John. Another OGWT compilation dvd is long overdue, there are after all thousands of great performances in the BBC archives. These are some of the dvds that have been released that feature OGWT material and they are all complete sessions, if anyone knows of any others please post them on here.

I know that some of the Jams Performances have been released on the Complete Jam. does that count? also why is it that the OGWT Comps dont contain complete sessions?

John, The Camel dvd is called "Footage" and came out in early 2005. Another dvd I didn't mention is Richard Thompson-Live In Provedence which features a performance from Whistle Test From 1984

The recent James "Fresh as a Daisy" DVD contains an OGWT performance (which surprised me as I didn't even realise their TV appearances went that far back...)

Just to add the following details; if I haven't previously re: 70s OGWT editions. -
Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee - original booking 1973 (as reads on first dates from Record Collectors Radio Times billings); postponed.
Terry and NcGhee were then rebooked for a session prerecorded and broadcast in the edition for 17.7.73.
Focus - Original booking for early 1976 postponed by a few weeks. They eventually appeared with as new line up featuring Philip Catherine as new guitarist - blinding soloist!
The Groundhogs stepped in to fill the gap in the same way the Adverts stepped in when Blood Sweat and Tears were cancelled in 1977.
Henry Gross - A new artist was billed for an appearance on OGWT 1975. Subsequently Gross' tour was cancelled and he was dropped from his record label (reason unknown). PFM stepped in to fill the gap on the 23.5.75. Just as well as far as I recall they were pretty spectacular on the show; also in the 'Choclate Kings' period and played authentically live.

I agree with your last point but think it very much depends on the imagination of the compiler. On the MASTERS OF ROCK 'Focus' release a session out take between HOCUS POCUS and SYLVIA is included despite the mistake; and bar the out take on QUEEN BITCH; and second of OH YOU PRETTY THINGS; I think the 'Best of Bowie' DVD includes most of the session including clapperboard opening. Bearing in mind the nightmare over clearances I doubt at present we will see any complete OGWT early editions released. However I think it would be cost effective; and attractive for someone like the BBC (or someone else) to put out something like THE OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST on DVD; then add say an hour or so of complete sessions at the end as extras. It's obviously no good requesting the unrecorded material. So though I'd very much like to see them; I won't ask for the 1971 sessions by BUFFE ST MARIE; RALPH McTELL or the FRANK ZAPPA music sections for series 1. However, I would like to see a selection of series 1 and 2 complete sessions; such as ZAPPA (interview); THE MOVE; COLIN BLUNSTONE; GORDON GILTRAP; THE KINKS; AUDIENCE and others. I still also would like to see some kind of 'themed' specials; such as a 'folk' special which could feature the unusual (Joni Mitchell; Ralph McTell; Leo Kottke; Stefan Grossman); in addition to the usual (Joan Armatrading and Tim Buckley).

I'm actually surprised this hasn't been done since "Later With Jools Holland" has had successful themed compilations. The 3 official OGWT compilations were interesting but a touch too diverse - many who want the acoustic acts are less likely to want and watch the punk era material and vice versa. For each track I wanted there was at least 3 that I didn't like or want. But... at least we got some material. Whilst theres plenty of scope for such releases sadly the dreaded "clearances" and copyright issues will no doubt make such compilations unlikely

Keep looking for the DVDs 'by individual artists names' as well though. I've often found a WHISTLE TEST session as extras only by studying the play list and extras. (Mentioned earlier by someone too).
That may be the way forward if nothings done again in terms of full OGWT - DVDs.
Has anyone checked out the Joni Mitchell DVDs to see if any of her OGWT stuffs on there ?

Bernardo Lanzetti (the vocalist on Chocolate Kings) didn't join until the Japanese tour that November; this era of PFM would be more around the "Cook" (Live in USA) era, when they were trying really hard to break through in America. PFM's performance does still exist and circulates on bootleg DVD.

Thanks Dave - If I'm correct thinking about it now; the 'CHOCOLATE KINGS' session and L.P. would be about a year later.
The session I mention is closer to the WORLD BECAME THE WORLD period.

Hi,
I dont know if anyone can be of any help. I am trying very hard to get hold of a copy of a perfomance on whistle test from 21/03/75 by a band called nutz which was recorded in manchester. Does anyone know if this performance still exists and if so is there any way I can get a copy?
Cheers Gary

It does still exist, Nutz performed two tracks, "Nature Intended" and "Cool Me Down". Can't help with a copy, I'm afraid.

Wow! Cheers for that, at least I know it exists. Reason for interest is that my dad played guitar in Nutz and only video footage we have of band is a very grainy bootleg of a gig at Bradford Hall from around same time. Many thanks
