoax and move on.
2) Those ridiculous "I know a dude who knows a dude who has 40 episodes from various serials" hoaxes that happen every once in awhile do sound too good to be true, but I think I get why they need to at least be considered: If Macra Terror WASN'T destroyed by New Zealand/Australia/Etc then it may be possible others weren't as well... and what was written down as "junked/destroyed" was merely to satisfy the BBC's inquiry. There's the possibility that all of them were put on the skip and randomly grabbed by various people, but there's also a possibility that a bunch of them were picked up by one man. It's an almost IMPOSSIBLE and very unlikely scenario to happen, but because the possibility is THERE ... that may be why whenever they come up it's important to say "Please send Proof" ... instead of "That's impossible, please go away".

A fantastic read dear sir and thanks so much for the efforts you have gone to. This is the kind of long term investigation that could one day pay off.

A fascinating piece of research in itself. Please keep going with this work, even if we only find the prints were destroyed at the end.

This is the sort of effort we often berate each other for not attempting ourselves. But you are doing it! A fascinating article chronicling your journey so far. I will be fascinated to see where it ends up. Well done Sir!

Fantastic work, Dave. An object lesson to us all. Whether or not it leads to a (highly improbable) find, it's a thorough, sustained and fully professional attempt to get to the bottom of a long-standing rumour. I applaud you.

I'm a bit surprised; I thought bad weather was the long standing reason for the cancellation of the sports day. New Zealand often uses the Cricket rule - if it starts to rain, get the covers on and race inside!
