Also... it's only fans who think that if collectors having rare or missing material they will *of course* allow dubs to circulate or hand over what they have. Many of them did. Even recently when new scans were needed for bluray.

Even recently when new scans were needed for bluray. Many don't which was Paul V.'s point. There are plenty of missing rarities - both radio and TV - that are known to exist in private hands but in these cases the collectors won't release a dub of the things to *any one*.

you simply have to hope that they have made sure that family are aware of just what they have, to avoid what has just happened in Melbourne, and other numerous times, when family have assumed its just junk.

Many, I wouldn't go that far. A few, anyway. In this case, five or less. No reason to misjudge the rest as if they're all one and the same. Let's not be unfair to all the people who returned the orphaned episodes that we have today, which are more than five.

I often ponder how much was lost forever because of gatekeeping geeks.
Remember what happened in 1985 when a go-between approached convention organisers about screening Faceless Ones:3 and Evil:2?
I would have to concur with the experts such as Molesworth and Richard Bignell and Paul V. that there are episodes that managed to survive the Great Purge but that were destroyed out of frustration and disheartment in the fact of geeks jumping to conclusions.

If you look up radio free skaro episodes 683 & 789 PV states that he is aware of missing episodes in private collections.
I believe in various podcasts / YouTube videos PV is on record as saying he has verified 2 and PM has said 6. Not clear if that is net 6 or 8 and whether the 6 includes WoF 3.

He states that at least 6 missing DW episodes exist in private hands to his knowledge. My personal interpretation is that he hasn’t verified them all but has been told by people he trusts, e.g. if PV has told him the two he has verified that is good enough for him?

Gven what did happen with FO:3 and Evil:2 in 1985, over-suspicion and reflexive dismissal has certainly cost us forever an episode or two that we could have had.
By the way, vocal synthesis - and like all technology, it will only get better - might help with missing episodes audio where the off air recordings are poor or muffled or have guest appearances by the noise of the room or of foreign TV stations (where the person doing the recording lived near the English coast).

The Phil Morris video is on YouTube 4 April 2020 interview where he says he knows of 6 I've often wondered if he revealed this information, having already acquired these episodes some time ago? Given the sensitive nature of private collectors, confidentiality and all, I don't see how you could reveal online that you know these people have these episodes? Unless they gave him their blessing to do so. I thought it would surely be all hush-hush, until they one day decide to hand them over?

I don't know the details of this story very well... but... sometimes people SAY they have something and then for SOME reason, when pressed they are not in the right location, or don't have the keys to the storage with them, or for SOME STRANGE REASON can't deliver. Even with non-who I've seen this happen.

I'm more cynical given how much we've lost because of children throwing things after the owner's death - like Melbourne Man's U-Matics - and remember how John Cura's vast archive of tele-snaps of all genres was destroyed by Cura's widow because no one wanted them?
