OGWT on 20/12/77 was a repeat of the Ralph McTell edition from 9/11/76 (possibly replacing a cancelled normal edition?). And that does exist... Infax doesn't list any editions from December 74 except Christmas eve (Elton John concert) and New Year's eve - which just means the BBC don't have them (if there were any transmitted on 3, 10, 17 December?).
By and large, Kal is probably less accurate than Infax - which at least since July 1976 is pretty much correct (on the other hand, if anyone spots anything they think is wrong, let me know!). Kal is in the first instance based on Radio Times so may not reflect actual transmissions - though since I help Kal out from time to time, the differences will be getting fewer as time goes on (we hope).

Cheers, Andrew. The 20/12/77 edition is listed by Kal as "Albert Grossman - at home" and non existent, which is what I was wondering about. The '74 dates I referred to listed by Kal as non-existent were 12/11 (Golden Earring, Snafu), 3/12 (Freddie King, Sutherland Bros and Quiver) and 31/12 ((Bad Company, Leo Sayer, Ace). Also listed as non/existent from '74 there are 27/1 (Can, Andy Roberts) and 4/6 (America, Randy Newman). However, it's becoming clearer that the Kal guide is very inaccurate and that the acts listed alongside each edition aren't nessesarily those that appeared. In this respect the Record Collector article is comparitively a better guide. Just a couple of queries, Andrew. Firstly, what is the most recent completely missing OGWT? Secondly, can you possibly provide details of a track listing for the 21/11/72 Sparks session? Thanks.

"Albert Grossman - at Home" was postponed from 20/12/77 and went out on 2/5/78 (and still exists). I think when Kal were doing their original research, the entry for the repeat wouldn't have been logged on Infax, so it might have been assumed that the edition for 20/12/77 was just lost.
12/11/74 exists complete. 3/12/74 does not exist at all, and seems in fact to be the last OGWT for which there are no holdings, since there were no editions on 10 and 17/12/74.
31/12/74 was an extra long edition subtitled "Rock Till Two", which was just over 100 minutes long - the first 85 minute still exist on VT, the last 15 minutes have vanished without trace (unless they were never recorded - I can't say).
27/1/74 doesn't exist, 4/6/74 only has a film insert existing, an interview with Buzzy Linheart.
The only details I have for the Sparks session from 21/11/72 are the transmitted tracks, "No More Mr Nice Guy" and "Girl from Germany". Any other information would possibly be in the programme file for that edition at Written Archives.

