Very near impossible to vote on this one as my vote will differ depending on what day of the week it is. A great season with some of my favourite stories. I voted web, but Tomb is also great as is Abominable and Fury. Ice warriors, enemy and wheel are also great fun. A classic season.
So very hard to chose. So many great choices. This is my favorite season, hands down. Had to go with WOF since it's the first appearance of The Brig and an beautifully directed masterpiece, but then the rest of them were too. Close seconds go to Tomb & Snowmen for me.
For me, there can only be one contender, even if this was a single poll across all seasons of DW ... and that is Tomb. My interest in DW mainly results from nostalgia, a fascination with how much I can remember from such a young age. Even though Tomb is the second-oldest Troughton of which I have any memory (I was 5-and-a-half at the time), it is also the Troughton story of which I have the most extensive memories. Obviously created a lasting impression on me! If all DW stories had been destroyed immediately after broadcast and I could now wish one back into existence, it would have been Tomb.
2nd place = Web; 3rd place = Abominable - two of my all-time favourites.
Season 5 had Cybermen, Yeti, Ice Warriors and the Seaweed creature, what more could you want? I've been partial to stories set in the current day with on location filming eg. The Web Of Fear, The Invasion and Spearhead From Space. So, The Web Of Fear is my choice.
Season 5 is a terrific season, and it occurs to me that if any of these stories were in any other season, they'd almost certainly be front runners for best of that season. It's just an embarrassment of riches, really...
Mission Impossible! Sorry wrong series... I've gone for Web because it has a brilliant storyline (always love the links back to previous adventures and Travers delivers on this big-time), it has a Quatermass feel to it, wonderfully atmospheric, great set, Troughton at his best, the action kicks off right from the start and yes, it has a big nostalgia factor for me and was thought lost forevermore. But all of the others are classics too especially Tomb, Fury and Abominable Snowmen... It's like being asked to pick only one of the Seven Dwarfs to save from a pit closure - how could you do it? I thought it was interesting that Season 5 has the flatist viewing figures I think of any season - all of the stories close to the 7-8 million viewers whereas other seasons had peaks and troughs. Us Public knew what we were getting!
For me it was a very tough choice between The Abominable Snowmen and Fury from the Deep, but I ended up choosing The Abominable Snowmen (based on Episode 2 and recons). I love the exotic setting and Padmasambhava is creepy as hell. The Yeti were a good disguise for the intelligence in Tibet, but in London it makes no logical sense at all. The Web of Fear, even before its recovery, always seemed a bit gimmicky to me, but The Abominable Snowmen is a great piece of television with a great setting, great actors and a great, believable story. I would love to see more of it one day.
