So, FIVE HOURS AND FORTY MINUTES, not including the monochrome clips or the surviving series three material; leaving a full 3 hours unreleased. That is, sports fans, the same again as the amount of material that has been released (3x 25 min compilations and, later, the 100 minute video). I was not aware of anything other than the 'Comedy Greats' video which I thought was essentially the same as the 'Best of' DVD. What are these 3 x 25 min compilations? I would also like a proper NOBA release - with restored versions of the LPs as extras. Perhaps there will be other audio material worth releasing now too.

Sorry - 6x 25 min compilations. These were made as a repeat series in 1990.
The bulk of these shows were then compiled into the "Best of What's Left of" and later "Comedy Greats" video. Sketches left out of the video include "The Ravens" (pilot), "Fairy Cobbler" (XMas Special), "In the Life of My Uncle Arly" (1.3), "Fight of the Century" (2.1) and "Pete and Dud in Heaven" (2.7), as well as several musical breaks, studio "Goodbyeeeee"s and opening sequences.

They were actually 6 x 30 minutes for UK transmission, but they were made in the period when the BBC was editing 30' shows back to 25' for overseas sale.
From memory, most shows lost a music break; I do recall that Bargo had several substantial cuts made to it to shorten the episode.
The last episode, however, was more radically edited, removing John Lennon's poetry and North Circular Road, and replacing them with The Walrus And The Carpenter and Initials which had not been in the UK run.

What happened with the Beatles "I'm A Loser" song being on the soundtrack of the 'North Circular" sketch? It was on the original "Best of.."NOBA VHS, but I gather it was changed for the re-releases, but unsure how, unless the original audio elements were available separately? Anyway, I'm still buzzing about these audio recoveries, I hope we don't have to wait too long to hear some/all of this stuff. I'm still waiting to see lots of the extant video material of NOBA though, so I'm not holding my breath if the BBC's track-record is anything to go by!

Though I'm unaware of the soundtrack being amended for re-releases, this hardly surprises me that the Beatles track would have been removed.
That will be down to Apple Corps either refusing to give the rights or demanding far too much money for the track to be used. If this stuff ever comes out on DVD (I am an optimist!) then that and the John Lennon appearances will very likely be edited out for similar reasons...in the case of Lennons' appearances, Yoko Ono would have the final say since she owns his "likeness" and so on as The Beatles Anthology had to credit.
To tell the truth, I think this state of affairs is absolutely pathetic. These shows were made 40 years ago and its ridiculous to think that all this time after, theres all this legal red tape to go through. Its not as if anyone seeing it are going to "steal" the song and put it up for download since its a brief section.
Not Only But Also is one of the cornerstones of British Comedy TV. I think its criminal we can get complete sets of many dire comedies that don't even come close, but of NOBA, we get fobbed off with a 15 year old compilation. A complete DVD set MUST be released at some point with all existing materials, audio and visual.
I wonder whether it would be worth campaigning and lobbying against the BBC for this?

"I wonder whether it would be worth campaigning and lobbying against the BBC for this?"
Probably been mentioned, but weren't the usual clips of "enjoying that sandwich", etc, as seen in a recent 1000 Best Sandwich Moments-type shows (on C's 4 or 5), in a much better-looking state than we are used to? May've been mistaken, but I was quite taken aback - could've been the one on over Xmas/New Year - Best Sketches or something... Fingers crosed anyway.

With regards to this Andrew, I would be very interested to know whether the Not Only But PSYCHO footage exists?

Yes it does, but it appears there is no soundtrack.

I downloaded one of the 1990 compilations which featured the "Psycho" clip in colour, so where did the soundtrack come from?

No idea - what does the soundtrack consist of, ie is there dialogue? If it's just music that wouldn't be hard to recreate...

I downloaded one of the 1990 compilations which featured the "Psycho" clip in colour, so where did the soundtrack come from? It can't be one of the "The Best of What's Left of NOBA" shows - that clip wasn't used. What else is in the show?

The show begins with the Tower Bridge clip. When the "Not Only But Also" banner is unfurled, "The Best Of Whats Left Of.." is superimposed on top.
It goes straight into the shower sequence. Dud is seen looking into a mirror singing "Old Man River" in negro fashion. He strips off and goes into the shower... as the black make up comes off, his voice starts to transform into his own and by the end, its Duds own voice. It appears to be in synch and unusually for a color film clip, there is audience laughter on the soundtrack.
This then goes into "The Making Of A Movie"m, followed by a Dudley Moore trio piece in black and white. Following that is a sketch (b+w) with Cook as a cobbler goblin making fairy boots and Dud as Melanie. Then comes the 2Alan A Dale" skit and finally "Goodbye" from the same show since Pete and Dud are still wearing their Alan A Dale costumes.
The title of the file is 1-05. I downloaded 1-06 and this was the final one of the series which featured John Lennon and the Beethoven routines, so I assmume this show featuring the "Psycho" routine was the 5th of the "Best Of.." series. Hope this helps.

Ah. That isn't the Psycho sequence, which was an opening to one of the 3rd series shows. The one on that compilation is the 'Ol' Man River' sketch, originally in series 2, though the version on that compilation wasn't originally from NOBA at all but was made for the 'Behind the Fridge' stage show.

Thanks for that Geoff... I get easily confused! I didn't know they were lifting stuff that wasn't from NOBA!

Thanks for that Geoff... I get easily confused! I didn't know they were lifting stuff that wasn't from NOBA! I think that is the only example of non-NOBA stuff used in those compilations, but happy to clear that misunderstanding up..except that I would like to see the Psycho skit, so I'm also sad it isn't available!
