Australia - which received every episode from the series except the asimov stories and an episode called 'To Many Cooks' due to copyright issues. While it's true that the Azimov stories were not widely available, NZ did get Sucker Bait and Dead Past - both aired in mid-1967. We didn't get Too Many Cooks.

Sold to fewer countries (two of which later suffered hideously destructive civil wars.) Off the top of my head, of the B&W Doctor Who eps we got 6 lost episodes from Nigeria, 4 from Hong Kong, 3 from Cyprus, 1 from Australia, 1 from New Zealand, and the rest (I think) were in the UK.

Keep in mind, we had Ian Levine there in the late 70s saving a bunch of returned prints from destruction.
I think there were 5 from Hong Kong. the four tomb episodes and Web of Fear 1

I am visiting Bill on Saturday afternoon. I'll give an update on the outcome as soon as I can. From my phone conversations with him, I am doubtful that he has any DWs. He's already gone through and examined most of the cans and reels - many of which aren't labelled - but from what I gather they are all colour films, no b/w. Hi all Back from seeing Bill. As suspected, no DW. All cans - and there were lots! - were opened and examined. All the films (in cans or loose) were held up to a light as much as needed to establish titles. Mostly documentary in nature or feature film. There was only one TV episode, and was Bonanza. Sadly neither Bill nor his mother knew where the films came from, so there's no way of tracing or tacking possible origins, or even contacting other collectors that Bill's dad may have been in touch with over the years. As for the two DWs that Bill remembers seeing, no sign. But it was by no means a wasted trip, as it is always interesting to see what is "out there" in NZ. Jon

Well we weren't expecting too much.
What's interesting is that when old 16mm film copies of Doctor Who go for over £1000, people really do start thinking about what they might have, such as this case. Maybe others are doing the same and there might be more luck there.
Thanks Jon for checking it out.

That's a shame, Jon, but not wholly unexpected.

out of the unknown was sold to: The 32 episodes that New Zealand screened were sent to Finland in October 1968 and February 1970, Hungary in February 1969, Sweden (March 1970), Sierra Leone (December 1971) and Yugoslavia in June 1973. I'm just wondering if these sorts of places have been checked for OOTU. I can guess they've been approached regarding Dr.Who but - going back to what I was saying before - i'm particularly keen to know if Sweden (with it's apparent excellent archiving) still has anything like this lying around. As it's a key archive series, it's always worth checking.

Thank you Jon for taking the time to check this out, and thank you too, Bill, for coming on here with the invitation to look through your Dad's collection.
Very much appreciated.

Jon I think i speak for everyone in appreciating the effort you put in down in NZ and please pass on our thanks to Bill for taking the time to get in touch. just as a side note on the films bill has, and you'll be able to judge better from what you've seen, but it might be worth compiling a list and submitting it to the NZ film archive (or i'm sure the bfi would help) to see if any of them are considered 'lost'. i was surprised at at how many relatively contemporary film were misplaced as shown on this bfi link. www.bfi.org.uk/nationalarchive/news/mostwanted/75-list.html

Jon A shame, but thanks for the quick update. One thing really puzzled me about the whole story, though - Bill appears to remember The Aztecs, but unless I'm misunderstanding the listings on BroaDWcast, I thought that serial was never broadcast in NZ? In which case, it's more than a little intriguing that Bill's dad somehow got hold of it...

Giles, "The Crusade" wasn't broadcast in NZ either, but the prints were sent through NZ, and "The Lion" episode turned up here, so it isn't an impossible claim.

Jon,
Did his mother also remember there being Dr. Who reels?

I wanted to thank Jon for taking the time going through Bill's films. I hope the meeting was beneficial to both in that he knows now what he has.
I also think we as a group owe Bill thanks for allowing Jon to visit and enjoy the hunt of looking through this collection.
I think those who doubted bill kind of owe him an apology as he has been completely open and up front with us. I welcome bill as a friend to the group and let him know he does have friends here. You have many here who are knowledgeable about film. If we can ever do anything for you. please let us know.
