I'm curious why the Stevie Wonder Uptight clip is always listed as TOTP? It's quite clearly from a U.S. programme, it has all the tell-tale signs, it looks NTSC, has the 525 lines Orthicon tube look to it, and you can see the corners of the lens, something I've only ever seen on American VT programmes (even into the late 60's with Colour). Now it may have been aired on TOTP, but to me, it's clearly NOT from an actual British studio performance.

Wonder also performed "Hey Harmonica Man" on the same show. Only the "Uptight" performance was ever shown on Top of the Pops originally, but the "Hey Harmonica Man" clip was included on one of those "...at the BBC" compilations a while back (which makes absolutely zero sense since it was the fist time the BBC had even screened it.)

I'm always struck by the assortment of hairstyles on show in that clip! Not so much the girls who all look pretty trendy but of the lads in the clip. Of them all, the guy with the glasses dancing excitedly in half darkness is the only one who looks like he's in early 1966. Seriously though, on the 'Big Hits,'64-75' BBC4 compilation there is a significant amount of studio applause before the programme caption fades in and there is a little of that applause on this clip as well. Is that the applause from the Canadian show or the applause from the TOTP audience. I assume the latter as the applause comes while everyone's dancing. Talking of other shows on '60s Pops; Seeing the 'Tonight In Person' clip of Peter, Paul and Mary last week, does anyone know for sure if this is the source of the Totp insert of 'Early Morning Rain' (30/09/65) and is it the Totp insert that got shown on 'Sounds of the Sixties' folk edition?

Why is it that the existing TOTP footage from 1965 is far better quality than existing footage from 1966-1969? The 1965 clips of The Shadows, The Birds, Del Shannon etc. looks so good compared with later 60's stuff.

Depends where it has come from.. . for example a 1969 edition is from Lulu's (or BeeGees) domestic home video recorder which of course were still in their infancy. The 1968 edition was Dave Cash's own copy and mysteriously had a missing link at the end. The 1965 stuff was probably all broadcast stuff.
