Hi,
Just wanted to say I took delivery of the dvd for this episode last friday. Its fantastic. BBC charged £105 for it but to us its priceless. Thanks for pointing me in right direction, I`d been looking for so long I`d almost given up.
Rgds

Hi Gary, Just wanted t let you know that I too was trying to track down the missing OGWT footage of Nutz. I've been a big admirer of your Dads guitar playing ever since the band came to Huddersfield for several gigs back in 73/74. The way Mick controlled his guitar when he came on stage in haze of feedback, was awsome ! He's a true artist, a real pioneer with his own style. When it comes to solos -hes on a different level to virtually any other rock guitarist. I'm sure youre hugely proud. Please pass on my regards and thanks for some of the best gigs I ever saw and of course the records ! If hes still gigging perhaps you could let me know, I'd love to hear that sound again! Steve

Can anyone give any information about appearances by Ian Anderson (interviewed alone, not with Jethro Tull) on the Old Grey Whistle Test?
In particular I'm trying to pin down and interview he gave, probably in September 1978 talking about the forthcoming Madison Square Gardens concert.
Does anyone have detailed show descriptions of the OGWT shows they are happy to share?
Cheers, Don

24.7.73 - PETE SINFIELD, THE DRIFTERS (NOT CLEAR IF THIS IS INSERTS ONLY OR OFF AIR) 24 July 1973 • First broadcast on 1973-07-24 • Recorded on 1973-06-25 • Next in series: 31 July 1973 • Previous in series: 17 July 1973 Description • Johnny RIVERS and his band perform "Sea Cruise" and "It's Alright". • TX'D SONG: "It's Alright" (dur 3m12s/2m48s in) UN-TX'D SONG: "Sea Cruise" (dur 2m36s/0m00s in) 1 • Bob HARRIS intvs Van MORRISON & two of his entourage in the studio. • Van MORRISON: re great to be back in country; re enjoying concerts; re British audiences very receptive; re brought large entourage over; re first went to America to do an album in NY; re recording in US more relaxed; re "Astral Weeks" album done in 3 sessions; re working with same musicians is easier; re time spent working on new album; re concerts; re recording live album at moment; re future plans include movie scoring. • The Drifters perform three of their biggest hits, "Under the Boardwalk", "On Broadway" & "Save the Last Dance For Me", live in the Whistle Test studio. • SONGS: The Drifters - "Under the Boardwalk" (dur 2m37s/6m18s in) The Drifters - "On Broadway" (dur 3m00s/8m55s in) The Drifters - "Save the Last Dance For Me" (dur 2m38s/11m55s in) (NB: All four Drifters are wearing identical green smock tops & slacks with hexagonal patterns & white tassled fringes on sleeves & medallions) 1 • Pete SINFIELD performs two songs in the studio, "The Song of the Sea Goat" & "A House of Hope & Dreams". • Pete SINFIELD - "The Song of the Sea Goat" (dur 5m49s/0m00s in) Pete SINFIELD - "A House of Hope & Dreams" (dur 4m10s/14m29s in) • Film of Sly and the Family Stone in concert performing unidentified song. Please note that the Sly and the Family Stone clip did not appear in this episode. It was replaced by footage of Breadfan by Budgie, which Budgie had filmed independently at a studio in London. Here's the story, from the Budgie book I wrote called 'Back To The Egg': "The appearance of Breadfan on the 24 July 1973 episode of Old Grey Whistle Test was rather fortuitous. Mike Appleton and Colin Strong had planned to include footage of Sly Stone in concert, but decided only a couple of hours before the episode went to air that the audio quality was not up to scratch. Appleton suggested they use the Budgie film, taped a few weeks before, instead. There was a mad scramble to identify the name of the album the track came from and presenter Bob Harris rewrote his script to accommodate the change – all in the nick of time."

Agreed, Alan.. as well as the music there were some cracking interviews, which I always enjoyed watching. This is an extract from a longer interview with Keith Richards, who is not just high, he's stratospheric: The very essence of rock 'n' roll! I also recall an episode where Bob Harris was talking to Andrew Loog Oldham, and at one point Andrew said something like ".. and everything's so f**king groovy.. whoops, sorry about that word, viewers, but Mrs Whitehouse is out of the country at the moment." I wonder if that is still in the archives?

I watched an episode last week where they show some film of Golden Earring doing Radar Love and Bob Harris comments as he introduces it "their not one of my favorite groups" and when the clip finishes he just shakes his head obviously implying he didn't like them fascinating stuff and as you said Kev some cracking and quite rare interviews.

Anyone know the archive status of shows from the first series that featured Ian Whutcomb?
Sadly he could not control his stutter so got the boot from the producer Michael Appleton, who drafted in Richard Williams to help him out.
Ian sadly died last year I think.
I emailled him decades ago when I was trading a lot. He was very interested in a swap then pulled out at the last minute. He said his wife objected to too much junk round the house. A few little dvds. Pah! that's not much.

I don't think many were used on British TV between Kenneth Tynan & the Bill Grundy interview of the Sex Pistols.
