As these are all BBC shows, dare we assume that the BFI will have the honour of revealing ITV recoveries at MBW !

Fantastic news about the recoveries...we have a massive debt to pay Paul Morris for all the sterling work he has done in increasing our understanding of the television archive junkings-how haphazard they were and the culture under which they were destroyed and not just the fate of Dr Who episodes. His endeavour will surely swell the holdings of lost British TV.

Any idea where in Sierra Leone, Paul? Presumably not in the SLBC store which was fragmatised (as you put it)? Welcome back Tim! Thanks matey. Just a flying visit in light of last night's revelations.

Philip Morris just retweeted something from austvarchive which stated the following
"Proud to be currently working on the recovery, restoration & digitisation of the only surviving 1" videotape masters (previously thought lost!) of a popular TV Series from the United Kingdom. What is it? - stay tuned to find out more!"
anyone got a hint as to what it might be?

1 inch suggests between about 1978 and 1994?

1 inch suggests between about 1978 and 1994? IIRC Channel 4 only used 1' in it's early years, so anything even from the past had to be on that format for CH4.

Phil has apparently confirmed on Facebook, no Who in the current batch of returns, which I take to include the yet to be announced items. At least he's clarified to end growing speculation. Done the right thing in that respect.

He did say he was working on recovering the colour Steptoe's currently only available in black & white. Now I know that these episodes were not originally on 1" video but who knows?

I visited Tyne Tees in spring 1981 and they had a room full of 1 inch machines by then, playing out the ads and programmes.