I haven't read the posts following this so forgive me if anyone answers your question following; (returning to this thread much later !)
Record Collectors article c. 2000 marks the following editions with an asterix. Their sub note alledges 'these editions have been wiped from the BBC archives'.
Study of the INFAX listings for whistle test immediately not only reveals errors in the broadcast dates by RC; apparently some insert material for quote 'wiped' editions actually exists.
I would guess that the 'wiped' editions actually went out completely live; or as is the case with the 1972 Jim Croce and 73 Rick Wakeman sessions, the original insert tape was re - cut from the masters when it was reused for end of year specials; excess being junked; or once excerpted; the master reel was recycled for economic reasons ?
RC lists
15.2.72 (listed erroneous date as others) MICK GREENWOOD, JIMMY AND VELLA, FACES on film live.
I suspect this re used existing Faces footage from a then recent Disco 2', or bought in footage, so this is wrong for a start.
22.2.72 - HOOKFOOT, RICK NELSON. (No record traced on INFAX).
29.2.72 - SEALS AND CROFT, STRAWBS. (Sure INFAX lists, to the contrary, an insert reel for the Seals and Croft session).
27.6.72 - J. GEILS BAND, NATURAL ACOUSTIC BAND.
3.10.72 - JIM CROCE, STONE THE CROWS. One track from the Croce session; - 2 tracks ?; was used on the 'end of year review' show and thus exists. Bob Harris stated this in the 1980s I recall in the weekly 'retro' feature. Obviously the session tape existed up to then and the theory I outline above may apply.
10.10.72 - HOME
31.10.72 - ELLIS, HARRY CHAPIN.
2.1.73 - DAVID McWILLIAMS, STACKRIDGE.
16.1.73 - JOHN PRINE, RICK WAKEMAN. One of the tracks from Rick Wakemans 'six wives' session 'Katherine Howard' was used in the existing end of year review; same as with Jim Croce probably applies.
27.3.73 - MEDICINE HEAD, BADGER.
10.4.73 - SPIRIT, GALLAGHER AND LYLE. Recall Bob Harris mentioning it to band member during 'Spirit of '81' interview, and him being disappointed.
13.11.73 - ALAN STIVELL, AL STEWART.
21.1.74 - CAN, ANDY ROBERTS. one of the few correct missing performances quoted by Mark Ellen in the 1980s. Of these, there was no record of the requested Principal Edwards, Gryphon, Woody Woodmanseys U - boat or Gentle giant having appeared in session at all. The fan was probably recalling film clips used, as Gentle giant appeared as such in 1974, and INFAX lists that show or item as existing.
4.6.74 - AMERICA, RANDY NEWMAN. I'm sure I found records for America, and in fact the complete show logged on INFAX.
A show from 1974 featuring the second Golden Earring appearence ('kick that guy in the balls' one); and 1975 featuring Freddie King; are listed as 'wiped' also.
It appears there are a number of interview inserts or film material inserts for early editions, not acknowledged by RC. This includes an interview segment for 14.7.72. Richard Williams interviews Chuck Berry, T. Bone Walker and Bo Diddley. These were pre recorded for the evenings impending transmission.
Similarily, from 6.6.72 there is an interview with Sha na na plus two songs. On the same reel is an interview plus songs by winners of an amateur OGWT folk contest.
An error RC; and I think the Kal guide; makes is referring to the insert reels as session tapes. Often in fact the reels contain all pre recorded material including interviews, live film clips and the film finders films as well as the band sessions.

Just to add - the early editions KAL alleged exist as complete off air show recordings; compared to the INFAX notes. I would take the INFAX listing as being the correct one.
7.12.71 - ELTON JOHN, FANNY, (Rollling stones on film, Mamas and papas from 'Monterey pop').
INFAX info seems to match this. As a rider, it appears Mike Appleton pushed to try and get at least one show every year recorded towards the Xmas period. In successive years this appears to be the 'review' show. I suspect the date was approximate in 71 because a request had been logged earlier, and this was the first convenient date for the recording channels to be available ?
8.2.72 - DAVID BOWIE.
KAL alleges the show exists as a complete off air in addition to a session reel. The only record I could find on INFAX was an insert reel containing the Bowie session; 'five years', 'queen bitch' plus first fluffed take; and two takes of 'Oh you pretty things' (which wasn't transmitted). The beginning of the insert tape; with clock and chalk board; is included on the 'best of Bowie' DVD release.
18.4.72 - MANFRED MANNS EARTH BAND, LINDA LEWIS, (Iggy pop and stooges on film, Ornette Coleman interview and number).
INFAX records agree with KAL on this.
30.5.72 - FOCUS, DON McLEAN. This appears to be an error. All I can find is records On INFAX of an insert for the Focus session, comprising of 'Hocus pocus' and 'medley'.
INFAX lists an edition around this date as existing, but not the one quoted. This includes Jerry Lee Lewis and Country Joe McDonald. This is:
25.4.72 - J. LEE LEWIS 3 songs and interview, COUNTRY JOE session, John Prine and Crosby and Nash on film, Mick Jagger interview on 'exile on main st', ELP clip 'pictures at an exhibition'.
11.7.72 - STONES RETROSPECT AND SPECIAL. Featuring film on current tour plus an interview about the Stones career. This is illustrated by clips from 'Ready steady go' and similar period. INFAX confirms this, but lists the date as 25.5.72.
19.9.72 - EVERLY BROS, BILLY JOEL. INFAX info corresponds.
14.11.72 - GLADYS KNIGHT, CROWBAR. Don't think KAL lists this but it appears either to be a complete show or one from which an awful lot of insert material is listed on INFAX. The material includes 'Catherine of Aragon' from Rick Wakemans 'six wives' set to a filmfinders film.
26.12.72 - END OF YEAR REVIEW HIGHLIGHTS. Includes material from both series 1 and 2. Bob Harris listed as actually stating they can't use all the clips they would have liked as some shows or acts were not recorded.
6.3.73 - ARGENT, SHAWN PHILLIPS. Contested by INFAX. All I could find records for were for a Rod Argent interview and the Argent session.
13.3.73 - ROGER DALTREY, JOHN MARTYN. Both sessions exist, but not sure about the show. INFAX says the one with THE WHO from around then exists. I believe the show (latter), includes interviews with Mickie Most and Donovan plus 'Cosmic wheels' set to a filmfinders film.
20.3.73 - HUMBLE PIE. This isn't listed by KAL but the rcords seem to indicate on INFAX this show exists as an off air recording, and the line up is very good.
3.4.73 - ROXY MUSIC, ALAN TAYLOR. Also includes film to 'one of these days' Pink Floyd.
KAL lists this as a complete edition. INFAX only has a record for the Roxy music session as an insert tape, plus the Pink Floyd film is reused on the existing end of year review.
This is taking a long time so I will continue the lists in the near future.
By the way, there is an existing insert tape for another 1972 edition which includes two items, one of these is the T/R promo for ELOs '10538 overture' used on the VHS release 'Rock and roll the greatest years 1972' tape. I suspect the source for the 1973 tape of this for Moody Blues 'I'm just a singer in a rock and roll band' is also whistle test as an item was listed on INFAX.
7.11.72 - STEALERS WHEEL, BRIDGETy ST. JOHN. (INFAX agrees)

