Ade thats one question that needs to be addressed straight away. Perhaps he mistakenly believes they are videos when they are just audios after all. On a few of the tapes he comments about fuzzy lines, snow and good definition. Why put that on an audio box? Surely the BBC could settle that point once and for all. Chris the BBC already have copies of the later Cliff shows from 1974 & 75 mentioned on tapes 6, 22,31. Its anything from the 1970-71-72 seasons we are after. In this collection there are 5 listed shows from the 72 season. Tape 28 looks like BBCs '50 Years of Music' to me, broadcast 6th November 1972. This survives at the BBC.

Chris i understand your point and good luck next Sunday night when the auction ends. However its guaranteed if you make a maximum bid of £400 it will fail. This is going to reach thousands. The guy does sound sincere and seems frightened of breaking ebay rules saying that he cant end the auction because several have already bid. Is that strictly true? I thought the seller could withdraw at any time. Even if it does violate ebay rules... what in actuality would they do about it? They have billions of listings- they must get this situation every day and accept it as a loss. Also re. bereavements and archive material falling into unknown hands, didnt the same situation happen about 6-7 years ago with a large Rediffussion archive owned by Brian Sams (not completely sure if that was his name so apologies to the guy if he is still alive). I heard that a lot of the archive founds its way into the hands of record dealers etc out to make a quick buck. I know of one 16mm telerecording from 68 that found its way to a dealer on the south coast which he consequently sold on.

Chris best of luck with this. This is not a personal dig at you but it does sound rather incompetant and unenterprising that a 'known' collection like this could be allowed to languish for 8 years without any kind of deal being forged. Now youll have to pay over the odds -plus theres no guarantee itll end up in the right hands.

Ive been hunting unsuccessfully for so long to find any remains of Cliff Richard's 1972 BBC series. There are 5 shows listed here (he made 13 that year) and all are officially missing so obviously i am keen to bid. The contents of the shows are all present and correct for the dates he gives which lends me to believe this lot is genuine. However it is essential this collection gets back to either Chris Perry or the BBC and not in the hands of a millionaire collector like Dave Clarke as we will never ever see these again in our lifetime. The only way of clinching the deal in my honest opinion is to put in an outrageous final bid. Something many will no doubt do so it would have to be truly outrageous.
Wouldnt it be beneficial if a bbc official could pay avisit to this guy yielding a big carrot? He could in effect double his money by allowing the BBC a copy for a fee and then selling the originals on as planned. They would have to act fast though. This once in a lifetime window of opportunity will be closed in a week.
Once the material is back with the BBC there are ways and means to get copies if readers have any doubts.

'All I Have To Do Is Dream' is taken from the last show of Cliff's 6 part 1974 series for the BBC broadcast 28th September that year. All six 45minute colour shows survive - the only of Cliff's series to do so. Olivia also duets with Cliff on 'Proud Mary' on that show and gives a solo performance of 'I Honestly Love You'. Andy it does seem curious that none of the 1970, 1971 and 1972 series (39 shows in total) didnt sell abroad - but it certainly unfortunately looks that way. Other established artistes like Lulu, Cilla Val Doonican and Rolf Harris also had tenure of the Saturday evening tea-time slot in the early seventies - and very few of their BBC series survive also. I'm led to believe the sticky issue of performance clearance fees became such a legal and financial minefield for the BBC that the costs of repeating any of them became prohibitive. In fact from memory, very few, if any of these music-variety shows were ever repeated again. With that situation you can see why the BBC were only too quick to wipe the Quad tapes on which they were recorded.

Rock 'n' Roll Medley & Twelfth of Never - from BBCTV's surviving '50 Years of Music' broadcast 6th November 1972. This 75 minute special co stars Lulu, Henry Hall, Vera Lynn, New Seekers and Gilbert O'Sullivan. In addition to the above tracks Cliff also sang Living Doll.
Marvin Welch & Farrar - from 'Getaway With Cliff' from BBCTV's surviving August Bank Holiday show broadcast 30th August 1971. MW&F performed 'Lady of the Morning'. Filmed on location in south of France Cliff performed (among others) 'Fire and Rain', 'In The Country' and 'Oh Happy Day'. The oft seen clip of Cliff & Olivia singing 'When Im Sixty Four' is taken from this show.
Re. Day I Met Marie - the 1968 performance in cravat actually is taken from a Dutch-German tv appearance 'Waauw' on 21st March 1969. Perhaps someone could clarify the country in which this series was made. Cliff also sang 'Dont Forget To Catch Me' and 'Good Times Better Times' in the same show but these remain unreleased. The Day I Met Marie 1970 performance you refer to could be from one of two surviving shows.. Cliff in Skansen (Sweden) - a live outdoor concert recorded for tv, or 'Cliff in Scandinavia' - a joint Scandinavian/BBC production which were both made during August 1970. The latter show aired here in Britain on 1st October 1970. The 1975 film performance is taken from 'Cliff in Copenhagen' - a Dutch tv special in which Cliff sang 11 of his hits against the backdrop of Copenhagen's landmarks. It aired on 26th April that year. Hope that helps Paul

I was expecting to see a cover of the Carpenters 'Close To You', but this is a different number altogether. Its taken from a surviving 1972 BBC musical-comedy thriller entitled 'The Case' co-starring Tim Brooke Taylor and Olivia Newton-John. Cliff did cover the original Carpenters track on the 9th January 1971 edition of 'It's Cliff Richard' As i stated above nothing survives from this series at all.

Hi John, still not found that 'Close To You' clip unfortunately. The reason for my interest is that Cliff & Olivia performed it during the 1972 'BBC It's Cliff Richard' series - all of which is missing.
Cliff produced three Saturday night series for the BBC during 1970,1971 and 1972. Each series ran for 13 shows and aired between January and March those years. All 39 shows -bar one -remain missing from BBC's archives. That surviving show from the very first season is from 31st January 1970 (show 5) and features the Shadows as his main guest. There is a clip of 'Move It'' on youtube taken from this show. Nothing at all survives from the 71 and 72 series sadly. As far as i can establish the series did not travel abroad either so the likelihood of any shows surviving looks miniscule. I do have clear audio recordings of all the shows which is some consolation i suppose.
Re. the other points in your post....
<recently information has been profiled on THE MAUSOLEUM CLUB about an existing segment from a Missing edition dated April 1970.> That was my post John. I have transferred to dvd from video a lost 8 minute colour segment of show 12 (of 13) in the 1970 series broadcast on 21st March 1970. It features the opening song 'On The Beach' and a lively rock 'n'roll medley to close the show. Quality is fair to good. Looks to me like it was originally taken from quad tape -with some fall out evident.
<Theres also a posting clearly from the BBC VT library which features Marvin Welch and Farrar; and is listed as being an ITS CLIFF special dating from August 1971.> There are two one-off surviving August Bank Holiday BBC Cliff Specials from 1970 and 1971. 'Getaway With Cliff' (1971) includes Marvin Welch and Farrar performing 'Lady of the Morning'. The 1970 August Bank Holiday Show was originally made in colour but survives only as a b/w telerecording. His special guest was Aretha Franklyn and probably the main reason it was retained.
Cliff made a final belated 6-part series for the BBC (with same title) in August-Sept 1974. This is the only series which survives at the BBC and i believe someone has uploaded all of it in segments on youtube recently. Paul
