Simon,I could see West Country Tales being popular, except for the title.I expected something like Thomas Hardy.I checked the clip on Youtube and it turns out it's based on true stories horror!

Thats right. They're more M R James than Thomas Hardy. I've only seen a few episodes and they certainly gave me the willies.
I read that the BBC wiped all but two episodes. Thats been discussed on here more than once. I think they were shot entirely on film, so i was hoping that the b.f.i or another film archive might hold a full set

There's a good bit of discussion here: www.britmovie.co.uk/forums/british-television/86643-west-county-tales.html Well, half a dozen posts over as many years. It seems to have gone from thinking that most or all were wiped,to discovering that very nice copies were circulating,to figuring out that they were derived from the BBC archive. Lostshows seems to reckon that they exist in no-problems format.

More Armchair Theatre, The Man in Room 17, Object Z and The Odd Man would be top of my list.

Does that mean they exist as originals or domestic off-airs ? West Country Tales should all exist in the archives, Simon. My Kal listing says so and I don't think there's a reason to think any were missing. This is a BBC series though and Network (generally speaking anyway) tend to release ITV shows, which was why I limited my suggestions to companies that have a deal with Network (I'd like to be be proved wrong and find that they release more BBC stuff eventually though!).

Still talking about ITV but with reference to the more problematic stuff, all of my own personal priorities for release now would be Rediffusion material. So that would include:
No Hiding Place (22 episodes existing by my reckoning) Half Hour Story (17 episodes) Object Z (complete - plus one episode of the sequel existing) A Man Of Our Times (7 episodes) Devil In The Fog (complete) Blackmail (7 episodes) Seven Deadly Sins / Virtues (4 of each) The Frost Programme (13 editions - only two and a half editions have been released so far) This Week (many exist) Mountbatten (complete) The Lover (standalone single play) At Last The 1948 Show (about 6 or 7 complete shows plus chunks of most of the others, bolstered by audios to fill the gaps) Ready Steady Go (quite a bit of footage although the rights are not held by the owners of other Rediffusion material, obviously; this series would likely be released by a company other than Network) Star Performance (4 existing) Orlando (4 or 5 episodes) Single Plays (various Rediffusion plays exist from across the years from series such as Play Of The Week etc. These could be released as themed sets and would include important examples such as Entertaining Mr.Sloane, The Bonegrinder and The Erpingham Camp).
With the other shows where only a handful survive (e.g. Crane, The Informer, The Rat Catchers, Our Man At St.Marks, Sanctuary etc.), I'd bring these out as samplers. The same goes for other genres such as game shows (Double Your Money and Take Your Pick) and schools / children's programmes. There is actually a fair bit of Rediffusion material out there and it would be good to make it accessible, in order to give an important company fair representation alongside all the other ITV brands!

They were made in 1982/83 so i never fully believed that they had been wiped/junked, but this is the bbc we're talking about, so it wouldn't have surprised me if they had been

Good idea Lawrence,I bet one DVD would cover an ep of many of those lost series? and I am sure big sellers would be themed DVDs like say a collection of Orton,Pinter etc plays and TV plays starring James Mason for example?

Yes, that was my thinking too. There are plays by Pinter, Orton and Potter in the existing Rediffusion material, as well as others. These would all contribute very nicely to a significant DVD set.

I dunno. It sounds very BFI to me.A Noel Coward collection on the other hand...or Wilde. With the release of a single play starring Michael Caine it seems as though Big Names might be the answer,or maybe (much as I hate the term) a reto-themed collection of Kitchen Sink or Swingin' Sixties dramas. Could anything sound more stodgy to the general public than 'Armchair Theatre'?
