Hi Lance, as something of a Cliff/Shads afficianado ive been collecting what few pictures from this series remain and the stage setting (with the string 'hosepipe' lighting arrangement) is identical to this clip. You might think that sounds tenuous but with the aid of my magnifying glass it does all match up. I have some nice direct line audio recordings from the series and its my intention to combine the pix and audio once im au fait with my digital video editing software. The' Song For Europe' was featured during each of Cliff's 13 week series for the BBC in 1970 (Mary Hopkin), 1971 (Clodagh Rodgers) and 1972 (New Seekers). The artist would perform the contending songs over 6 weeks - returning in the 7th week to sing all six songs together in a 'Song For Europe' special - at the end of the show Cliff would give out the postal voting details and the winner would be announced and performed the following week. The same format was employed for the Cilla and Lulu Shows when they took tenure in their particular years. The series also had some impressive guest stars - including Elton John and Olivia Newton John who made about 4 appearances. Her popularity led to her joining the regular cast of Una Stubbs and Hank Marvin when the series returned for the 1972 series (Jan-March) - all of which are believed wiped .
My other thought is that this clip alone was requested by an overseas tv company - in a similar fashion various individual clips from TOTP were used in the German 'DISCO' show for example. If that is the case it does not bode well for the survival of the rest of this show or series.

All 13 shows in this series are missing - i had presumed the quad tapes were wiped not long after their one and only broadcast in the UK. However this clip of Clodagh Rodgers 'Jack in the Box' in the 'Song For Europe' is definately taken from one of Cliff's 1971 shows. www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZThaXSEC6E&NR=1This clip is b/w whereas the series was made in colour. Is it possible that a few quad tapes of these shows escaped wiping and are now in private hands? Or is this more likely to be from a 16mm telerecording? My research suggests that the series did not air in any other country.

Could be he has cohorts in the wings trying to pump up the price. He need have no fear. These will rocket in closing minutes. Kevin lots of pressure on tomorrow with emotions going haywire. Bottom line is these tapes are probably genuine (2 tapes lent to BBC in 2000 proved genuine although not broadcast quality.) I would still like KAL to pay a few thousand for these. I have clear direct line audios of all the missing 'Its Cliff Richard' shows in this auction, so if the sound is below parr on the tapes im only to keen to offer mine in return. That sorted it really comes down to picture quality. I think its well worth the gamble myself. Good luck guys for tomorrow night. Be bold.

Hi Kevin, i would rather they did go back to the BBC than in the hands of a private collector where they would disappear into obscurity. As Chris pointed out at the start of this thread there would be ways and means to ensure we do get to see this material after restoration.

I think our seller is wobbling a bit under the pressure. Alarmingly at midnight he put the following message up- "Just to let you know that i will be ending this auction soon because representatives of the BBC are giving me stress because i refused to end the auction and sell them this listing cheaply.Thank you all for your support and take care."
Then just 45 minutes later he posted this: "Please ignore my last statement.I am going to ponder over this issue but for now all is normal and going ahead ,thank you"
Cant someone from Kal quickly intervene here. Im sure you could get him to remove the listing because of threats of litigation and clinch a deal at the same time.

I made this very point 4 days ago roualt. There doesnt seem to be any initiative to do anything along these lines. The window of opportunity closes in 4 days and the likelihood is that we will never ever see or hear about these gems again. Unfortunately this is listed as a private auction - so we will never know the identity of the winning bidder either.

thanks Lance, we can only but offer.
Chris if you are successful i hope Kal will allow me access to the Cliff Richard material I have been so keenly searching for all these years. In exchange I have some other lost material to give to you, including about 15 minutes of colour footage from another lost BBC Cliff show - this time from the 1970 season (21st March 1970). Perhaps if others like myself pledge you some missing clips instead of money - that would surely be more managable in practice.

Laurence theres a buzz and excitement here not seen in a long time which you can no doubt detect. Can you assure us that there is a master plan going on here behind the scenes to win this auction which for strategic reasons you cannot reveal here? The rest of us are doing our part by agreeing not to bid, but i get the feeling that Kal are looking at a ceiling of £500-600 and anything above we can forget about it. Are there things going on that we, the great unwashed, dont know about? Some insight or reassurance would be appreciated.

Id pay by Paypal too... any others willing to lend support paying by Paypal? Shame youre declining our offers as that extra pot of money will be more strength to your elbow in the closing seconds. Not being rude but if your sticking to a £500 maximum bid we wont even be in the running. I understand your circumspect attitude but i really dont want to see this one escape and disappear forever.

The five 'It's Cliff Richard' shows interest me - nothing at all survives from this 1972 series. It appears that the owner may have recorded just edited highlights. Olivia Newton John appeared in 4 of these shows -although her name does not appear in the cover descriptions. Elton John was another guest - and it mentions that just an extract from his performance was recorded here.

Chris/Laurence just to keep you updated that this lot is generating some avid interest among Cliff fans - especially continental Europe (Holland, Denmark) where the following is especially loyal. One Dutch girl fan recently paid over £8000 for about 10 45rpm unreleased acetates on ebay and she has an uncanny knack of winning over all competition in the final seconds. Shes amasses anything to do with Cliff and price seems to be no limit. You can forget about bidding in just hundreds here, honest.
I dont know how deep (or shallow) Kal's coffers are but i quite like Gary's suggestion that we all pull together if the price gets astronomical. I personally would add £200 if the price exceeds an agreed amount and if a minimum of a dozen others on here pledged the same it might give you more power to your elbow to win. Any thoughts on this?

What about the BBC saying the tapes were unusable 8 years ago? Can one of Chris Perry's team chase this up with the BBC to ascertain whether there's any truth to this claim.

When all is said and done i really hope Chris Perry pulls a master stroke at the closing seconds of the auction. It really is important we get this. Ive never seen so much missing material in one auction before. Quick question. Would these tapes be colour - or just b/w? Most of the original shows would have been in colour.
