The binned U-Matics wouldn't have had missing Doctor Who on them. What we've lost is the chance of Countdown, This Day Tonight, Certain Women, Number 96, and umpteen other mostly missing mid-Seventies Australian shows. And potentially, if he had had a predilection for it, missing BBC comedy. A lot of that stuff was last aired in Australia. Off topic I know, but.....All Gas and Gaiters? The World of Wooster? The Gnomes of Dulwich? Perhaps the idea of recording most or all of Season 6 is stretching the imagination beyond its yield point - please let me be proved wrong.

I thought of that too, because I was told it was still shown years later over there. But most of the umatic tapes have of course been destroyed, so it's not much use projecting about it.

I'm wondering when he bought his reel to reel video recorder, which would give the earliest date something missing could have been recorded, assuming it was shown in Melbourne.

If we have to pay the private collectors who have Doctor who episodes, it should work, but may be expensive.

They don't want money, they want rarity. I would love to say we get them back, it just isn't in the cards at the moment. At least with a collector we know they are safe from further damage.

At least with a collector we know they are safe from further damage. Thats soooo not true - we have seen over & over again that unique materials hoarded by collectors gets junked when they die & their possesions are sorted through - the family see the piles of old films & tapes as so much junk which should go to landfill. Unless the collector has left SPECIFIC instructions in their wills as to their collection then the materials are under threat to this day.

Recently with the Melbourne man we know he was a hoarder of every kind of program/media. Whereas with collectors/fans, the owners of the known missing episodes, will have specific instructions, and take care of their media. As we know WoF3 is with a collector and they are most likely a big fan who knows how to get around and has good contacts. These are the ones I refer to more than the Melbourne man type though I am sure that there's a higher likelihood of the Melbourne man type who will have some missing/lost media.

If they could prove to me they had a legit real missing episode then I would pay 10 grand right now for it

I find this subject rather crass. But for the avoidance of doubt, I personally wouldn't give them a penny. If however the BBC were to offer substantial reward money for genuine, independtly-verified finds, I would be immensely supportive of that. I always thought they had a right bastard asking for stuff to be returned to the archives just so the beeb can horde it or cut it or release it and make a fat stack of cash.
Though saying that, I think, on the whole, I'm on the side of the collectors. Keep it. Enjoy it. But please make copies and have a plan in place for the inevitable end of days that comes to us all, so then we all get to see and experience the item that gave the collector such joy in their life.

Yeah, the Collector doesn't need to reveal their identities. Just let us borrow the prints to make HD scans and D3 copies, and we'll give you back the 16mm print. We did this for David Stead and Bruce Grenville for their DW prints, and they chose to reveal their names publicly. If you want to do this transfer but don't want your name revealed, then ok well accommodate that.

Why would you want to copy it to an obsolete format like D3? It was no secret that David had the Wheel print. He even offered to show it to me months before it was returned if I could find a 16mm projector.

True, but David didn't loan it to the BBC until Gary Russel exposed him on Doctor Who Monthly issue #87. Also that plus the Omnirummor from 2013 that lead to WOF #3 being stolen might be way some collectors might be hesitant to return the prints. They do not want to be doxxed for having missing episodes, which is understandable.

True, but David didn't loan it to the BBC until Gary Russel exposed him on Doctor Who Monthly issue #87. Not true, I'm afraid. David always intended to return the episode and indeed he'd already contacted Steve Bryant at the BBC Archive a few months after he brought it - and that was ages before the letter in DWM. Assuming that it was ever there in the first place.

Ok I probably wouldn’t do 10 grand but I would give a really good offer for the right episodes
