Which is the Steptoe with a few seconds removed because of references to warming batteries for extended life? Does the clip already exist?
Added: Series 1,episode 2 The Bird.

What did they smell like? What smelt worse the Doctor Who returns or these? Also, any cuts appear in the films apart from those made for commercial brakes? I haven't really got a comment to make about the smell. Each of the Morecambe and Wise films had a few cement splices, probably made by BBC Enterprises to remove FR off-locks. We're talking about a frame or two at the cut point that's missing, but nothing we can't resolve for a future screening. In the Basil Brush episode, the trickiest issue was a tape splice in the middle of the Ritani performance. Nothing appears to be missing. There is a small amount of tramline scratching to the left of frame, nothing serious apart from one scratch that extends for about 35 feet and is right through the emulsion. However, it's during Rodney Bewes reading the story at the end and is fairly static so could be digitally repaired if required. During the transfer, we were able to resolve colour subcarrier chroma dots on both Morecambe and Wise episodes, and this morning I successfully decoded these for a full colour recovery of a short section. With a transfer tailored for colour recovery, I believe that we will be able to achieve very good results for them both. Paul Awesome. With a lot of these recovery’s from Philip, is there any evidence that any of these programs were dubbed? If so was the dubbed tracks found along with them, or would they have been stored separately?

I've edited my earlier post ( about 3 posts above on the thread ) to give an exact quote of PM's words on tonight's One Show, where he seems to clearly state he's recovered better versions of all of those monochrome Steptoes which were previously only available from substandard sources.
And if this is indeed the case I'll especially be looking forward to the upgrade of the one - forget it's title - where they squeeze a full-size pool or snooker table into the premises and proceed to play each other at it; which I thought was the best of all the Steptoe episodes.

All he said is that he's "completed" them. This basically covers 1 episode, the episode in question, 'My Old Man's a Tory' which only existed as a domestic recording. He says "original format" which is technically incorrect as the master tapes no longer exist, we can assume he means telerecordings which are the next best thing. Other than 'My Old Man's a Tory', every other b/w episode existed as a telerecording. In short, we have no reason to believe PM has found any more Steptoe material.

Well, unless more were found ( & indeed maybe they have been & I've somehow missed it ) since the DVD boxset was issued quite a few years back, or my memory is particularly bad I seem to recall that from & including series 2 most of the monochrome ones were in pretty poor condition indeed ( though series 1 is in excellent condition ) - I assumed this was because they were mainly sourced from the poor quality domestic recordings made by one of the writers. You're ( Simon Ashby ) saying only one was. If so, most of those surviving film prints must have been in a bad condition when located.

Can't comment on the condition of the episodes, but I am sure that only the 1 b/w episode existed as a home recording. That said, PM found one telerecording so it's possible he found others in better condition too, but he says nothing to that effect. We'll see!

He has filled the gap in the 60's episodes in terms of quality. All but one of them survived on film as film recordings. The odd one out was 'My Old Man's a Tory'. That has now been recovered thanks to Philip. The other episodes, everything from the 1970's was made on colour videotape. Many of these only survive in black and white. Philip is NOT saying he has found better black and white copies of those. He is saying that he now wants to find some colour Steptoe episodes. I don't blame him. They are VERY funny! Paul

Thanks Simon & Paul. I stand corrected. I was talking about series 2 - 4 (1963 -1965 ) ie made originally in b/w. ( Rather than those colour ones now only in b/w ). I wrongly assumed most of series 2 - 4 were from home recordings because, as mentioned, after series 1 ( 1962 ) the visual quality is mainly a lot worse.
Edited update : To confuse things more I mentioned the great snooker episode; which I've just looked up ie "Pot Black". It is actually one of the colour ones presently only available in b/w - which is probably why I wrongly assumed it was one of the earlier actual b/w ones.
It's a while since I last watched them all. Which makes me now wonder if I've confused the visual quality drop, which I recall as including most of series 2-4 ( made in monochrome ), with the poor quality of most of series 5 & 6 ( originally in colour ). Although I do seem to remember on watching the DVDs thinking how the comedic/dramatic content improved from series 2 onwards, while the picture quality at the same time got a lot worse.
Anyway I'm probably only muddling things up further, so I'll say no more & please accept my apologies for any confusion I may have created.

Are either of the recovered M&W the same episode as the "goo" one? At Starburst in Aug 2016 Phil said "I'm quite confident that we'll find another copy of that episode to be honest."

No. Episode 7 has some water/moisture damage near the head, but this affects only the first 40 seconds or so of the first sketch and is extremely minor. It would disappear completely with a full restoration. Paul

Any idea where in Sierra Leone, Paul? Presumably not in the SLBC store which was fragmatised (as you put it)?
