Will he give back the trilogic game? In an interview he mentioned threw it out years ago, joking that his bin men must have made a made some money from salvaging it! Lol yes. Was trying to be funny.. The return of the trilogic game. Sometimes i wonder if the return of celestial toymaker could be a hint of return episodes. The original story however was intended as the first regeneration story so they could simply be resurrecting that theme and bringing back a favorite villian also..

Agreed - no need to change anything except an edit on a certain song that we all know about.

The BBC's website, social media, emails etc. don't seem to have had a problem showing pictures of Michael Gough in costume, so I would be very surprised if they changed the character's appearance for the animation. As for the offensive word, I have wondered if there would be any way that Mark Ayres could use his audio wizardry to change it to 'tiddler', which is what I grew up singing (even though I knew what the original word was)?

Granted it would certainly be an odd, illogical and inconsistent decision given that the surviving episode 4 with Michael Gough resplendent in full mandarin garb would be present on the disc anyway! Alas though these are decidedly strange times we live in and therefore all too feasible a minority of ‘fans’, despite being unable to change a costume depicted in a half century+ old show, would still vociferously feign outrage over a new animation that retained it… Regardless, all hypothetical for now. I’m hoping for an animated ‘The Smugglers’ myself. Or better still ‘The Wheel in Space’… - I’m still surprised the latter wasn’t specially commissioned for this anniversary year instead of ‘Menace considering it boasts the more commercially viable Cybermen!

Let them feign outrage. I do not understand why anyone in any circumstance should give into a tiny minority of attention seeking idiots. You do not give in to their demands. If its offensive to these few, then dont buy it...easy. The rest of us with a sense of proportion and common sense will be quite happy to. The costume is not problematic, he isnt pretending to be Chinese and to be honest, any Chinese fans probably wouldnt give a monkeys if he was, its the liberal, do gooding fools that will. Obviously anything offensive or racial should not find a place in any release, just put the This programme represents a time note at the start.

Not quite on topic, but i do find that somehow television seems to be held to a higher degree of accountability than film...no one is constantly wanting to change classic films which have aspects no longer deemed acceptable. Maybe its seen as a "higher" art form than TV and hence is OK. and even if he was pretending to be Chinese, so what?

Link to Twitter post and image of the article is below: linkAhh this would be awesome if its true. Celestial toymaker is the top of my hartnell list for recovery/animation...is it confirmed Neil Patrick Harris is playing the toymaker or just heavily rumoured? I checked out if new who after watching the start of the chibnall era and realising it really wasn't for me and havnt been paying attention since. Not that NPH signifies anything if course but I may be tempted to tune in again now a competent writer, good actor and an interesting returning character is on the cars. Xx

Yes it has been confirmed, it was definitely one of the worst kept secrets going though.
It will be interesting to see if The Celestial Toymaker gets announced next, if so we can probably put the story about The Smugglers (and colourisations) to rest.

Don't beleve everything the Mirror says. After all, Paul Vanezis says that the Mirror is a "clickbait factory for this kind of stuff", so beware!

Obviously anything offensive or racial should not find a place in any release, just put the This programme represents a time note at the start. Again, it’s all hypothetical, unsubstantiated speculation at this point - including any potential backlash that might resultantly arise. Nevertheless such grim portents are far from implausible in the current climate more’s the pity. Maddeningly though and, as you imply, the reason why those of a certain ideological disposition have become so emboldened to throw their toys out of the pram these days is because too many companies feebly capitulate to them. …Elton John once famously opined that sorry was the hardest word to say but I’d argue that it’s actually ‘no’ in this day and age! Still, if the Beeb could get away with a faithful version of ‘Toymaker then they almost certainly wouldn’t with The Crusade. The previously much discussed technical challenges associated with animating that particular story aside it’s the other, more ‘incendiary’ elements that almost certainly make it unviable. Even more so since Season 2’s Blu Ray release.

I've never been a great lover of animations, but those that have remained mostly faithful to the original production (The Tenth Planet, The Moonbase, The Invasion) have done a good job of filling in for the episodes that are missing.
More recent animations with the numerous and frankly unnecessary changes just leave me cold. I find them a woeful visual representation of Doctor Who and the 'creative' decisions to diverge from the original look and feel of the production and even insert references to Nu Who into them to be the height of arrogance. As a result I haven't purchased them.
If they are going to animate The Celestial Toymaker however then I rather hope they commission 'Dinopuff' whose Episode 1 animation is on YouTube, even though it's in colour and widescreen and the sets have been made more expansive. A 4:3 black and white option would be ideal. The likenesses of the characters and their movement is very well done and it is wonderfully atmospheric. The quality is so superior to recent releases it's frankly embarrassing.

I am very well aware and it's part of the reason I want this non-Mirror sourced rumour (even if reported on by the Mirror) to wreck the reputation some people are giving them.

Radio Times is reporting on the Mirror story as well, but I'll take it with a pile of salt until theres an official announcement from the BBC
