Well this is an odd surprise. A nice one but still a bit odd.
The Smugglers and The Underwater Menace are both strange pics. The Smugglers because outside of the Reign of Terror two parts, this would be the first historical animation.
Underwater Menace is also odd because we were suppose to get that back in 2014 so having it now is unusual. I wonder if it will be all four parts animated or just episodes 1 & 4. My guess, given what they've been doing is all four.
Odd that the Highlanders isn't a part of this because it would then be the only episode of season 4 not animated.
Also mentioned is colorization of black and white episodes. Not sure how to feel about that part

If true, this is a very pleasant surprise. Whatever the choice of stories, we must be thankful for huge mercies!
As for possible recoveries in 2023, we can only take comfort in two quotes:
The Master in The Deadly Assassin: ' The Doctor is never more dangerous than when the odds are against him' and The Second Doctor at the very end of the Tomb of the Cybermen: 'On the other hand, I never like to make predictions'.

Funny I mentioned this in the "A Christmas Wish" thread as mere comment. Nice little surprise even if it's half true. Maybe these 2 stories are to test the market. Fingers crossed.

If I was planning animations my first choice would be āWheelā. Itās a ābig monsterā story with two surviving episodes and you donāt have to have to worry about their facial expressions.

About colourisation:
Gareth Randall rightly points out - as did Steve Roberts some time back - that B&W is no longer viable for the general audience that BBC tv actually aims at.
Only the impotent are pure.

If these rumours are true then āSmugglers is a surprising yet certainly welcome choice for animation as Iāve always enjoyed the story. In fact itās one of my favourites of the āhistoricalsā - even an ailing Hartnell seems to be having fun!
That said, I canāt help but be a little concerned/sceptical over the funding for these rumoured projects. Indeed whilst enjoyable the previous releases remain the bare minimum of what I would consider acceptable for animation, quality-wise. Sadly Furyā and āSnowmen arguably dipped below that bespoke standard at times too.
Now with BBC Americaās cash gone a potentially reduced budget for new projects could only result in further corners being cut and that would, with regret, be a deal breaker for meā¦

Iām very dubious. Thereās a media story claiming two stories - Smugglers and Underwater Menace - are going to be animated, but that story also has a colour piccie of a cartoon Hartnell with a Chumblie and a claim that Galaxy 4 is gonna be animated.
If youāre just gonna animate the MEs, like French Revolution, Invasion, etc then Underwater Menace and Galaxy 4 are good candidates. I canāt understand Smugglers. I think the story has been garbled.

That source has been the one that was proved correct in all the previous leaks, so I am very hopeful and optimistic with this one. The article also appeared in the paper the next day. The picture was the one of Hartnell from G4, but that being the most recent release for him, Iām happy with that and it was just a copy/paste glitch on the website. The Smugglers is a surprise for sure, but makes sense if they are targeting Season 4 as it just leaves The Highlanders as the only serial not existing or animated. Mad to think thatās possible with Season 4 being the worst affected with missing episodes: Season 1: 9 out of 42 missing (2 animated) Season 2: 2 out of 39 missing Season 3: 28 out of 45 missing (3 animated, 1 recreation) Season 4: 33 out of 43 missing (23 animated, with 6 more possibly in the pipeline based on this thread) Season 5: 18 out of 40 missing (14 animated) Season 6: 7 out of 44 missing (2 animated)

Interesting interview with Rob Ritchie on how he got into the animations and the amount of hard work that goes into them whilst still doing their day jobs. Crazy hours being put in: youtu.be/yqXXvjMpWSY

We are very lucky that we have fans as devoted as us who are involved in these productions (animations, collection sets, big finish productions and so on). You can see the effort that goes into them for sure. We donāt agree on everything of course, but hats off to all involved!