There's more info on OGWT over on Mausoleum too, John. With answers to a few of your points regarding missing editions (on the Disco 2 thread, if memory serves me right).

Any idea which OGWT editions were supposedly wiped, John? As I understand it, all that was originally recorded off-air as PasBs (or pre-recorded as inserts) still survives. Possible exceptions to this general rule though could possibly be end of year specials early on, which maybe featured parts of now missing regular shows (although if such material was included in these specials, this would confirm that other early material was also recorded at some point to be available for inclusion but later wiped). I can find no reference to any end of year compilations being transmitted in the Kal guide though. Just to add I forgot to include the query I was answering (as above) on my posting ! Also, Kal lists a few late missing shows (e.g. a few from late '74 and the 20/12/77 edition, which go against the general trend of an almost total survival rate by this time). The Kal and Infax listings need to be pulled together as one and faults ironed out. Can anyone say though if the 21/11/72 Sparks session survives (and which tracks were performed)? That's a personal query of mine that i've been wanting to get to the bottom of for ages!

I'd like to know what survives of the early OGWT too. Particularly things like the Sparks session, which is listed as being in the same show as Bill Withers (which does survive). The Kal listing is vague as it lists the featured acts alongside the edition but it doesn't say which of the acts survive and which don't (in the cases of where a studio session tape exists for the programme). RECORD COLLECTOR (article 2001) lists 21/11/72 - SPARKS, BILL WITHERS. The INFAX entries for this edition state: (BILL WITHERS SESSION - 'use me / ain't no sunshine') (INTERVIEW insert - NEIL SEDAKA) (FILM INSERT Bob Harris introduces WISHBONE ASH performing a live track). The holdings excude any intros or titles and the Sparks session. My conclusion is this material was lve and only the inserts above were pre recorded elements. Study of INFAX listings indicates the team seemed to have a policy of going to an awful lot of effort to preserve something from each show, in fact all the pre recorded inserts. This must have been a production request by Mike Appleton or the department so that in the short run material could be reshown. But Appleton seems to have gone to such lengths to get the show recorded off air anyway, it seeems in keeping they would want to retain what they had. OGWT seems to be a show someone felt worth preserving comprehensively. See my following posts.

This is not a complete listing but lists as much as I can in addition to my previous postings. Can't do it all today again, but here is what I've noted.
16/11/71 - (ALICE COOPER 'under my wheels / is it my body' 15 mins approx session, 2 complete takes each)
(YOKO ONO promo film of Mrs Lennon)
(INTERVIEW - R. WILLIAMS w. DON EVERLY - 8 mins)
(ISAAC HAYES - clip from SHAFT film)
(GORDON GILTRAP 'starting all over / catwalk blues - approx. 8 mins)
4/1/72 - (KINKS 'have a cuppa tea' session tape)
(MIKE RAVEN - INTERVIEW w. MUDDY WATERS)
This listing is going to be in hotch potch dates order as they were out of order listed on INFAX !
1/2/72 - (POCO session - 2 songs, 1 re take) (INTERVIEW - R. WILLIAMS w. STEVIE WONDER)
I'm afraid I'll have to continue this mammoth task next time as I've got to finish for now !

