Well the review discs are out now and its a recon, its unlikely they'd change it after they've sent all the discs out for various magazines/websites to review it.
Knew it was a recon. But such a shame ! How can you recon Reign and not Web ? Bizarre !
I presume you mean how could they animate it rather than recon it.
The simple answer is, they didn't. It was somebody else who worked on those releases with animations, they've brought in a different group for these two releases and they have different attitudes and different interests than what the old DVD team had. So no commentaries, no extras, no animation. Just subtitles and a trailer for the other story.

Yes, But they clearly had no intention of doing it ! Surely they must know how its being done ! They clearly for whatever reason did not want it !

I'm sure they knew animations were being produced by Pup, but they're not going to approach Pup and say "We know you've been producing the animations for the DW DVDs, but we're handling these partiticular release so we don't need you thanks. But if you can hand over all your contacts for the animation so we can source them ourselves we'd be grateful". Do WW have someone with experience in handling such a project? I genuinely don't know. I'd be surprised if WW didn't consider producing an animated ep 3, but as Scott says it'll have come down to a business decision. I'm more disappointed about the lack of extras than animation, but I'm very relieved that the episodes have at least been cleaned up and VidFire'd.

On the one hand I'm absolutely delighted to soon have my grubby mits on my favourite Who serial. On the other, I would like to say otherwise but I am very disappointed that the tele-snap recon of episode 3 has made it on to the DVD. This is in no way critical of PV's sterling work and to be honest, the tele-snap recon was fine for a quick release on iTunes, but I think the DVD release should have had episode 3 animated, after all it is what we have come to expect with recent releases and it fits the previous criteria of less than 2 episodes missing. I know that the release was handled by another part of the BBC, but they will have been aware of what went before, after all they asked PV to work on the restoration, thank goodness. Personally I would have been happy to wait longer for release and pay more to get the animation. This is a perfectly valid opinion to hold and is no way critical of anyone other than those handling the DVD release. I also find it interesting, although it would have made no difference to my decision to pre-order, that there was no definitive information about the status of episode 3 on the DVD made available to the buying punters until this close to the release date.

I feel speed is of the essence here to maximise sales on the back of the success of Enemy of the World. Anyone agree?

More than one company out there. Either they believe ep 3 is out there, or dont want to spend anymore on animations ! I would of waited till it was done properly

Yes the DVD will be better quality than itunes, but, many people bought it on itunes and will think it of sufficiently enough quality to not bother forking out money for a DVD that contains nothing more than their itunes release.
They could have released both WOF/EOTW on DVD at the same time since there are no extras or animation involved on either.
I agree Shelly, people would have wiated longer and paid for, a DVD with animation.

That's of absolutely no concern to them, their job is to release these two stories on DVD, they aren't concerned with any of the other releases.

Absolutely ! But the powers at be have had the time to do it proud, but all we are getting is a bog standard if better quality DVD

Having watched the iTunes release on Apple TV, the DVD will be hard pressed to be any better. Watching it that way, the quality was superb. Be nice to have a physical copy though.

Well, the DVD'll have a higher bit rate at a better resolution, and will be Vidfired, so it's probably going to look better than the itunes files.

And oddly, Web 3 would have been one of the simpler and more accurate animations. They have plenty of reference material from the surrounding episodes and there's a lot of action in dark tunnels.

Weirdly the iTunes broadcasts looked loads better on Apple TV than on a computer. Must be optimised for quality when using that platform in some way. Being up scaled by the the box to 1080p helps. Perhaps I need to get an upscaling DVD for best results.
