If they are going to do split seasons, I think it really has to be Part 1 followed by Part 2. You couldn't just release "Season 1 Part 2" and not look and feel odd. It has the same effect of filling up a spot in the release schedule, but really you need to have the animations ready for one season to offer up more time for another season.
I mean, the same logic applies to how they're doing it now. Don't you think it doesn't make sense to release Season 24 before Season 7?

Obviously the splits could be shifted but there’s nothing fundamentally wrong there imho.

There's a rather huge difference between releasing seasons out of order and intentionally splitting one in half having never done so before and deciding to drop the back half first

I really don't think there is much difference. It's not like theres a season arc or anything that's getting split. And they hasn't been a precident of splitting seasons before but that because they haven't done a season with 40+ episodes with some missing yet.Even if magically every episode was returned tomorrow I think we would still be having the conversation about splitting them because those sets have so much work to get them done due to there size they will either be skinny on the extras or vastily more expensive which isn't good for fans either way. As for the talk about quad dipping. You can't drag older formats into it. Would you of liked them to draw a line in the sand at the vhs and never bothered updating the releases? One think that I feel hasn't ever been bettered form the vhs days is the painted artwork. I love the blu ray collection cover art but the dvds were woefully lacking as were the later lazy photo montage vhs artworks.

I'm not sure I'd split them that way but I see your point. I more meant season 1 part 1 and part 2 and season 2 part one and part 2 and so on with each season split at about the half way point.like I would still like the collection to represent the whole seasons with animations filling the gaps. The way you just suggested would involve swapping between the two sets back and forth if you were to watch a whole season chronologically unless I misunderstood. The way you suggest may end up with some stories getting missed off if they are not animated. As much as I love the animations(they may not be perfect but in many cases it's the best visuals we will get if you are realistic) we also have to accept there are some stories I just don't think will get animated. All the monster ones will and even with marco polos many costumes and settings problems its notoriety will help it get down probably for an anniversary like the 60th I'm talking about the crusade, myth makers and even the Highlanders. I love all those stories but its known that the dryer historical just don't sell as well or appeal to many people outside us hardcore fans and I'm happy to be corrected if I'm wrong isn't a large chink of the money for the animation coming from bbc America who then televise these animations? They have to appeal to wider than the hardcore. As we know the collection guys and animators aren't in cahoots splitting the seasons up would allow you to get some 60's stuff out there while more animations are produced. Straight off the bat season 1 part 2 would be ready to go as would season 2 part 1...granted season 3 and 4s sets would be a while but you'd vet season 5 part 2 and 6 part 1 with the current animations that have been made. I'd just hate for it to come to it that season 1-6 either cost £100 each and therefore difficult to buy/ preorder so they all get snaffled by scalpers or the stay at £40 and are bare bones releases. Spitting each season down the middle does a lot of good across the board in my opinion. I'd do: Season 1 Part 1 - An Unearthly Child-Marco Polo Season 1 Part 2 - The Keys of Marinus-The Reign of Terror Season 2 Part 1 - Planet of Giants-The Web Planet Season 2 Part 2 - The Crusade-The Time Meddler Season 3 Part 1 - Galaxy 4-The Daleks Master Plan (maybe Massacre here too)
Season 3 Part 2 - The Massacre-The War Machines Season 4 Part 1 - The Smugglers-The Underwater Menace Season 4 Part 2 - The Moonbase-The Evil of the Daleks Season 5 Part 1 - The Tomb of the Cybermen-The Enemy of the World Season 5 Part 2 - The Web of Fear-The Wheel in Space Season 6 Part 1 - The Dominators-The Krotons Season 6 Part 2 - The Seeds of Death-The War Games
Season 6 is the only one in which episodes can align halfway. I've based it around episode counts rather than story counts Yes, think those are fair points Barney, and the split looks logical there Isaac. Shame to split them up, but they are far longer seasons than the average for the colour era of 26 episodes (between 39 and 45 episodes), so I think it makes sense to happen with all the bonus options for the animated serials.

