Following the two Christmas specials that's three new editions in as many months - not bad for an axed show. Proves the format still works and tonight's show looked and felt as fresh as ever. Testing the water perhaps for a regular weeky return to BBC 1 where it belongs? We can hope ..

Hear, hear gives you a chance to see the faces behind the hits as most of the satalite music channels show endless jumbled up videos thrown together under a generic title e.g R & B hits The shows return must be iminent

Bit tongue in cheek but at least articles like this keep Top Of The Pops return in peoples mind. Saw the comic relief special the other night and thought how fresh it seemed. The main thing was that it show cased current songs in a unique way instead of just another showing of the video, nice to see the cast of Gavin and Stacey on stage and David Tennant at one point...takes me back to when John Peel guested with Rod Stewart and The Faces. In my opinion not having made any Top Of The Pops shows in the last 3 years is as criminal as wiping the tapes of the 60's and 70's as so many unique performances have been missed. BRING IT BACK ............PLEASE!

I was (as Scott know's!) at Television Centre on Friday night for this Comic Relief TOTP special.
The atmosphere was absolutely fantastic - one of the best atmosphere's I've known at TOTP (during my 48 editions over 21 years!!) - it was sooo relaxed - for the first time ever we were allowed to take mobile piccys (this is usually frowned upon and most definately not allowed!) - I took loads in the studio. I met David Tennant along with Jonathan Ross, Dawn French etc...
I'd had a few drinks before hand as well (so that helps!!) but it really was a great show to be a part of - I loved evey moment of being there!
Don't know if a weekly show will come back any time that soon, but I think I got the general impression from chatting to one of the production team I know on the night, that more 'specials' are probably on their way...
Viewing figures for this (well, unofficial overnights at the time of writing this) were 6.7 million (this figure is likely to increase once the final figures are known). Whilst this figure will be a little bit 'artifically' inflated simply due to Comic Relief, it still goes to prove that there is plenty of life still left in Top of the Pops, and done properly, like last Friday, it can still be a real tv gem....
Let's hope there's some more specials on the way shortly.... I think there just might be......

Then there was this one of course in Oct:- news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7695145.stmI wonder sometimes if these things are put out to gauge public reaction, to sow a seed in people's minds so to speak, then if it's favourable who knows ... that's what the optimist in me thinks anyway!

I know what you are saying, because I thought that too - in fact I was convinced the Christmas "no it won't be back/now it will" scenario was a tester to see what reaction would be..... However, I have had it pretty much confirmed to me that the weekly show is a long way off ever returning, but, more specials are on the cards ... Personally, I think if the number of specials each year are increased, to say maybe 4 or 5 (per year) then this perhaps generates a greater interest in the show and keeps the appreciation and interest alive, rather than risk a weekly show de-generating again .... not that I would be against a weekly show - far, far from it - but in *some* respects I can kind of see the way the BBC might be playing it...

I would love to see the show return in it's original format (weekly), but current music scene doesn't have the 'turnover' it used to have, especially chart wise. Perhaps the beeb should consider a monthly show for the time being?.

It's only a personel opinion but it's not only a case of bringing back totp but the the music of today just doesn't do anything for alot of people and the singers arn't anywhere near as interesting and what with that who knows or even cares what the number 1 single is i just can't see it working as i say just a personel opinion but i do know many others feel the same.

This is true but if TOTP came back, it wouldn't be aimed at people of our age. Teenagers and families with young would be the intended audience, who might think differently about the music on offer. That's how it was when it started and any version of the show that was reinstated would have to roughly follow that blueprint (otherwise it would be an OGWT / Jools Holland type programme).

I guess your right laurence i'm looking at it from someone who is 51 years of age and when i was a teenager i thought it was brilliant nearly all my friends watched it . I suppose it has to be aimed at todays youngsters regardless of the music but the music scene has changed so much especially over the last 10 to 20 years with downloading and various music channels although not one as far as i know caters for 60s and seventies music footage only maybe vh1 .i'm still not sure that todays generation would watch it enough to make it worthwhile.

Well, one interesting thing I have noticed...... Since the weekly TOTP was cancelled (end of July 06) there has been 5 "specials" - Xmas 2006, Xmas 2007, Xmas 2008/New Years 2008 and Comic Relief recently..... Now, I attended all these shows and noted that the general audience seemed "much older" - there were quite a few people in their 50's for example I got chatting to who attended the Christmas Show's last year for example.... Myself, well, I am 39. Been doing TOTP since 1988, 48 editions so far. On most of the weekly editions, my mate (who is the same age as me) and I always used to joke that we were getting too old for TOTP as the audience then seemed very "teeny bopperish" !!!! But - as I say - with the specials since the last weekly show, this seems to have changed a good fair bit - alot more "older" people were there and I didn't feel "out of place"! at all ..... That's not to say you are right about the show (if it were weekly again) being aimed solely at the younger audience, because, I feel too, that it would be .... Maybe, as I say, specials are the way to go for the time being simply because they seem to be doing the job in attracting good audience figures (well, certainly in comparison with the final few years of the weekly show) and keeping the interest in TOTP quite healthy.....