Continuing - these are not chronological order so try to make sense if you can. -
21.9.71 (show 1) RC listing (Mike Appleton voices over intros as R. Williams unavailable.
LESLEY DUNCAN session 'sing children sing'; AMERICA session; NFT rock film festival item, TOM PAXTON interview w. Ian Whitcomb. FILMFINDERS films; ALICE COOPER (hallowed be thy name), ALICE STUART (full time woman).
INFAX (surviving material); AMERICA (rehearsal and takes 'riverside' / 'children'); insert NFT item (Richard Williams from NFT; clips - Rock around the clock; Hendrix 'wild thing' fr. Monterey pop; B. Dylan 'maggies farm'; Clyde MacPhatter 'you'll be there')
The Lesley Duncan clip I saw must have been the second appearence as one here not listed. It's clear I was mistaken thinking the first show could be repeated as less is present than I thought. This and the Paxton interview appear to have been live, and the filmfinders films returned to Philip Jenkinson archive.
28.9.71 - RC listing HEAD HANDS AND FEET, BRIDGET ST JOHN (sessions). NFT festival report pt 2.
INFAX (surviving); HEAD HANDS AND FEET (2 songs 'warming up the band' / 'song for suzie' 2 takes of each); NFT rock festival film pt 2 (R. Williams - clips: Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis 'whole lotta shakin'.
5.10.71 - RC listing; JACK BRUCE BAND, CAT STEVENS sessions.
INFAX (surviving); CAT STEVENS insert ('If I laugh' / 'changes IV').
12.10.71 - RC listing; LINDISFARNE, WISHBONE ASH sessions.
INFAX (surviving); LINDISFARNE ('meet me on the corner' 2 takes / 'fog on the tyne' w. last verse missing), WISHBONE ASH (2 songs)
19.10.71 - RC listing; STONE THE CROWS, LOUDON WAINWRIGHT III sessions.
INFAX (surviving); STONE THE CROWS ('big Jim Slater' 2 takes / 'faces' 1 take plus incomplete take).
26.10.71 - RC listing; DAY OF PHOENIX, BUFFE ST MARIE sessions.
INFAX (existing); DAY OF PHOENIX ('if you ask me' 2 takes / 'chicken skin' 1 take plus incomplete take).
2.11.71 - RC listing; RALPH McTELL, FAMILY sessions.
INFAX (existing); FAMILY ('spanish tide' 2 takes / 'between blue and me')
10.11.71 - RC listing; GORDON GILTRAP, ALICE COOPER sessions. incorrect date ?
INFAX (existing); GORDON GILTRAP ('starting all over' / 'catwalk blues'), ALICE COOPER ('under my wheels' 2 takes + 1 incomplete / 'is it my body' 2 takes); YOKO ONO 'promo of Mrs Lennon'; DON EVERLY interview w. Richard Williams (8 mins); ISSAC HAYES clip from 'Shaft'.
16.11.71 - RC listing; MOTHERS OF INVENTION, JEAN LUC PONTY. 'A special devoted to new Frank Zappa film 200 Motels'.
'Only the Zappa part of the film now survives'.
Infax lists what appears to be tape with film inserts. The word 'inset' presumably means a still slide of the band, or an insert. Thought the band may have played live I find it more likely live clips were bought in as an orchestra played on 200 motels, and Zappas 6 or 7 piece band would be difficult to accommodate. The basic studio was a bare set without scenery inherited from LATE NIGHT LINE UP. Mike Appleton in interview stated it was only big enought to house one presenter and a vase of flowers; hence usually only solo acts appeared on the live evening show. The bands were usually pre recorded on tape in the afternoon at a bigger studio; which is why this happened.
INFAX (surviving); Richard Williams interviews FRANK ZAPPA. (intro R. Williams; (inset - Mothers of Invention) (10 mins 4 secs) (no sound - ex library film ALBERT HALL demos featuring Zappa 8.2.71) (Interview - 10 mins) (closing sequence R. Williams) (inset Mothers of Invention - same as opening) (no sound).
Presumably the film inserts are mute.
28.11.71 - RC listing; REDWING, ALICE STUART sessions.
INFAX (surviving) ALICE STUART ('full time woman' / 'feeling the sound' / 'highway')
DATE (?) - THE MOVE, EMITT RHODES.
INFAX (surviving) THE MOVE ('Ella James' / 'The words of Aaron'); EMITT RHODES 2 songs. Insert LITTLE RICHARD 'LUCILLE' from film Sweet Toronto.
7.12.71 - ELTON JOHN, FANNY sessions. MAMAS AND PAPAS on film. ROLLING STONES on film, 7 min interview w. Elton John and Bernie Taupin.
INFAX (surviving) 'complete off air'.
DATE (?) - RC listing; URIAH HEEP, COLIN BLUNSTONE sessions. Uriah Heep perform 'Look at yourself'.
INFAX (surviving); COLIN BLUNSTONE ('say you don't mind' 2 takes / 'misty roses' 1 + incomplete take)
21.12.71 - RC listing; ALEXIS KORNER, GERRY RAFFERTY sessions.
INFAX (surviving); GERRY RAFFERTY ('can I have my money back' 2 takes).
28.12.71 - RC listing; ROY YOUNG, ANDY ROBERTS, LESLEY DUNCAN sessions.
INFAX (SURVIVING); ROY YOUNG BAND ('rag mamma rag' / wild conutry music'); LESLEY DUNCAN ('chain of love')
4.1.72 - RC listing; KINKS, DAVID ACKLES sessions.
INFAX (SURVIVING); KINKS ('have a cuppa tea'). Omits a second song which definitely survives as a seperate (chalk boarded) take; ('schizophrenia').
More later!

