Is it because it is so badly damaged that it is taking ages to repair (found nearly 18 months ago so how long does it take?).Or is it because there is no suitable release available to slot in a single episode (perhaps they are animating the 2 missing ones then issuing all 4 parts on DVD?) Or is it because they are going to release it combined with a newly discovered story from the same era? (ie all those rumours re POTD being recovered. What do others think?

I think it wouldn't be out of place as a Special Feature on an Ice Warriors DVD mysefl. But after the Galaxy 4/Aztecs debacle, who really knows?

I believe the truth may lay somewhere in the middle.
It probably does need a bit of restoration, AND they are waiting for the right release. I have a hunch, and it really is nothing more than that, we might see The Ice Warriors have the two missing episodes animated and UM 2 put on that.
In regard to POTD, that would be the best anniversary gift EVER but I don't think it's true. If anything I think we may be told that it's going to be animated. Bar spotting Lesterson in an animators showreel we have nothing to base this on..

I didn't think UM2 was that badly damaged, or at least didn't require as much restoration work that airlock did.
However, I imagine that it would need some money spent on it. Therefore considering that the Ice Warriors would need a considerable amount of money spent on animating parts 2 and 3 I don't think the budget could stretch to include restoration of UM2 as well as other special feartures.
Also I'm not if the boxset rumoured of Underwater Menance and The Moonbase with the missing episodes animated would be feasiable due the to the cost.
I have no idea how they are going to release UM2, it would be nice to get some kind of update. The BBC are almost as tight lipped as Games Workshop when it comes to releasing stuff.

That depends on the release price I should think. Two animated episodes AND a newly discovered one? I'd pay extra for that!

Maybe they could, er, broadcast it on the BBC ? That way it would be automatically distributed to millions of homes at once ! Seriously, why not ? I doubt the restoration cost more than making 30 minutes of brand-new TV does, and BBC3 / 4 seem to have a lot of space in their schedules.

Have a gander at the Thetamation showreel from the group that are animating The Reign of Terror - you can see some animation for another Missing episode planet55studios.com.au/Maybe UM2 will be on that DVD release.

How do you get to the showreel..? There is a player just under the first paragraph. People have speculated that the scenes showing Hartnell in the snow are from TP4 - even though such a scene doesn't exist - they could be test shots to show 2|E what they can do (ala the cyberman Invasion clip) or possibly it's nothing more than one animators own work he wished to use on his show reel. as well as recreating animated adventures for the first ever time-travelling Doctor, for the BBC’s massive blockbuster franchise Doctor Who. Some people are reading 'plural' into this quote as well.

There is a player just under the first paragraph. Ah, thanks, my crappy work PC running Internet Explorer doesn't want me to see that, for some reason..!

Well that's interesting, there's also what looks like a very scary Jon pertwee in a frilly shirt throwing youths over his shoulder as he often did. And who's the man who seems to be in some sort of base hand to his face with the tardis in his eye? He has a look of lesterson to me. You can almost pick out the doctor who stuff from the rest of the clips because it has its own look similar to the Invasion episode one. Something about the way the eyes move. And slightly more real world than the other bits.

Isn't Marco Polo the only "snow" the first doctor encounters out of the missing material?
