Well, that is the question, isn't it! Is recordable disc a suitable format for preserving anything? The evidence up to now seems to suggest that there is no such thing as archival quality DVDs and it's a lottery whatever brand / type you choose. The point i'm making is that we don't have a choice of formats any more. It's basically place your trust in discs or nothing. Before, we had various tape formats and some were better than others. Mention of audio cassette was deliberate though as it seems tape as a medium (audio or video) is more reliable long-term but we aren't being given a choice of medium to record on any more. There should be a higher quality consumer equivalent of the old formats alongside disc - but there isn't, so expect a lot of people (whether it's collectors like us, camcorder buffs that record weddings etc. or whoever) to have large unplayable disc collections in the future! With Audio cassettes, I always found the more expensive ones like Scotch, Phillips etc, that were always dearer in the 70s havent aged as well. All my radio stuffs in mp3 now, but whilst transferring material from cassette to mp3, I found the best tapes were the old "COMPACT CASSETTES". Remember those. Even the c120 tapes very rarely caused me any major problems whilst transferring. Eric. I generally found that where i used branded Vhs tapes - the best being Maxell and Panasonic they have stayed in good quality playback. Suprisingly one of the best picture qualities even re-playing today is a Granada 3 hour tape from 1980 and it is a very heavy tape ! i don't know if this is a factor in its quality. Regarding audio tapes i always tried to use metal and chromium tapes (Maxell and Ampex) which again still play well today. As for dvd's after speaking to a few people and trying various brands over approximately 6 years, the best most reliable discs that i've found are Verbatim archive grade and the Taiyo Yuden -R(Verbatim, Maxel and TDK) which seem to have a very low failure rate with a good quality dye, claiming up to 100 year archive life. I must confess i keep as many of the original tapes as i can and i probably will for at least ten years till i can test the early discs for any sign of degredation.

There was an excellent documentary on BBCFour about this series a few years back, from what I gather not much actually does survive. Suprisingly quite a lot survives, consdering how P.C. the Beeb are(and have been for a while) Kaleidoscope says 77 out of 96 survive though i'm not sure that the figure of 96 shows is correct as the show had an 18 year lifespan and that would mean only 5/6 show per year, but still a fare few still in existance

Just found this clip on "you tube" of the pops from 68 playing Young girl - Gary Pucket as number one with what looks like Davy Jones on the link with Jimmy Saville and long playout only (with timecode)added today (6th June 09) Havent seen any clips from this edition before. Is this a new discovery as i know there is very little from the 60's officially in existance ?

Mystery Hall sounds as if it could be it as it definitely featured a large house/mansion and some of my most vivid memories are from TV of the late 60s (7-10 which is the best age for the sense of wonder - Fall Out was a blast! - although I actually remember the JFK assassination and the first episode of a certain long running serial that was delayed by ten minutes as a result....) Presumably it no longer exists? Alas as in so many 60's childrens tv www.lostshows.com/default.aspx?programme=d5a4ca82-d27c-436e-a8c3-dab3a75532e6all gone - unless someone knows otherwise

BFI & Carlton notwithstanding - does anyone know of any prints or any existing material of this series? Not the colour "This is Tom Jones" from 1969/71 as I know they're all out on DVD courtesy of Mr Jones himself as he bought them ages ago. This was a black & white series of 30 min progs.
"The "This is Tom Jones" series is not all out as there is a lot of it missing or b/w trs There's 2 three disc sets, a Christmas special and just released a bit of a mash-up "Whats new pussycat" but still glad they are out The earlier series looks interesting though

Whilst many people morn the loss of this show, there are many such shows as "The newcomers 1966 - 69" which suffered even greater losses (5 left out of 430), without any chance of viewing episodes since transmission in the 60s

Hear, hear gives you a chance to see the faces behind the hits as most of the satalite music channels show endless jumbled up videos thrown together under a generic title e.g R & B hits The shows return must be iminent

Don't know if many people have spotted this channel Simply Movies(Sky 341) But they have shown and are showing some rare and seldom seen mainly British movies from the 50s though to the seventies. On Saturday(28th) there's a movie called "Just for fun" which hung round a typical teen story of the time are performances by Bobby Vee, The Crickets, Freddie Cannon, Johnny Tillotson and Joe Brown and the bruvvers, Karl Denver, Jet Harris & Tony Meehan, the Tremeloes, The Tornadoes (feat Heinz)Dusty Springfield and Cloda Rodgers Quite a list and Alan Freeman and Jimmy Saville. Quite a cast and must be quite rare.
Also this week is a very rare 3 hour musical called Pepe from 1960 with Amongst others Bobby Darin, Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra. Worth taking a look as there are a few gems on this channel