18.1.72 (RC date, may be incorrect may be 16.1.72)) BELL AND ARC, JOHN MARTYN sessions.
INFAX does not appear to list any recordings or material for this edition.
25.1.72 (date ?) (RC list) - CURTIS MAYFIELD , ROCK AND ROLL ALL STARS sesssions.
INFAX (surviving) - CURTIS MAYFIELD (2 songs - the session is bridged with an interview by Richard Williams with Curtis Mayfield); ROCK AND ROLL ALL STARS (3 songs I believe).
1.2.72 (RC list) POCO session.
INFAX (surviving) - POCO session (2 songs - 1 retake - 'railroad days'); Stevie Wonder (interview with Richard Williams).
8.2.72 (RC list) DAVID BOWIE session.
INFAX (surviving) DAVID BOWIE session insert ('queen bitch' / 'five years' - 'queen bitch' false start out take. 'Oh you pretty things' 2 takes. Untransmitted track.)
15.2.72 (RC list) MICK GREENWOOD BAND, JIMMY AND VELLA.
INFAX lists no recordings or material for this edition.
22.2.72 (RC list) RICK NELSON, HOOKFOOT sessions.
INFAX lists no recordings or material for this edition.
29.2.72 (RC list) SEALS AND CROFT, STRAWBS sessions.

7/3/72 - (RC) DAVID ELLIOTT / PLAINSONG sessions.
Afraid I can't find my notes from INFAX for this one so can't confirm what exists.
14/3/72 - (RC) AL STEWART / PAUL BRETT
INFAX - Can't find my notes on this either but am sure this is held as a complete edition off air. The edition also includes THE DOORS on film.
21/3/72 - (RC) JUDEE SILL / AUDIENCE sessions.
INFAX - AUDIENCE 2 takes of 'thunder and lightning'.
28/3/72 - (RC) JOHN DUMMER BAND
INFAX - Can't find notes again ( ! ) but I think the session reel survives.
4/4/72 - (RC) KEVIN AYERS / CLAIRE HAMILL sessions.
INFAX - Again mislaid notes but KEVIN AYERS session reel definitely exists. It includes 2 songs, one of which is 'May I' which is on the BBCs OGWT DVDs.
