WHISTLE TEST ARCHIVE 1976
Please note that the Infax prototype was used partly as a source. RC does not quote any missing editions. This list is based on all the entries I was able to find or note down. For some editions I could not find any entry; these appear to be mainly live editions featuring a single artist. As some of the apparently missing entries have material included in the DVD releases; these should be treated as omitted records rather than items which are not held. Any addenda corrections would be welcomed.

To add, as I don't have notes on any of the period 1976 - 78. Am I correct (if anyone else can remember?); in saying film clips were played of Hawkwind and Robert Calvert c. 76 - 77?
The Hawkwind was something like 'Assault and Battery' or 'down and down' (title?); from 'Hall of the Mountain Grill' L.P.
I seem to think the film clip of Calvert was one of his military uniforms with an army beret?

I wonder if they will use any OGWT footage in that? There was a tiny bit of (silent) footage shown of Bob Calvert in his beret on the CH4 Top 10 Progressive Rock program from 2001, I wonder if that is the same footage as you mentioned above? BTW my first post here... hi all from a long time rock music video collector from the Midlands. Chris.

Anyone ever seen any Ian Whitcomb presentation from the first series??? I never have! No, I haven't either and have often wondered if theres any such material left since Whitcomb though he may not be a household name, is a rather witty and engaging man in his own right being some kind of authority in ragtime music in particular.

Anyone ever seen any Ian Whitcomb presentation from the first series??? I never have! Re - Ian Whitcomb. Ian is credited in 'RECORD COLLECTOR' notes for the first edition as having conducted an interview with TOM PAXTON in this edition. This appears to have been as part of the live broadcast as nothing appears in the INFAX holdings index of that description for the first few editions. There's a pre recorded session tape including America rehearsing for their session; one of Head hands and feet with various takes of transmitted session numbers and a two part feature made on film stock on the NFT Rock film festival, presented by Richard Williams. On the OGWT Vol 1 BBC DVD; Michael Appleton says that Williams was pre booked to appear but his honeymoon coincided with the first two OGWT edition transmission dates. As a result of this, he decided as producer to use the emergency tactic of using slow mix fade ins from the start titles to live studio sessions and long fades between various insert items to allow time to place a live voiced over introduction for each item; steeping in himself to do this. He refers to the same technique being employed for the second edition but Ian Whitcomb doing that one. He said that he and Ian both used generic laid back voices in the style of Richard Williams and hopefully as Ian was seen doing the interviews; viewers would assume the voiceover was Ian or Richard and not notice 'the joins'. Several people 'deputised' for Williams as interviewer during series one. Ian was 'features presenter and occasional interviewer' for series one. Mike Raven also interviewed, and a pre recorded insert example is one for Muddy waters (1972). presumably Ians input was as described only on occasion, and seems to be also according to the INFAX notes have been live; as I don't remember seeing anything existing logged. You can check everything for the first year of 'Whistle test' earlier in this thread as I've copied over everything noted from INFAX for year one. Bear in mind Whistle test material was; where unavailable in the archive; transmitted live; and not wiped. If anything is missing I've documented reasons for this. Just checked this myself - no there are no entries that mention Ian in the existing content for his period. Only occasional interviews exist; where the material it seems was pre recorded; by luck or design the existing interviews do include some all time musical greats such as Muddy Waters and Jerry Lee Lewis amongst others. It should also be noted Ian has been alleged as not being regularly appearing; just intermittently and probably phased out by the end of series one.

ADDENDA (4th July 07). Just adding these updates:
I'd be interested to hear of anyone has any more info of the commercially available OGWT material.
Apart from the officiall BBC volumes; many artists DVD compilations on various independent labels have included OGWT sessions.
These include:
HORSLIPS DVD (2 DVD set): 1974 session including Harris' intro and end titles of show.
WISHBONE ASH - think one of their live gigs includes the 1971 session tracks; plus the 1972 live film track as extras.
CAT STEVENS - the recent gig from 1976 release includes additionally 'Moonshadow' I think from 'IN CONCERT' 1971 and the 1971 OGWT session tracks as extras.
Amendments to my earlier comments on this thread. Apologise where I've mentioned points before.
6.2.73 edition ROY HARPER and CRAZY HORSE. Recent search implies neither this edition nor session tapes exist for it.
27.2.73 - previuos info poss, Record Collector suggests this edition inc. TASSAVALLAN PRESIDENTI and COUNTRY JOE does not exist at least as a complete show.
3.4.73 - ROXY MUSIC Record Collector erroneously says it exists as a complete show. Only session inserts exist.
10.4.73 - SPIRIT' GFALAGHER AND LYLE does not exist.
8.5.73 - Pt 1 ALQUIN and JONATHAN KELLY doesn't exist. Pt 2 is U.S. BLUES LEGENDS for which inserts exist.
15.5.73 - 2 Pt. Pt 1 ROY BUCHANANA, JAN AKKERMAN. Buchanan inserts only exist.
Pt 2 - LEON RUSSELL, B.B. KING live - doesn't exist.
20.11.73 - STEALERS WHEEL, MAN, GREENSLADE, CLIFFORD T. WARD, BEES MAKE HONEY.
Insert film of MAN exists for Pt 1 Steallers Wheel session doesn't exist.
Pt 2 GREENSLADE and CLFFORD T. WARD sessions VT inserts held. Film of BESS MAKE HONEY and interviews with Dave Dee on pub rock exist as film inserts.