Ok well I think if they released a season one: part 2 first then they would definitely have to re-animate the two missing episodes of Reign of Terror

Ok you are in cloud cuckoo land. They are not going to reanimated 2 episodes of a story that has A. already been animated B.is a historical that is known to not be very popular C. Had dismal sales figures from it's first belief. And that has nothing to do with the quality of the animation it was just a very niche story in a very niche market.
I will acknowledge and agree that the reign of terror is probably my least favourite of the animations in both style and execution but I also am very grateful they did it and it'sfar better than what we had before which was nothing. There are much better historical stories which will have to fight to be animated full stop and your suggesting they remake one that's already been done 🙄

As I’ve pointed out before Seasons One, Two and Six each have only one incomplete story. Considering where we were some forty to forty five years ago to be within touching distance of three complete b&w seasons is close to miraculous.

Moving on to Pertwee, Season Nine is in quite decent condition. As I think I pointed out before the first three episodes of Sea Devils, which were RSC from NTSC, would benefit from a bit more DNR imho but I don’t think there’s anything major required as regards TLC for the picture in that season.
Fast forward to Eleven and it’s Dinosaurs 1. Someone has to fork out for colourisation that can be blended with the colour recovery - the result would probably be pretty good. That would give a complete “run” of the colour series from Eight onwards all in broadcast standard, or something close. Not that many years if anybody had suggested that was possible the response would’ve been to ask what they were smokin’ or call for the men in white coats!
Back to Seven, Silurians and Inferno are pretty good but Ambassadors needs either a lottery win or a lucky find down the back of the sofa.

They'll probably use the new method where they combine the NTSC tapes with the b/w print though, making this season more difficult.

I watched Sea Devils earlier this evening - it’s actually excellent 👍 although I’m not a great fan of the “music” 👎 The first three episodes aren’t that far off imho but I believe there is some scope for improvement.

I could be on a roll here - or it could be the wine 🍷🥂.... but Barney’s suggestion of releasing b&w seasons in two parts caused me to think a little further and look at Season Four. Were Evil to be animated that would facilitate the release of Season Four Part Two 👍

I won't be expecting a Troughton/Hartnell set seens the animations has made incomplete seasons box sets look like potholes to fill and it be very brave say to sneak in The Crusade and walaa Season 2. Then again never know... I suppose the candidates in order would be S6, S2 and maybe S1.

It’s worth thinking about MEs and their impact, if recovered, on completing b&w seasons.
We know that there are MEs out there, and figures of up to about six have been bandied around - although we lesser mortals are not party to detailed information.
It’s almost easier to identify what we don’t know!
1. Someone could claim to have a ME but if it hasn’t been physically verified by an EH - Episode Hunter - it could be a hoax, and there have been a number over the years.
2. Someone could have a ME that has been physically verified by an EH - in that case it’s a question of patient negotiations to return it to the archive.
Of those that have been talked about we have no idea how many are Category 2.
So, let’s consider where any from Category 2 might fit in, starting with the three seasons now missing part of a, or a complete, story.
Marco Polo seems to have gone out of circulation too early so I wouldn’t head to Ladbrokes!
The Crusade is a possibility and it’s interesting to contemplate what recovery of another episode would do to the economics of animation.
Space Pirates cannot be eliminated although I believe Telesnaps are missing making animation more guesswork. I don’t know the standard of the surviving audio.
Moving to Season 5, as this is all monsters I think animations will happen although it’s worth remembering that a number of orphan episodes have been recovered so, for example, another episode of Wheel could be out there.
In Season 4 orphan episodes of Underwater Menace and Evil were recovered. As a Dalek story I expect Evil to be animated but another “real” episode would certainly help. It’s interesting to speculate about another episode of UM which would surely increase the pressure to complete the story with animation.
My personal preference with a partially complete story is that I’m not bothered about animated versions of existing episodes.
Season 3 has a lot missing, although there’s no reason why another episode of Galaxy 4 couldn’t turn up with, again, implications for completing the story with animation.
Everything crossed 👍
