Yes - in regard to Laurences query I had thought BEST OF NOT ONLY BUT ALSO was actually edited over onto colour VT from film? If the tape was then wiped it would explain why it only existed as a B+W T/R and the insert films still existed separate in various cans. Just a thought. There is a "Best Of" existing which is all colour film (along with a reel or two of colour film inserts, as confirmed here by Andrew Martin). However, i've seen a few clips from studio sketches which look very much like the 1970 series as their hair is longer) on b/w t/r. Back in the '80s, I got a listing of NOBA holdings from the BBC, which included a 1974 "Best Of" on b/w/ t/r (although i've not seen any confirmation from anywhere since that such an edition exists!). So maybe there are two compilations and that the BBC holdings need to be checked again in detail.

Could those b&w sketches be from the Australian shows, Laurence?

I don't think so because the Aus shows are on b/w VT, aren't they? I've seen clips of them. This one was a t/r. Also, as the BBC sent me a listing of their holdings which included a 1974 "best of" on t/r, i'm assuming it's snippets of that which i'm thinking of. It seems either to have disappeared since though or never existed and the recording is of something else. It's a bit of a puzzle, this one.

There is a complete episode of Not Only But Also available for viewing on the BBC Motion Gallery website. It is the episode from Series 1 originally broadcast on 20 March 1965 and also stars Peter Sellers.
It includes a couple of items that I had not seen before, including "The Gourmets" sketch with Cook, Moore and Sellers!

I was advised on another thread with a similar query to Laurence's that the b/w studio footage from early 70s' sketches ARE from the Cook and Moore Australian series of 1971 in lieu of their 'Behind the Fridge' tour there and not from 'Not Only...' 1970.

The big giveaway with the 1970 and 1971 footage is the length of Pete and Dud's hair. In the 1970 film inserts, look at their hair on the Tower Bridge footage. Then look at that b+w VT footage - it's much longer being from over a year later - Dud's hair is much wilder, longer and stragglier in the 1971 footage than it was in 1970 and Pete has bushier or longer sideburns. AFAIK NOBA series 3 was hastily done - inserts filmed in Winter 1969/1970 - so utterly impossible for their hair to grow so long so suddenly by the time those shows were broadcast in early 1970!
Are we any nearer to ever having any DVD release of what exists of NOBA? It's criminal we still can't buy or see all of those. They're very worthy candidates for Doctor Who type restoration too, with Vidfire and much of those colour film inserts look shockingly bad with dirt, so deserve a full clean up.

There is always the issue of the Lennon material, and the amount of money Yoko Ono would ask for it to be included. Some of the musical guests may pose a problem as well. However, some sort of set using just the Cook/Moore stuff is long overdue. The 'Comedy Greats' DVD contains only a releatively small fraction of said material.

To say nothing of the fact that Series 3 was done in colour. or that there are multiple Episode Guides that show that the originals were done in 65/66 by the BBC, and are not part of the Colour Series 3.

By the way, does anyone have a clue what "The epic that never was" sketch from 2.5 was about? For a second I thought it might have been a take on that I, Claudius documentary, but it would have been at least a year too early. But now my curiosity is piqued how NOBA cover the subject of the epic.
